THAMES VIEW Summary Our house is a quiet, light and airy, end-of-terrace house, with plenty of space, and a lovely garden with areas for you to sit outside. It has steps up to the front door and upstairs bedrooms. One large, airy bedroom has a comfortable double bed and looks out over a private, green space to the River Thames. The other faces out over open fields and is available for your children or people travelling together. The two rooms share use of a bathroom with basin, bath, shower and w.c. N.B. we have a hive of friendly bees in the garden. Other things to note: • The rooms are unsuitable for visitors with mobility problems as you will need to carry your own luggage to the bedroom. • We provide keys so you can come and go as you please during your visit. • We can provide our guests with use of a washing machine, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, plenty of towels, shampoos and soaps. • Teas and coffee in your room. • We are almost always around, so if you need anything else, we will try to meet your requirements! • John is a keen cyclist and is happy to help and advise on routes, etc. • We have a strong wi-fi connection. • A folder with details of local concerts, plays, tours and exhibitions is provided and kept up to date. This folder includes maps of Oxford / Oxfordshire available to borrow - but please return them to the folder before departure. This is our family home, so we are around during your stay and available to chat, if you wish, at breakfast time. By arrangement: • A continental breakfast can be provided in your room or, if the weather is fine, it can be taken in the garden. • Guests may use the garden, when the weather is fine, to sit and chat with a drink. • We have a fully equipped kitchen that you may use to prepare light meals. There is generally no access to the other areas of the house. About our surroundings Oxford is a small city but one with a world-wide reputation because of the University. We have a Literary Festival, world-class music, theatre, museums and galleries, good food, wonderful architecture - it really is a delight. There are lovely walks from here along the river - about an hour into town. This is a good base for sightseeing, walking, cycling or messing about on the river. The Thames Path runs from Lechlade to the Thames estuary and is 100 yards from the house. Shakespeare's Way is also close by. The Chiltern and Cotswold Hills are famous for their beauty and history and a short drive away. There are a couple of pubs by the river, 200 yards and half a mile away, selling food, and an Indian restaurant in the village. There is a rich variety of birds, flowers and wildlife all around. Many artists, authors, politicians, scientists and other famous people have lived in Oxford and many still do. It is famous for the Morse stories, Philip Pullman novels, and for the 'Inklings' - a group of writers including C S Lewis (Narnia novels) and J R R Tolkein (Hobbit stories). Sandford Lock is mentioned in Jerome K Jerome's 'Three Men and a Dog' and it is said to have inspired J M Barrie's Peter Pan and Lewis Carrol's Alice novels. The neighbourhood Sandford is a small village, dating back to Roman times, with a strong community spirit. St Andrew's Church dates from the 12th Century. We have a small cafe and shop in the village selling soups, salads, cakes and filled rolls as well as basic foods. There are supermarkets and an up-market hotel close by, occupying the site of the Knights Templar Priory. The 3A bus runs every half hour Mon-Sat until 20.00 and there is a bookable bus. We are 4 miles from the centre of Oxford and provide an ideal and tranquil base for exploring Oxford and the surrounding countryside - by car, bike, public transport or on foot. It is a short walk from the Oxford Science Park and the Kassam Stadium. We are at the heart of England and it is easy to get to London, Bristol, Stratford-on-Avon, Blenheim Palace and the Chiltern and Cotswold Hills from here. There are rowing boats, punts and boat trips available on the Thames and Cherwell Rivers and the canal. The Thames Path and Shakespeare's Way pass within a hundred yards or so of our front door. There are car and bike hirers in the city and we have off-street parking for your car. We can usually arrange to pick you up from a convenient bus or train stop when you arrive. John and Hazel will usually be here to help with advice, etc. We have both travelled widely in Europe, N/Central America, Asia, NZ and Africa. We look forward to welcoming guests from around the world. We can speak a little French, German and Italian.
