Last Match UTRGV Drops WAC Opener Sept. 20, 2018 at Icardo Center – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team dropped its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opener to CSU Bakersfield 1-3 (25-16, 20-25, 25-27, 18-25). Senior Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (9-6, 0-1 WAC) with 13 kills and a career-high tying 18 digs for her fifth double-double. Senior Dubravka Vukoja posted her second double-double with 38 assists, a career-high tying 19 digs and a season-high tying three aces. Desiree Sukhov led CSU Bakersfield (7-6, 1-0 WAC) with 12 kills and 11 digs. Brooke Boiseau finished with 11 kills and six blocks. A kill by junior Barbara Silva and two by Knudsen helped UTRGV score the first three points of the match. UTRGV extended its lead to 12-7 on an error before CSU Bakersfield scored six in a row to take the lead. A Knudsen kill and back-to-back kills by senior Antonela Jularic, however, sparked a 5-0 run to put UTRGV up 17-13. Then, after CSU Bakersfield pulled within 16-18, a kill and two aces by Silva helped UTRGV score the final seven points to end the set. UTRGV jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set as well, but CSU Bakersfield responded with an 11-2 run to take the lead for the rest of the set and tie the match at 1. UTRGV reached set point in the third set at 24-20 on a Vukoja ace. CSU Bakersfield, however, responded with five-straight points, the last two of which came on Boiseau kills to take the lead. After an error tied the set, a kill and a block by Rafa Bonifacio ended the set. UTRGV led early in the fourth set, going up 7-4 on an error and 13-12 on a kill by senior Barbara Thais Krug. CSU Bakersfield responded with a 6-1 run to take an 18-14 lead. UTRGV got as close as 17-19 on a block by Knudsen and senior Alexandra Ecker before CSU Bakersfield closed the match on a 6-1 run.

Previous Matches UTRGV Closes Out Non-Confernce Play with Win Over Houston Baptist Sept. 15, 2018 at UTRGV Fieldhouse – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team closed out non-conference play with a 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Houston Baptist University (HBU) to close out the UTRGV Tournament. Senior Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (9-5) with her fourth double-double of the season after recording a match-high 18 kills with 16 digs. Senior Antonela Jularic posted a double-double with a season-high 14 kills and 12 digs. Senior Dubravka Vukoja paced UTRGV’s offense with 49 assists while senior Gysell Zayas paced the defense with a match-high 28 digs. Mikayla Vivens led HBU (7-7) with 17 kills, 24 digs, and five blocks while Catherine Drapela added nine kills with three digs. UTRGV and HBU kept it close early on in the first set that saw seven ties and five lead changes. UTRGV found itself trailing 7-8 but a 13-0 run gave them the 20-8 lead. Kills by Knudsen, an ace by Vukoja, and a kill by junior Barbara Silva closed out the set giving UTRGV the early advantage. In the second set, HBU jumped out to the 6-3 lead before UTRGV rallied back to tie it after a kill by senior Alexandra Ecker and a pair of HBU errors. HBU built up its lead to 18-13 but UTRGV answered with a 7-0 run capped by three straight kills from Ecker, Silva, and Knudsen to take the 20-18 lead. HBU closed out the set by scoring five of the final eight points to tie the match at one set apiece. UTRGV came out in the third set determined to take control of the match and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a kill by Silva. The set was tied at 10-10 but UTRGV took the lead for good as they closed out the set with a 15-5 run. The final set saw 10 ties and six lead changes as HBU came out and grabbed the early 6-4 lead but UTRGV regained the lead 7-6 with kills from Silva, Ecker, and Vukoja. UTRGV pushed its lead to 10-7 after an attack error by HBU but HBU rallied to take the 15-14 lead after a UTRGV error. It was the last lead held by HBU as UTRGV closed out the set and the match with an 11-5 run for the victory.

UTRGV Falls to Texas Tech in Front of Record Crowd Sept. 14, 2018 at UTRGV Fieldhouse – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to Texas Tech 1-3 (19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 17-25) in front of a record crowd of 2,176 during the UTRGV Tournament. Senior Ragni Steen Knudsen became the ninth member of the UTRGV (8-5) 1,000 kills club, now with 1,011 after recording a match-high 19 kills on .375 hitting with 13 digs for her third double-double of the season. Junior Barbara Silva finished with 12 kills and seven digs. Senior Antonela Jularic posted her second double-double with 11 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Senior Gysell Zayas posted a season-high 31 digs. Senior Dubravka Vukoja dished out a match-high 50 assists. Emily Hill led Texas Tech (10-3) with 16 kills and 15 digs. Chandler Atwood finished with 13 kills. Katy Keenan recorded 10 kills with five blocks. The first set was tight most of the way, as there were three lead changes and 12 ties. UTRGV had leads of 1-0 on a kill by junior Talita Oliveira, 2-1 on a Knudsen kill, and 9-7 on back-to-back Knudsen kills. UTRGV tied the set at 17 on a Jularic kill before Texas Tech went on an 8-2 run to end the set. UTRGV jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set on a Vukoja ace and a Silva kill. Texas Tech scored the next six points to take the lead before UTRGV went on a 9-5 run to take the lead on a Jularic kill. Then, with the score tied at 14, a Jularic kill and a Zayas ace sparked a 7-2 run to put UTRGV up 21-16. Texas Tech won three of the next four serves to get close, but UTRGV used a Vukoja ace and a Silva kill to score three of the final four points. Texas Tech jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the third set. Knudsen responded with four kills to power a 7-2 run to bring UTRGV within 19-22. Then, with the score 19-24, a pair of Silva kills helped UTRGV pull within 23-24 before a block by Keenan and Atwood ended the set. UTRGV went on a late run in the fourth set as well, as down 12-23, three Jularic kills and two kills by senior Alexandra Ecker helped UTRGV get as close as 17-23.
