In both indexes, the subject or author (given in bold print) is followed by the title of the article; then (in bold again) the issue and page number, separated by a dash. For example, 1-10 is Issue 1, page 10; 85-12 is issue 85, page 12; and so on. See the table on pages 2 & 3 for the dates of each SubCommittee Report issue number. This is just a general index in that only article titles and authors are referenced. A normal index would include all references to particular subjects found within articles; that is not the case here. For example, just about any article written on building a model submarine will include a detailed description of the approach taken to constructing the hull or ballast tank, but the subject headings “Hull/Hull Layout” and “Ballast System/Tanks” only list articles that are specifically about those subjects; more, of course, will be found in articles and columns under other subject headings, which include the names of specific submarines and vendors. When there is overlap among topics in an article, it may be listed under more than one subject heading. Where there are two or more authors, the article will be listed under each one. Regular Columns: Over the years, The SubCommittee Report has seen columns come and go; these are always identified with the designation “(column)” after the title. In some cases, when deemed appropriate, the subtitles or contents of articles are listed under the column name. Most of the time, however, there is simply a list of issue-page numbers following the name. For specific topics covered in columns, see other subject headings where, in the list of articles, the column title name is given first, followed by the article title (e.g.: “The Engineering Deck: Objects of Fascination: Coastal Submarines: 93-34). Alphabetization The editor of this index has chosen a word-by-word approach to alphabetization, meaning that once a space is inserted, alphabetization is interrupted. Words containing dashes, hyphens, and apostrophes are treated as single words, without the punctuation. Otherwise a strict letter-by- letter alphabetization rule has been applied, which means, for example, that Mac and Mc names are not grouped together but are in their correct alphabetical location—e.g.: MacDonald, Old / Martin, Bob / May, Don / McCue, Brian / Meagher, David / etc. The articles A and The at the beginning of a title or subject are ignored in alphabetization, which begins with the next word, but they are included for alphabetizing purposes later in the sentence – for example: Building a 1/96th R/C Skipjack / Building a Fiberglass Hull / Building Flugelman’s Seaview / Building the Deep Sea Designs Alfa Kit / etc. Numbers rendered as numbers (e.g., ‘9’ rather than ‘Nine’) are usually placed first in the sentence or list, followed by spelled-out words. Sometimes, however, convenience calls for numbers to be placed as if they are spelled out; apologies for any confusion caused by this. 1 Final Note Nobody’s perfect, and The SubCommittee Report has its share of typos and misspellings, not just in the article texts but also in headlines and author names. The SCR has also gone through several format and style changes. Most, but probably not all, have been corrected in this index. The editor, being human, has undoubtedly also made the occasional goof, including typos on page numbers, but we are happy to make good on them when they are pointed out.
