Most of us say “that wasn’t too bad, at least it is a dry cold.” For the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the start of spring brings us much enthusiasm about the season offerings for the coming year, but it also gives us extra appreciation for the concerts we are able to attend in the spring. I am looking forward to hearing Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe perform Bach’s Double Concerto followed by the monumental Bruckner’s 9th Symphony. The partnership with Rainbow Stage continues with a wonderful performance of A Chorus Line, we perform great choral masterpieces at St. Boniface Cathedral in recognition of the anniversary of the diocese, and we welcome exciting young pianist Luca Buratto to the WSO. And, of course, we look forward to a performance with the irrepressible Al Simmons, our local genius. What else can we anticipate in the months to come? Well, the annual Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Spring Gala on April 26 will move to the Centennial Concert Hall and Alloway Hall this year. The event will be connected to an exclusive performance of the orchestra and cast members from Cirque de la symphonie. Gala events are wonderful ways to celebrate as a community of WSO supporters, but attending the gala is not the only way to support the legacy of symphonic music in Winnipeg.You can enter the Symphony Sweepstakes, make a donation to the WSO Friends or Maestro’s Circle Programs, or remember the WSO in your estate planning.

So much changed in our world since our last meeting. Fortunately, one thing didn't change and that's music. For many of us, music is now more important than ever. The month of March remains the constant, as the winter is holding back and the spring is pulling forward. It's also the month, during which, Medicine Hat is going to live for music. The music, that beautiful gift to humankind. It means a different thing to different people. For some, "music can bring cultures into a universal conversation that is beyond intellect or reason, but which is heartfelt." For some "it takes us into a world apart, a world beyond self and ego, the place of emotion that touches the soul".

    A WORD ABOUT THIS CONCERT: November 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the First World War. Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir of Ottawa and the Parkdale United Church Or- chestra have commissioned Canadian composer Christine Donkin to create a new work for choir and or- chestra commemorating the centenary of Armistice. This brilliant and moving new work focuses on wom- en’s perceptions of war, drawing on texts that reflect the wartime experiences of three Canadian women: French-Canadian Blanche Bessette, English-Canadian Nellie McClung, and Edith Monture, a Mohawk First World War Veteran who was the first Indigenous-Canadian woman to become a registered nurse. This commission’s premiere tonight forms the keystone of a moving program of music featuring reper- toire that celebrates peace and freedom, with works for choir and orchestra that look deeply into universal truths surrounding the heartbreak of war, and the pain of separation and loss. A musical journey across Europe and time, the concert incorporates an orchestral and choral medley of wartime songs with a narra- tive that speaks to the range of perspectives and emotions involved in this conflict and the end of hostili- ties.   • Walking Through Light with a Bachelor of Education
    Founding Artistic Director Laura Hawley is a Canadian composer, conductor, and pianist, known for her vibrant and connected artistic programming, pianistic sensitivity, community engagement, and multi-faceted compositions. Laura is the Artistic Director of Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir of Ottawa, which she founded in 2015. She has worked with a wide variety of community-based choral and orchestral ensembles throughout Canada including CAMMAC, Music & Beyond (Ottawa), Choirs Ontario, Choir Alberta, Nova Scotia Choral Federation, and Choral Canada. She was recently appointed singer, pianist, and featured composer with the Canadian Chamber Choir and is active as a clinician for groups across the country. She is a founding pianist and associate conductor of the Cantiamo Choirs of Ottawa, and was their composer-in-residence from 2003-2017. From 2007 to 2018 she was Director of Music at St. John’s South March Anglican Church, leading the adult choir and establishing a thriving parish youth choir. In 2014, 2016, and 2018 she was nominated for the prestigious “Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting.” Laura Hawley has taught at both of Ottawa’s universities as a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa in the position of Coordinator of the Solfe ge program at the School of Music, and at Carleton University School for Studies in Art & Culture (Music) as an Associate Performance Faculty Member (teaching classical piano) and Contract Instructor (teaching conducting and theory). She teaches piano, theory, harmony and history in her studio. Laura Hawley’s compositions have been commissioned and performed internationally for 15 years. She has composed works for choirs across Canada, including Elektra Women’s Choir, Pro Coro Canada, Inuksuk Drum Dancers, Canadian Chamber Choir, Spiritus Chamber Choir, Orpheus Choir, and Cantiamo Girls Choir.
