Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero. Kirk himself called Garth the model for all future Starfleet Officers. Garth charted more planets than any other Captain and was the hero of the Battle of Ax- anar, the story of which is required reading at the academy. This is that story. “Axanar” tells the story of Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart. Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time. It is the year 2245, four years into the war with the Klingons. Axanar will be the first non-CBS/Paramount produced Star Trek to look and feel like a true Star Trek movie. The story of Garth of Izar, a character only seen in one episode of the original Star Trek, is one writer/producer Alec Peters first wrote 20 years ago. It was- n’t until 3 years ago, after playing Garth in the well known Star Trek: Phase II fan film, did Alec turn the story into a screenplay. But making a fan film was not of interest to Alec. A veteran entrepreneur and a 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year winner, Alec decided that if he was going to make Axanar, it needed to look like a real film. So Alec re- cruited his good friend Christian Gossett. A visual artist whose ground break- ing graphic novel “The Red Star” includes James Cameron and Ridley Scott among his fans. His first short film has won several awards on the film festi- val circuit and his second film looks like it has Oscar potential in the short film category. Axanar has already begun to attract attention from Star Trek fans who want to see something new and innovative that honors the Star Trek they grew up on. If hundreds of thousands of fans are willing to see fan films that recreate TOS (The Original Series), then there is a huge appetite for something new and original and professionally made. Axanar will start shooting in May 2014 and be released Winter 2014. • Parties in Star Trek Fan Litigation Don't Boldly Go Into the Unknown
INCONTESTABLE® BLOG Parties in Star Trek Fan Litigation Don’t Boldly Go Into the Unknown; Sele Claims February 27, 2017 By Jonathan Uffelman Edited by Naresh Kilaru; Julia Anne Matheson The Central District of California recently denied both parties’ motions for summary judgment in a copyright infringement case involving a fan Star Trek film, setting the dispute up for a jury trial. However, the Court’s findings that defendant Axanar Productions, Inc.’s film was objectively similar to Plaintiffs’ copyrighted Star Trek works, and that Defendants had no valid fair use defense, was sufficient to lead the parties to settlement. Since 1966, Plaintiffs have produced six Star Trek television series totaling more than 700 episodes, and thirteen Star Trek motion pictures. Additionally, Plaintiffs have licensed numerous derivative works, including books, games, merchandise, and audio-visual works. These works incorporate stories taking place in time periods both before and after the original television series. Collectively, these works constitute the Star Trek canon, used by many Trekkers to create fan fiction. As avid Star Trek fans, Defendants intended to make a fan film about a character called Garth of Izar, who appeared in one episode of the original television series. In that episode, Garth is a former starship captain, famous among Starfleet officers for his exploits in the Battle of Axanar with the Klingons twenty-one years earlier. The Defendants’ film was to depict Garth’s exploits. Defendants sought to make “a professional production” with a professional crew, “many of whom have worked on Star Trek itself.” Defendants raised money and produced a twenty-one minute film called “Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar” (“Prelude”) and released it on YouTube to raise funds for a full-length feature film.

FALL 2020 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome, Greetings, Salutations and yI'el! Welcome to the Fall 2020 issue of the Ticonderoga newsletter. This issue finds the intrepid crew of the Ticonderoga once again boldly moving where only the foolish dare...among Dragons! Not only that, but we are going to explore our adventures among those whom we love to meet, who frequently bring dragons to life...the actors, authors, and artists that we've met and gotten their autographs!! This has been an unusual year with the world health issues having made it difficult to get out and enjoy conventions, films, or most any of the large gatherings that we all love so much. So this edition is going to help us live with our memories and share the times that we have had in the past meeting our celebrity crushes, while we look forward to the times in the near future where we will build new memories. “Lockhart'll sign anything if it stands still long enough!” — J.K. Rowling , Chamber of Secrets Some autographs are rather easy to obtain because the “autographee” seems to be at every event ever planned, while others fall under the “holy grail” category due to the rarity of encounters. For those who collect them, the reward is worth the chase in either case. So enjoy these stories of chasing dragons and autographs, stay safe and we'll all meet up on the other side! “Star Trek' says that it has not all happened, it has not all been discovered, that tomorrow can be as challenging and adventurous as any time man has ever lived.” —Gene Roddenberry As always..

  • INDIE FILM FESTIVALS Are Starting to Add a NEW Category: FAN FILMS!
12/7/2017 Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest – Fan Film Factor Tag: Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest INDIE FILM FESTIVALS are starting to add a NEW category: FAN FILMS! While studios like Paramount, CBS, Warner Brothers, Disney, Fox, and others try to gure out what to do about fan lms, Independent Film Festivals already have a solution: CREATE SPECIAL CATEGORIES FOR THEM! Up until recently, if you were a Star Trek fan lm, your options were pretty limited when it came to entering your production into a lm festival or contest. For the last few years, the annual Treklanta convention has held the Independent Star Trek Film Awards (now called the “Bjos”). Obviously, entries are limited to only Star Trek fan lms. And then there are the independent lm festivals that allow entrants from all genres and production backgrounds. There’s a lot of these. In fact, Prelude to Axanar won awards in 19 dierent lm festivals, including the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, Creative Arts Film Festival, Widescreen Film & Music Video Festival, Nevada Film Festival, IndieFEST Film Awards, and California International Shorts Festival. Star Trek Continues has also taken in its fair share of awards at the Accolade Global Film Competition, The Burbank International Film Awards, and most recently https://fanfilmfactor.com/tag/berlin-sci-fi-filmfest/ 1/2 12/7/2017 Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest – Fan Film Factor was given awards in ve categories of the International Independent Film Awards. And while some award shows, like the Geekie Awards, limit the range of entrees to specic genres like sci-, fantasy, horror, etc., Trek fan lms are still competing with “real” independent lms with professional production teams and budgets that are often into the six or even seven gures.
