Magashi is in the only private access area in Akagera and therefore they can offer exclusive night game drives and walking safaris in addition to their day-time game drives.     - A Wilderness Kitchen - Bisoke Lava Pudding The evocative scene of Mount Bisoke is a dominant feature of the scenic views from Bisate Lodge. This dessert was inspired by the events of 1957 when Bisoke last erupted. Today a crater lake is found on the summit, inspiring the name Bisoke – the Swahili word for “soaked with water” Ingredients Method 2 eggs 1. Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Place the eggs, yolks and 2 egg yolks vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer and whisk for 4–5 1 tsp vanilla extract minutes or until very thick and pale. Add caramel treat and 11/4 cups (450 g) tinned caramel treat/dulce de leche coffee and whisk on low speed until just combined. ½ cup (125 ml) strong Rwandan coffee ¼ cup (35 g) plain (all-purpose) flour, sifted 2. Add the flour and carefully fold through the mixture. Divide the mixture between 4 cup metal dariole moulds. 3. Place the moulds on a small baking tray and cook for 10 minutes or until golden brown but still slightly soft in the middle. Allow to stand in the moulds for 1 minute. 4. Using a small knife, carefully loosen the edges of the mould and invert the puddings onto the plates. Serve immediately with ice cream. Serves 4 mountain gorilla Mount Bisoke MountBisoke (or Visoke for some) is a dormant volcano that stands 3711 metres above sea-level and rises from the border, sharing a home with the Congo. The greater part of its mass, however, is located in Rwanda and forms part of the Virunga Massif range of the Volcanoes National Park.

The legendary Virunga Mountains in the north are home to volcanoes, swathes of cloud forest and half the world’s total population of Critically Endangered mountain gorillas. To the west lies Lake Kivu, one of the world’s deepest lakes, with a depth of 475 metres (1 558 feet.). The country supports impressive diversity and endemism which is conserved by its national parks, including the Volcanoes, Akagera, Gishwati-Mukura and Nyungwe national parks. Received 18 January, 2014; Accepted 27 February, 2014 Hagenia-shaped habitat is an important element in conservation of world’s only population of mountain gorillas surviving in the wild. In fact, in the Parc National des Volcans (henceforth PNV), gorillas spend most of their life time in the nutritious herbaceous habitats near or within the Hagenia-Hypericum zone. Unfortunately, populations of Hagenia abyssinica in this park have been reported to be ageing. Using information drawn from the statistical analysis of records in herbaria and the cross−examination of the literature, the status of Hagenia forest in PNV is discussed. The results show that H. abyssinica in PNV has an unusual pattern of population structure and distribution, seemingly since many decades. No record of H. abyssinica was collected from PNV, but patterns of collections of H. abyssinica are globally similar to those of a set of five control tree species, such that this absence of records from this park cannot be considered as due to collector or collection site-bound bias.

In this study previous geoscientific data are reviewed, a prerequisite for choosing good sites for three exploration wells. Also, the possible threats of the proximity of the Karisimbi prospect to the mountain gorillas, whose habitat is within the National Volcanoes Park, are discussed. Even though geothermal energy is environmentally friendly, as much less CO2 is emitted than through the use of fossil fuels, it has adverse impacts on the environment. The immediate possible impacts on the mountain gorillas and other endemic and threatened species of animals will be caused by noise from well discharging and testing, and the unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulphide. Exploration drilling has short term socio- economic impacts and benefits on the local community. Therefore, geothermal fluid might be recycled for minimizing environmental pollution while directional drilling and re-injection of the fluid are proposed in the future. A full environmental impact assessment must be carried out prior to drilling and any potential impacts should be addressed before granting any permits. An integrated environmental monitoring program, involving all stakeholders, is recommended throughout all phases of the project. For such, information on the following is necessary: (i) knowledge of the movements of endangered species in the park, (ii) the level of geothermal gas emissions at all times and (iii) the opinion of the local people on the different kinds of disturbances and the benefits of the project.
