Present Chantry Farm E. of church, with notable Tudor woodwork,is a post- Reformationparsonagehouse. At the Hall, John Bensusan-Buttestablishedthe probability that the rear range was the remnant of the large, quadrangular house of SirJohn Denston,founder of the chantry; that the present main house was built c. 1690for Sir John Robinson (d. temp.Anne), the chief remains being the barley-twist staircase, the black-and-red brickworkand the small-paned windowsat rear; and that alterations, mainly in the front of the house, were perhaps paid for by SirJohn GriffinGriffinat the time of the Robinson-Clivemarriage, 1782. I am pleased to tell you that the Better Broadband for Suffolk program has Sreached a new milestone, 93% of homes and businesses across Suffolk can now upgrade to a Superfast Broadband service. This is fantastic news and means an overwhelming majority of residents, businesses and organisations can now enjoy the benefits of faster and more reliable internet speeds. But as a resident and a councillor of a rural ward where some premises still do not enjoy these benefits, I know we have further to go. We already have a contract in place for Openreach to extend fibre broadband coverage to 98% of all Suffolk premises by 2020. But even beyond this, we are committed to reaching 100% Superfast Broadband coverage in Suffolk as quickly as possible. So, if you haven’t already done so, check if Superfast Broadband is available where you live by following the simple steps below, but don’t forget, even if broadband is available, you will need to upgrade your connection to enjoy the benefits of the higher speeds. Some Ancient Suffolk Parochial Libraries J. A. Fitch
SOME ANCIENT SUFFOLK PAROCHIAL LIBRARIES By THE REVD. J. A. FITCH, M.A. The purpose of this article is to give an account of such ancient 'parochial' libraries as have survived in this county, together with those which have been lost, dispersed, sold or destroyed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the steps which have been, are being, and will be, or ought to be taken in order to ensure the preservation of the surviving libraries for posterity. The method in the first part will be chronological, taking the libraries in the order of their foundation, so far as this is known, and I shall en- deavour to relate the Suffolk story to developments in the country as a whole, apart from which it is scarcely intelligible. There has, in the last few years' both nationally and locally, been a revival of interest in these old libraries, of which Suffolk has, or had, a good representative share. This interest was stimulated a few years ago by the notoriety attending the sale and dispersal by their local trustees of certain valuable libraries (notably that of Shipdham, Norfolk) and the wholesale and wanton destruction and loss of others. This resulted in the appointment in 1949 of a Com- mittee of the Central Council for the Care of Churches to enquire into the matter, make a survey of existing libraries and a record of those lost, sold or destroyed, and finally, to make recommendations for their better conservation in future. So much valuable informa- tion came to light in the course of this enquiry, that it was decided to publish a detailed Report under the direction of Mr. -

May 2018 BURY ST EDMUNDS RESPOND INSPECTOR MATT DEE Police in Bury St Edmunds are currently investigating a series of Exposure offences that have taken place in the area of Moreton Hall. Offences have occurred on the 29th March, 22nd April, 3rd May and 6th May in the late afternoon. The offender is sometimes using a black and white bike and is described as either mixed race or tanned skinned male, aged late 20's to early 30's and short dark brown hair. Any witnesses or anyone with information are urged to come forward. PCSO Pooley attended a Fraud awareness day at Barclays bank, offering advice on keeping your bank account and personal finances safe.
