Sibrydion 7 Ocean plastic on our beaches From a 7 year old's perspective

Hello, my name is Freya, I’m 7 years old. I am visiting Granny and Paul. I went with Paul and picked up some rubbish from Aberdovey beach, near to the donkeys. I found blue things which were cotton bud sticks, lots of green string which Paul told me were bits of fishing net. I also found lots of other plastic bits. I don’t know what they are. My teachers told me that fish and birds eat these plastic bits, then we eat the fish. This can make us poorly. The birds can die. Their babies can die too. Freya and her little brother, Jack. We stood still and counted the bits we could see. There were 28 just there. There were too many small bits to pick up. Paul told me the small bits were big pieces once upon a time, and if we pick up these big pieces, this is easy. Pony Trekking, Camping, Some nice people came up to us and Holiday Cottages said thank you, they gave us rubbish Excellent sandy beach for families they had picked up. I would rather collect plastic rubbish than go crabbing. It’s a better thing to do. When I’m older I want to come here and see birds and know there are still fishes in the sea. If you read this, please don’t walk past rubbish, please pick it up and put it in the bins. Stop it going in the sea. • Pony Trekking/Riding lessons, 4yrs upwards • Holiday Cottages • Camping with Estuary views • /cycle path This is my world. www.bwlchgwynfarm.co.uk [email protected] Freya x 01341 250107

Ah well… in her eyes.

48 Sibrydion The point of this little anecdote is to stress that in the world of nature not everything is as it may seem and it is always worth taking a closer loo ….and nowhere is this more pertinent than in the fascinating world of insects. If you sit in your garden on a warm, sunny afternoon it can be quite relaxing and therapeutic to watch and listen to the bees buzzing around the flowers and shrubs collecting pollen and carrying out their vital pollination work. However if you take a closer look you will find that although a lot of the ‘bees’ certainly look like bees with their regulation black and yellow striped uniform there are subtle differences --they are in fact non- stinging hoverflies. So why do harmless hoverflies Located at the gateway to Snowdonia, disguise themselves as bees? Thirsty Work By Lisa Cunningham-Allsop – Camlan Garden Centre, Dinas Mawddwy.

June The risk of nighttime frosts should be over. We were unlucky in May with some very cold and frosty nights causing damage to plants that had taken advantage of the warm April to put on some early growth. There’s always a lesson to be learned about protecting delicate plants at night in May, I know we were caught out at the garden centre so it can happen to anyone! Summer bedding plants will be hardy enough to be planted outdoors in baskets and pots, make sure you water regularly if there isn’t much rain or they are in sheltered positions, it can be surprising how thirsty annual plants can be. We have water retention granules in the garden centre shop which can help reduce the risk of pots and baskets drying out, and you’ll use less metred water if you are connected to the mains supply. One of the most common questions we are asked is why plants in pots have died, it is almost always because they were too dry. If there is a dry spell, do water shrubs, trees or July This is peak growing time for annual flowers, hedging that have been planted during Spring. Vegetable plants can be top dressed with well- rotted manure (we sell it in handy 50 litre bags) and chicken pellets to provide a source of nutrients as they continue to grow. There are still plenty of vegetables to plant in July, such as lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and radish. 52 Sibrydion Watering should now be done early in the morning or after shade has fallen in the evening, and a mulch of wood chip or Dalefoot wool and bracken compost can help reduce evaporation. The added bonus is that it will help keep weeds to a minimum!
