2011 Spring and Summer Commencement Program.Pdf One Hundred Eighty-First FRIDAY & SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 & 6, 2011 • COLEMAN COLISEUM 2 | August 2011 Commencement COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY DecorUM AND COURTESY The faculty and staff at The University of Alabama congratulate you on your academic achievement and wish to ensure the commencement ceremony will be a fitting conclusion to this phase of your education! The University of Alabama Commencement ceremony is, by its very nature, a festive occasion. The festivity manifests itself in many ways including the dress of the students; the faculty adorned in academic regalia; and the warmth, joy and satisfaction of accomplishment. The ceremony is also marked by seriousness where the actual conferring of degrees signifies long, hard work on the part of everyone involved: students, faculty, administrators, parents and spouses. As a consequence of the serious nature of the ceremony, students and guests are expected to maintain a measure of decorum consonant with the occasion. The University community requests that audience participation be of respectful celebration honoring the commitment to learning and the fulfillment of dreams shared by all degree candidates that today walk across the stage. This element of respectful celebration also extends to the parents, guardians and spouses whose labor and support brings pride to the fulfillment of these dreams, and to the family members aspiring to one day have their moment of “walking across the stage.” CEREMONIAL FLAGS Today we celebrate commencement at The University of Alabama. To commemorate the University’s most sacred ceremony, we draw from academic traditions that are centuries old. The Commencement “A” you see throughout these materials and on the commencement flags was first introduced to mark the Capstone’s conferral of degrees at the turn of the century. The Commencement A is a seventeenth- century, Gothic font appropriately named “Diploma.” Lest We Forget... As the University family comes together to celebrate commencement and to honor the hard work and accomplishments of our May and August 2011 graduates, we also pause to acknowledge an event that significantly changed the city of Tuscaloosa forever. When we look back on April 27, 2011, however, it is the resilience of our community that stands out, not the ferocity of the storm. And, it is the compassion and generosity of our students, employees and alumni as they work tirelessly to meet the needs of our friends and neighbors that so clearly define the Capstone. The outpouring of gifts, time and supplies from UA students, faculty and staff, and alumni continues to be a source of inspiration and pride. The University expresses its deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones. We especially mourn the loss of our students: Brandon S. Atterton, Danielle M. Downs, Ashley T. Harrison, Melanie N. Mixon, Morgan M. Sigler and Marcus J. Smith. We honor their memory and the contributions they made to our community today. Our thanks go out to the first responders and everyone who worked to provide aid and assistance in the aftermath of the storm. We continue to partner with the city and county of Tuscaloosa to meet the needs of our students and employees, as well as our friends and neighbors. Tuscaloosa is a strong community, and we are working together to rebuild our city even better than it was before. We encourage every member of the UA family to continue to reach out to those in need in the communities where they live and work. At the end of the day, we are a University family united in service to our students, our faculty and staff, and our friends and neighbors, wherever we are and whenever we can help. Please know that The University of Alabama is very proud of you, and wishes you much success and happiness in the coming years. 4 | August 2011 Commencement ORDER OF EXERCISES Processional Alabama Wind Ensemble Dr. Kenneth B. Boody Capstone Inspiring Educator Award The Capstone Inspiring Educator Award salutes a high school teacher, nominated by a member of the University of Alabama graduating class, for their inspirational approach to teaching and commitment to helping students achieve their greatest potential. Nominated by graduating senior Tommy Majors from the College of Arts and Sciences, the University of Alabama salutes Mrs. Teresa Boody. Mrs. Boody founded the Latin program at Oak Mountain High School in Shelby County when she joined the faculty there in 1999. She also taught special education in Alabama public schools from 1975-1999. She says the Classics have truly made a difference in the lives of her students and have made her experiences at Oak Mountain High School “the most thrilling and fulfilling” of her career. Her enthusiastic teaching has earned her numerous awards including the Teacher of the Year for the Linda Nolen Learning Center; the Roberson Lifetime Commitment to Teaching Award from the University of Montevallo; and the 2011 College Board Southern Region Outstanding AP Teacher of the Year, among others. She holds a B.A degree in history from the University of Montevallo and a master’s degree in learning disabilities from UAB. She earned additional certification in Latin from The University of Alabama and Troy University. She was awarded a Vergilian Society scholarship to study AP Latin in Italy last summer and has participated in numerous Alabama Humanities Foundation language and culture programs. In nominating Mrs. Boody for the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award, Mr. Majors, wrote: Mrs. Boody was more than a teacher to me as I looked to her for guidance, wisdom and common sense. Her passion for teaching and her students is unrivaled. Mrs. Boody’s ability to connect on a personal level with students, discern their strengths and weaknesses, and then develop a strategy for an individual to succeed is unmatched. August 2011 Commencement | 7 Dr. Elizabeth S. Aversa Commencement Marshal Dr. Elizabeth Aversa came to the University of Alabama in 2003 as professor and director of the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

2014 was a unique year for pro-wrestling, one that will undoubtedly be viewed as historically significant in years to follow. Whether it is to be reflected upon positively or negatively is not only highly subjective, but also context-specific with major occurrences transpiring across the pro-wrestling world over the last 12 months, each with its own strong, and at times far reaching, consequences. The WWE launched its much awaited Network, New Japan continued to expand, CMLL booked lucha's biggest match in well over a decade, culminating in the country's first million dollar gate, TNA teetered more precariously on the brink of death than perhaps ever before, Daniel Bryan won the WWE's top prize, Dragon Gate and DDT saw continued success before their loyal niche audiences, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk departed the WWE with one ending up in the most unexpected of places, a developing and divergent style produced some of the best indie matches of the year, the European scene flourished, the Shield disbanded, Batista returned, Daniel Bryan relinquished his championship, and the Undertaker's streak came to an unexpected and dramatic end. These are but some of the happenings, which made 2014 the year that it was, and it is in this year-book that we look to not only recap all of these events and more, but also contemplate their relevance to the greater pro-wrestling landscape, both for 2015 and beyond. It should be stated that this year-book was inspired by the DKP Annuals that were released in 2011 and 2012, in fact, it was the absence of a 2013 annual that inspired us to produce a year-book for 2014.

Say what you will about the build to WrestleMania 32, or even recent WrestleManias in general; I don't think that many would argue with the idea that WrestleMania Weekend is the best time of the year to be a wrestling fan – perhaps only rivalled by the G1 Climax. If you are a fan of professional wrestling there will be something for you to enjoy this weekend, of that you can be sure. Top Stories: We unfortunately have some heartbreaking news to start what is the biggest week of the year for pro wrestling, as 32 year-old British wrestler Kris Travis tragically passed away after an 18 month battle with stomach cancer on 31/3. Travis was diagnosed with the disease in October 2014 and had to pull out of the second season of TNA British Bootcamp because of the diagnosis. In 2015 he underwent surgery to remove a tumour and a part of his stomach then went through 18 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, which appeared to put him on the road to recovery. Travis defied all doctors expectations and returned to the ring at a Preston City Wrestling show on August 7th 2015.

Cubed Circle Newsletter 218 – Back in Business! After the release of the 2015 Cubed Circle Yearbook last week, we return with a more regular edition of the newsletter this week covering the New Japan Tokyo Dome, the departures that followed, the news of the week including NXT signings and injuries, as well as RAW from Monday. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter, Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for January 11th – January 16th 2016. Ben Carass On January 12th New Japan officially stripped Shinsuke Nakamura of the IWGP Intercontinental title. Nakamura was scheduled to defend, and presumably lose, the belt to Kenny Omega on 14/2 at the New Beginning in Niigata after the angle on the New Year's Dash show where Omega pinned Nakamura clean, took control of the Bullet Club and challenged Nakamura to a championship match. While comparisons will be made to Alberto Del Rio not dropping the AAA Mega Heavyweight title before signing with WWE and subsequently being stripped of that title, the situation with Nakamura and Japan is completely different since, as of yet, Nakamura still has not officially signed with the WWE and, unlike Del Rio, will seemingly be allowed to work the remaining dates he has left for New Japan. There's the Fantasticamania tour from 17/1 – 24/1 and after that Nakamura's final dates will be on 29/1 in Tokorozawa, headlined by Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii & Gedo vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto,Katsuyori Shibata & Ryusuke Taguchi and 30/1 at Korakuen Hall with Nakamura, Okada & Ishii vs. Tanahashi, Goto & Shibata in an all-star main event.

Cubed Circle Newsletter 235 – Brands Be Splitting We (Ben) are back this week with issue 235, covering all of the major wrestling news from the week including Variety breaking news of the new brand split, Kane's budding political career, Rhodes resignation, Adam Rose, NOAH, surprise Ibushi appearance, Extreme Rules, RAW, and more! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for May 22nd – May 28th Ben Carass Top Stories: So in 2016 we are in fact getting another brand split, because it worked so well the last time. SmackDown will be moving to Tuesday nights starting June 19th in the 8-10pm timeslot on the USA Network. Of all places, Variety broke the story and it was reported that there will be a Draft held some time before the first live SmackDown to determine the unique rosters for each show. The move to Tuesdays will be a big help come September when the NFL returns to Thursday nights, but more noteworthy than that is the fact that the second hour of SmackDown will be head-to-head with the first hour of TNA iMPACT on Pop TV. Sky in the UK and SportsNet in Canada will also be airing SmackDown live on Tuesday. The big scoop in the Observer was the news that the current plan is to have Shane & Stephanie in charge of one show each and the belief is that Roman Reigns will remain the top star on RAW, while John Cena will be the main focus of SmackDown. Another idea they have is to bring back a second World title for SmackDown, which will undoubtedly water- down the WWE title even more, although since the whole thing is Vince McMahon's idea anything can change at this point.

These tinfoil hatters were sent further into meltdown when the TakeOver: Brooklyn show was removed from the Ticketmaster website on Monday and the event also mysteriously vanished from the WWE.com listings as well. Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline noted on 31/5 that WWE informed them Ticketmaster were updating the page with new information and logos and that the show is definitely still on. Meltzer also reported that there were even performers in NXT who were concerned about the brand potentially being shutdown because they hadn't been told anything. What a bunch of suckers. It should be noted that the TakeOver: Brooklyn show has been listed on the Barclay's Centre website the entire time during this debacle. TakeOver: Brooklyn is (still) set to kick-off three straight nights at the Barclay's Centre on 20/8, with SummerSlam the following night and RAW on 22/8.
