18. .19 Have Dunster villagers’ discovered a new Roman settlement at Dunster Beach? It all started with a chance discovery by a local man, Phil Webber, last summer when walking along Dunster Beach. He noticed big shards of pottery sticking out of the low beach cliff and he picked a few out. Returning to the site over successive days, more pottery was falling out and some looked like they might be part of the same pot.

Fast forward to October, when Time Team - Dig Village returned to Dunster to continue its programme of test pits, Phil gathered the shards up and presented them to one of the Time Team pot experts. To Phil’s astonishment, and that of the collected village gathering, the expert said that the shards were definitely Roman – surprising because no actual Roman evidence of occupation has ever been found in Dunster. The expert then before their eyes put the shards together into a pot. Over the winter, the beach was battered by successive storms, with several feet of the cliff being washed away, and more pot falling out. Phil collected all the pot shards, and the Dunster Museum Archaeology Group has had much fun trying to piece them together into 6 large pots.

Worried that this unique find would be lost forever, Somerset County Council referred Phil onto a project called CITiZAN, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which helps local people investigate archaeology on the coast at risk from coastal erosion. And so it was in spring this year, CITiZAN with help from Heritage England, came to Dunster Beach and helped Dunster villagers survey the field next to the beach. It was a horrendous 4 days, blowing a gale and absolutely freezing. Made worse because nobody could wear anything metallic because it would affect the equipment. So everyone looked like Michelin men, with layers and layers of clothing, ready to whip out bin bags to keep themselves dry.

Our first attempt at surveying found possible signs of double ditches and square enclosures, characteristic of Romano-British Settlements. Plus a local metal detectorist has found some Roman coins in the vicinity and Time Team has just this week revealed that one of the test pits in Dunster High Street turned up a bit of Roman pottery. Because the results are so exciting for the village, CITiZAN and Heritage England are returning in the autumn, so the survey area can be extended and the village is hoping Time Team will be able to help them explore further, perhaps even underground……………
