  • Did Wigan Have a Northern Soul?
Did Wigan have a Northern Soul? Introduction The town of Wigan in Lancashire, England, will forever be associated with the Northern Soul scene because of the existence of the Casino Club, which operated in the town between 1973 and 1981. By contrast, Liverpool just 22 miles west, with the ‘the most intensely aware soul music Black Community in the country’, (Cohen, 2007, p.31 quoting from Melody Maker, 24 July 1976) remained immune to the attractions of Northern Soul and its associated scene, music, subculture and mythology. Similarly, the city of Manchester has been more broadly associated with punk and post-punk. Wigan was and remains indelibly connected to the Northern Soul scene with the Casino representing a symbolic location for reading the geographical, class and occupational basis of the scene’s practitioners. The club is etched into the history, iconography, and mythology of Northern Soul appearing in the academic and more general literature, television documentaries, memoirs, autobiographies and feature films. This chapter seeks to explore the relationship between history, place, class, industrialisation, mythology and nostalgia in terms of Wigan, the Casino Club and the Northern Soul scene. It asks the question: did Wigan have a northern soul? This is explored through the industrial and working-class history of the town and the place of soul music in its post-war popular culture. More broadly, it complements the historical literature on regional identity identifying how Northern Soul both complemented and challenged orthodox readings of Wigan as a town built on coal and cotton that by the 1970s was entering a process of deindustrialisation.

  • Young Soul Rebels? Soul Scenes in Seventies Britain
Young soul rebels? Soul scenes in seventies Britain David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. One of my earliest and most formative musical experiences took place at the age of eight or nine. It must have been in 1963 that I happened to watch James Brown playing live on the commercial TV show Ready Steady Go! It wasn’t just his rasping and pleading vocals that I found so compelling, or his astonishing dancing. I can still recall the moment where Brown seemed to break down in an apparent excess of soulful emotion, or perhaps physical exhaustion. He dropped to his knees, sweating profusely, as an assistant wrapped a cloak around him and ushered him off stage. Brown proceeded to throw off the cloak, grabbed the mic and returned to performing. Little did I know that this routine was a regular feature of Brown’s act. For a lower-middle-class white boy in suburban Britain, it was a kind of revelation: it suggested that music could be something other than the bland, white mainstream pop that my parents seemed to like. Soul music has stayed with me. While I grew up with Tamla-Motown, I was obviously much too young to be a mod; although by the time I arrived at my hippy teenage- hood, I was still listening to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.

Northern Soul Scene Project Steve Allen (SA) interviewed by Jason Mitchell (JM) Date: 20th July 2020 JM: Perfect, great stuff. So and the date is where are we the 20th? Yep, 20th of July. And my name is Jason Mitchell, I’m the interviewer. And could I ask you for your first name, please? SA: My first name is Steve. JM: Could you spell that for us? SA: STEVE. JM: And your surname? SA: Allen, ALLEN. JM: That's perfect. And this is a telephone interview for the northern soul project. Could I ask you where you were born? SA: I was born in Peterborough, Thorpe Hall to be exact. JM: Right, that's perfect. And would you mind telling us roughly when you were born? SA: When? 1948. JM: That's perfect, thank you very much. And were …. have you been known by any other previous names, say nicknames or any other names that someone else might have referred to you in these interviews as long as they were polite? SA: I'm sure there's lots of names, but no I have no other nicknames, pseudonyms, or stage names other than Steve Allen. JM: Perfect, that's great stuff. Okay, so the first thing I'm going to sort of do, just ask you a very broad question, and then we're kind of from there, I'll pick out bits to manoeuvre us down. Could you just tell us sort of about your introduction to northern soul and … and sort of the feel and how that was for you? SA: Okay, right.

  • 2.4. Participation and Role in the Northern Soul Scene
2.4. Participation and role in the Northern soul scene Sarah Raine1 and Tim Wall2 Abstract This article uses the current northern soul scene as a case study to explore the mythologising process of “self-documentation” evident in the practices of music fans in DIY cultures. By focusing on the construction of scene histories, we offer the idea of myth-making as a useful frame through which to explore music cultures that demonstrate DIY elements as central scene practices. Through this paper we offer two different approaches to understanding the northern soul scene, both of which frame origin stories as myth and make use our distinct personal experience as scene insiders. The analysis presents the northern soul scene as a DIY culture, draws upon ideas of myth from anthropology and cultural studies, and uses an innovative collaborative approach. By working together as a critical, self-reflexive inter-generational team we offer new insights into northern soul and provide some potential models for the study of other music scenes. Keywords: DIY culture, myth, Northern soul. 1. Self-documenting and DIY cultures Northern soul is a DIY culture. Like other DIY cultures, participants on the northern soul scene are involved in intensive self-documentation, a practice often associated with accounting for the origins and past of the scene. As we will show, northern soul scene participants have a tendency to mythologise their own past. Using the northern soul scene as a case study we propose that this practice is a characteristic of DIY cultures more generally. From our relative positions within the scene we are able to offer distinct generational conceptualisations of scene insider and outsider.

  • Apollos / Apollas
“My Soul Concerto” The Story of The Apollos by Opal Louis Nations During the early 1960s, an ambitious number of San Francisco Bay Area hopeful harmonists were inspired by such leading female gospel luminaries of the day as the Caravans, Gospel Harmonettes and Stars of Faith to travel the church circuit. Among the best remembered were the Andrews Singers of Berkeley who were fortunate enough to record for Capitol Records, Odessa Perkins and the Lathanettes who waxed for John Reid of Reid’s Records, Wayne Stovall & The Valley Wonders who cut for Don Robey’s Song Bird imprint and a Golden Gate City group strongly rooted in the Post War vocal tradition known variously as the Appollos, Apollos, Lovejoys, Apollas and Love Salvation. The Apollas (whose name was originally swiped from Bess Berman’s legendary Apollo diskery in New York), cut the “o” and switched it with an “a” to avoid confusion with other Apollo groups on a slew of minor labels. They sounded, at least early on, like a cross between the polished singing Sweet Inspirations (formerly the Drinkard Singers) and the sanctified, tough-throated Davis Sisters who smoked the church. The group started as gospel-gals, switched to soul-pop, then R & B, building their sound around the awe-inspiring pipes of the elegantly beautiful Leola Jiles. The Apollas knocked-em-dead during the peak of their lifespan which, according to Ella Jamerson-Haynes, was the 1961 through 1964 period. To tell the Apollas’ story, I have chosen to dwell on the experiences of two of the pivotal members, Ella ______________________________________________________________________________ The Apollas, p.
