The Franklin Band The Franklin Band Overview Let’s be clear on this: CONCERT BAND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE DO. We are a concert band program that does marching band, not the other way around. Marching Band may be the most visible part of the program, but it’s not the most important. Yes, we have a good marching band, percussion ensemble, winterguard, and chamber winds, but it’s what happens during the band class in the school day that counts the most. If you think of it like a meal, concert band is the main course. Everything else is either an appetizer, salad, or dessert. (marching band is dessert) We want to get kids signed up for band class, then everything else falls into place. Band is good for Academics A research team reports that early music training dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills. These findings indicate that music uniquely enhances higher brain functions required for mathematics, chess, science and engineering. From Neurological Research, Feb 28, 1997; Frances Rauscher, Ph.D., Gordon Shaw, Ph.D, University of California, Irvine Harris Interactive released the results of a poll analyzing the effects of music education on top Fortune 1000 company executives, and it was discovered that overall, just under three-quarters of executives (73%) were involved in some type of music program while in school. And, the longer that executives participated in classroom music programs, the more successful they became in life. Arts involvement teaches children many skills necessary to succeed in life, including problem solving and decision making, building self-confidence and self-discipline, the ability to imagine what might be and to accept responsibility for it, teamwork, the development of informed perception, and articulating a vision. Compiled fom various research documents and reports The College Entrance Examination Board found that students involved in public school music programs scored 107 points higher on the SAT's than students with no participation. Profiles of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The Colege Board, compiled by the Music Educators National Conference (2002) Last year, the band's average ACT score was 27.2, well above school, district, and state averages. If our band were a state, we'd have the highest state average! Our band is nationally recognized 1996 Tournament of Roses Parade 1989 and 1998 Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 Bands of America Regional Champions and/or Class Champions 2013 Music for All National Concert Festival 2013 and 2017 Music for All National Percussion Festival 2014 Sudler Shield, presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation 2015 and 2017 Music for All National Chamber Music Festival 2012, 2013, 2015 Bands of America Class AAA National Runner Up And our color guard is the 2015 Southeastern Color Guard Circuit Champs! Our students succeed as individuals This year we had nearly 20 students in All Mid-State Band, 3 in All-State, and 3 in the Music for All National Honor Band. We always have several band kids in the top 20 of each class and we have students in the IB program. Almost every year, we have band students in Girl’s State, Boy’s State, and one of the Governor’s Schools. We have National Merit Scholars in band at Franklin. We are a community within FHS Being a part of the Franklin band gives 9th graders a connection to older students, aiding the transition to high school. Our upper classmen can help younger students get acclimated to the school by mentoring and tutoring. If you’re concerned about your child’s social network, our band is comprised of some of the best kids at Franklin! Our band kids go to great universities In the last few years we’ve had students get accepted to Tennessee, Wake Forest, Auburn, Alabama, Rose- Hulhman, Rhodes, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Baylor, Vanderbilt, Penn, Purdue, UCLA just to name a few..... Last year’s seniors were offered nearly $5,000,000 in music, leadership, and academic scholarships. Band kids are well rounded They participate in a number of activities here at Franklin, including several honor societies. Band kids are also athletes in football, wrestling, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, rugby, cross country, softball, swim, tennis and others. We have quite a few JROTC students too. We have great kids in band We have numerous Boy Scouts with their Eagle Scout and Girl Scouts with Gold and Silver Awards. Lots of students go on summer mission trips and volunteer in the community. Band students are leaders in Franklin High's many clubs and organizations. We have a plan. We have a purpose, a set of 10 core values, a BHAG, and a vivid description that we use to guide us. We added a Hedgehog Concept this spring. Visit the quick facts section of our website for more info. We've been working this plan since 2011 and it's yielded some incredible results. The plan is based on a book by Jim Collins called Built to Last. Now about marching band… We make great memories! Band kids spend a lot of time together and build healthy relationships that help them through high school. They make lots of great memories! Parent relationships are important! Our parents build relationships with other band parents, and with their children. Franklin High supports us Assistant Principals! We get standing ovations at home football games and the school administration supports the band. We perform in spectacular venues... ...like Lucas Oil Stadium, site of Super Bowl XLVI! Being in marching band takes commitment. There's a financial commitment. Our total fee and fundraising expectation will be in the $900 range, per student. That covers transportation to games and contests, 7 overnight stays, several meals, 5 days of band camp, the cost of show design and production, and many other little things. There's a significant time and effort commitment. We have rehearsals and classes beginning in April, during the summer, and the fall. Visit www.thefranklinband.org for our full schedule and calendar. Calendar…What happens now? FHS Counselors begin scheduling students on March 2. Spring and Summer Marching Band Movement classes, guard & percussion auditions in April and May Mini Camp last week of May. <<<<<Very important! Percussion and Color Guard camps in June and July Summer rehearsals in July for brass/woodwinds Band Camp 3rd week of July Concert band begins when school starts in August Fall Schedule Marching Band rehearses after school on M, T, Th, F; Saturdays are pretty busy too with camp days or contests. Sept 16: WilCo Exhibition, Sept 23: Hickman County High School Band Contest Oct 7: FHS Contest, Oct 21: BOA Indianapolis Regional Oct 28: MTSU Contest of Champions, November 9-11: BOA Grand Nationals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis One more thing… We are trying to build up our numbers in color guard. So… Consider guard as a option for marching band. Recruit friends who aren’t currently in band for color guard! Dance experience helps We’d like to have 40 members in our award winning color guard! Reasons to be in band at Franklin Success in high school is very much related to spending time around great kids, and we have great kids. Music study is a life-long gift, and music study helps in other academic areas. When students begin building their resume for college and scholarships, students can list the band’s many accomplishments. Parents spending time with their children in a school related activity can strengthen family bonds. Find us online at www.thefranklinband.org. Richard King creates harmony through musical relationships By Jeremy Essig n 1982, Richard King booked a little-known band with a randomly chosen acronym to play at The Blue Note. Both the nightclub and the band, which had just recorded its first album, were 2 years old at the time. Following an appearance in support of their album Chronic Town, Michael Stipe and the other members of R.E.M. were about to leave The Blue Note, though known for building up on him. “I said, ‘No, it was Columbia when King’s partner Phil Costello noticed they were about bands, also holds a notorious place in alternative definitely (Costello).’” to loose a tire on their van, recalled Kevin Walsh – a longtime friend music history as the spot where an influential band Although The Blue Note of both King and Costello. self-destructed. might have missed out on Crow, When it came time to pay them, Costello provided extra money to Minnesota’s Husker Du, touring in support of King played an integral role in the purchase a new tire for the band, which would go on to become one 1987’s Warehouse: Songs and Stories, played their development of another regional of the most famous in rock and roll history. final show at The Blue Note. SHAKE YOUR FAITH Diamond Day Records Is Very Excited to Announce the Release of the Steepwater Band’S 6Th Full-Length Studio Album SHAKE YOUR FAITH

THE STEEPWATER BAND : SHAKE YOUR FAITH Diamond Day Records is very excited to announce the release of The Steepwater Band’s 6th full-length studio album SHAKE YOUR FAITH. The LP features 11 brand new TSB tracks, and is slated for release on Friday, April 1st via Double 180 Gram Vinyl, Compact Disc and Digital Download. The album was recorded last winter at Crushtone Studios, in the shadows of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio. Shake Your Faith was produced by the band along with seasoned rock studio veteran Jim Wirt, who has also worked with the likes of Fiona Apple, Incubus and the Buffalo Killers. As with most TSB albums, the sound and songwriting on Shake Your Faith has grown and expanded, yet retained the true nature of the band. It’s the first TSB studio record in over 4 years and the first to include “new” guitarist Eric Saylors. "SHAKE YOUR FAITH is a stomping, seductive cry that real rock 'n' roll is alive and well in a band with the swagger, justified confidence, and badass tunes of a modern classic, a collection with all the heart and hips of 70s Stones and serious competition to contemporaries like The Black Keys, Ben Harper, and Jack White." - Dennis Cook {Dirty Impound} • Their song “Dance Me a Number” from Revelation Sunday receives nearly 10,000 spins on Pandora daily, on such channels as The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, and more. • Their 2010 single The Stars Look Good Tonight reached # 109 on the Triple A radio charts and it was featured during the June 29, 2010, WGN-TV (nationally syndicated) broadcast of the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball game.

Cut from the same cloth as Al Tuck or Peter Elkas, Bahamas is a sleepy, soulful project for an artist with great instincts and the will to execute deceptively simple music with knowing taste. Though the instrumentation is often understated, songs like "Hockey Teeth" reveal a classic sensibility whose wooing charms become more apparent with subsequent listens. The acoustic finger- style and slide guitar employed on "For Good Reason" push the song out of the ordinary, while a great pop heart beats loudly within the sparse, heartbroken "What's Worse?" Iowa Journal of Cultural Studies is produced by The Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress). https://ir.uiowa.edu/ijcs “Funky Days Are Back Again”: Reading Seven ties Nostalgia in Late-Nineties Rock Music David Sigler Observers of North American and British popular culture witnessed a strange and richly interesting phenomenon unfold between 1995 and 1999. During this period, the culture industry and its creative talent insistently described itself through Sev enties imagery. The period oversaw the theatrical release of Jackie Brown, 54, and Velvet Goldmine as well as the television debut of That 970s Show, The State's “Barry and Levon,” and the Travoltaesque Jack and Steve Butabi on Saturday Night Live. In response to our appetite for Seventies icons, formerly popular bands like the Sex Pistols, Steely Dan, Page and Plant, the Bee Gees, and the Guess Who scrambled to re-form after twenty-year hiatuses. Costumed hard-rockers Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, working in the tradition of Alice Cooper and KISS, became high school anthem-bearers. It seems that the late Nineties endured a flood of Seventies imagery across its popular media. In an effort to reexamine the mechanics of popular nostalgia, this essay will engage only a small—but astonishing—corner of this phenomenon: the present- looking Seventies nostalgia of the late Nineties in rock music.

Album of the Week: Wilco’S Star Wars

Album Of The Week: Wilco’s Star Wars Once in a while, a talented and established band will blindside the masses with an unexpected release. It causes a buzz for a few days among the band’s loyal fans. That’s pretty much what happened when Chicago Americana rock act Wilco unexpectedly released Star Wars a few days ago. The release has a fuzzy psychedelic edge to it, glossing over Jeff Tweedy’s trademark rhythmic strums while unleashing guitar slinging madman Nels Cline on every track. Definitely a refreshing record to come out in a year filled with musical gems, Star Wars reaches for the skies. The band’s 9th studio album, Star Wars has a lot of grit. Wilco strays even more away from the pop sensibilities of previous albums Sky Blue Sky and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and gets back to their roots. It has a similar sound to the band’s 1995 debut A.M., but there’s a heavier bass tone and you’ll hear tinges of garage rock and blues. A few tracks are absolutely nasty (in a good way) and soulful; you can’t help but dig what Wilco is doing from front to back. Ladies and gentlemen, Star Wars is proof that one of America’s favorite rock bands just got weirder. The name of Wilco’s new album is pretty interesting, huh? Star Wars? Did George Lucas help finance the record? Are Wilco the new Mos Eisley house band in The Force Awakens? We’re going to find out from the band sooner or later.
