East Sussex directory of Supporting People services All information correct at time of going to press May 2010 Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy Statement We are committed to equality and diversity, as both a Service of services and as an employer. Our practices and procedures aim to reflect the varied needs, expectations and culture of all members of our community. We make every effort to ensure that no member of the community receives less favourable treatment when accessing our services on the grounds of: • gender • gender identity • disability • race • religion or belief • age, or • sexual orientation. 2 Partnership Logos 3 What is Supporting People? The Supporting People programme pays for housing-related support services that help people to live independently. Housing-related support is help you can get to find, or stay in, your own home. This includes help to manage money, claim benefits and develop domestic or social skills. The Supporting People team is part of the Adult Social Care Department. The money for the Supporting People programme comes from the Government as the Supporting People Grant. We use the money to pay other organisations to provide this support and to make sure that the support is as good as possible. We pay for many different support services, including sheltered housing for older people, women’s refuges, supported-living schemes for people with learning disabilities or mental health problems (where you can get housing and support), and services for young people. We work with five district and borough councils, health services and the probation service to manage the programme. What information is in the directory and how do I use it? The services in this directory are divided into service user categories (sometimes called client groups). Services that are called ‘generic’ will provide housing-related support to anyone who needs it. Within each category they are then listed in areas across the county and sorted by the type of service. So, if you are looking for a service to support a teenage parent living in the Lewes district, turn to the section on teenage parents and within that, the pages for Lewes. The types of services are categorised as: • accommodation-based services - where the housing-related support is linked to particular acommodation (or buildings); • floating support - where the support is not linked to particular accommodation and is provided in your own home; • community alarm services - an alarm system that lets you call for help; and • home improvement services - organisations that arrange repairs or adaptations to help you to stay in your own home. For each entry we give the following information: • service name; • name and identification number of organisation providing the service; • name of the person to contact for more information and their contact details; • a brief description of the service - this shows broadly the type of service provided, the groups for who the service is available, details of some of the actual services and total number of places (where these are available); and • whether you can apply to the service directly yourself or how you can be referred. 4 Do I have to pay for the service? If the service is planned to last for less than two years, it is free. These are services like women’s refuges or tenancy support workers that help you for a short amount of time while you become more independent. You only have to pay for a Supporting People service if it is planned to last for more than two years. These are services like sheltered housing where you receive support for as long as you need it. Although there is a charge for these services we will pay for the service if you get: • Housing Benefit; • the guaranteed part of Pension Credit; • Income Support; • or Jobseeker’s Allowance. If you don’t get any of these benefits but you have less than £23,250 in savings, you can ask us for a financial assessment for help towards paying for your support. We, or the organisation providing the support, can help you to apply for an assessment. How can I get more information about Supporting People?
