EUROPE AND THE RESHAPED GLOBAL ORDER The past three years have witnessed the beginnings of a fundamental change in Europe and its standing in the world. Europe’s attractiveness as a global role model for supranational cooperation and regional integration has suffered from the economic crisis and attempts to find solutions to its ongoing financial and political woes. Under the title ‘Europe and the Reshaped Global Order’, Bled Strategic Forum 2012 will examine the EU’s situation in the new strategic land- scape, its partnerships with emerging economies, the question of how Asia and Europe can respond to future crises, and Europe’s challenges in the Mediterra- nean and the Balkans.

In terms of purchase power standards in relation to the EU average, the region has an index of 122 for 2009 (i.e. over 22% above the European average) whereas the Slovenian average index is 89; in Slovenia, only the Obalnokraška region – with an index of approximately 93 – exceeds this average. These rather ambiguous data – which reveal considerable differences between the regions (although these differences are small in Slovenia compared to some other countries) – show that central Slovenia is a very strong economic engine.

There are people in the world who would do anything to get their name on the front pages of newspapers and magazines and who fervently wish to become the lead item on the evening news, at least for a few minutes.
