Percussion Cata Lo G U E Classical Percussion © Philipp Rathmer CLASSICAL PERCUSSION CATA LO G U E CLASSICAL PERCUSSION Percussion instruments have always been a feature of traditional music and, more recently, as the backbone for popular and world music cultures. But music for the classical percussion department has taken enormous strides in the last half century, progressing from a monochromatic underscoring of rhythms to a highly complex palette of timbres that can depict delicacy or emit explosions of sound with a versatility that composers are increasingly keen to explore. The recordings in this catalogue present a mix of styles and roles for the prolific sounds of the percussion family, from chamber music to concerto platforms, with a seemingly inexhaustible range of expression. • On the Question of the Baroque Instrumental Concerto Typology
Musica Iagellonica 2012 ISSN 1233-9679 Piotr WILK (Kraków) On the question of the Baroque instrumental concerto typology A concerto was one of the most important genres of instrumental music in the Baroque period. The composers who contributed to the development of this musical genre have significantly influenced the shape of the orchestral tex- ture and created a model of the relationship between a soloist and an orchestra, which is still in use today. In terms of its form and style, the Baroque concerto is much more varied than a concerto in any other period in the music history. This diversity and ingenious approaches are causing many challenges that the researches of the genre are bound to face. In this article, I will attempt to re- view existing classifications of the Baroque concerto, and introduce my own typology, which I believe, will facilitate more accurate and clearer description of the content of historical sources. When thinking of the Baroque concerto today, usually three types of genre come to mind: solo concerto, concerto grosso and orchestral concerto. Such classification was first introduced by Manfred Bukofzer in his definitive monograph Music in the Baroque Era. 1 While agreeing with Arnold Schering’s pioneering typology where the author identifies solo concerto, concerto grosso and sinfonia-concerto in the Baroque, Bukofzer notes that the last term is mis- 1 M. Program Notes Symphony No. 3 – Aram Il'yich Khachaturian In November 1953, Aram Khachaturian acted on the encouraging signs of a cultural thaw following the death of Stalin six months earlier and wrote an article for the magazine Sovetskaya Muzika pleading for greater creative freedom. The way forward, he wrote, would have to be without the bureaucratic interference that had marred the creative efforts of previous years. How often in the past, he continues, 'have we listened to "monumental" works...that amounted to nothing but empty prattle by the composer, bolstered up by a contemporary theme announced in descriptive titles.' He was surely thinking of those countless odes to Stalin, Lenin and the Revolution, many of them subdivided into vividly worded sections; and in that respect Khachaturian had been no less guilty than most of his contemporaries.

  • Sound out Loud Ensemble New Arts Venture Challenge Grant Proposal
Sound Out Loud Ensemble New Arts Venture Challenge Grant Proposal April 5, 2016 Satoko Hayami DMA Candidate in Collaborative Piano, School of Music Executive Summary History and Makeup of Sound Out Loud Sound Out Loud (SOL) is a new music ensemble that recently launched in Madison. SOL is comprised of 7 forwardlooking, classically trained musicians, which includes 2 pianists, 1 percussionist, 1 flutist, 1 clarinetist, 1 violinist and 1 cellist. The group is lead by pianists Satoko Hayami and Kyle Johnson, a percussionist Garrett Mendelow. Mission SOL’s mission is to create a growing circle of musicians and audiences to share the excitement of the innovative, contemporary language of newly/recently composed classical music through a series of creative concerts and presentations primarily in the city of Madison. SOL also commissions works of young upcoming composers to enrich the repertoire of the genre. SOL believes that progressive new classical music expands the audience’s existing perspectives of music, and therefore further enhances their appreciation toward music in general. SOL also understands that new music’s relatable contemporary language helps the audience reconnect with conventional classical music, as inherited by contemporary classical music. Through commitment to contemporary classical music, SOL’s hope is to cultivate a sense of freedom toward classical music as well as toward other aspects of life, without the limitation of a conventional concept of music. Method SOL thrives to present highenergy performances of dynamic programs which are intellectually and emotionally inspirational for a wide array of audiences (including both classical music lovers and non classical music lovers).

The RECORDING Navigating, Coping & Cashing In Maze November 2013 Introduction Trying to get a handle on where the recording business is headed is a little like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. An Analysis of Honegger’s Cello Concerto (1929): A Return to Simplicity? Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2014, 58 pp., 3 tables, 28 examples, 33 references, 15 titles. Literature available on Honegger’s Cello Concerto suggests this concerto is often considered as a composition that resonates with Les Six traditions. While reflecting currents of Les Six, the Cello Concerto also features departures from Erik Satie’s and Jean Cocteau’s ideal for French composers to return to simplicity. Both characteristics of and departures from Les Six examined in this concerto include metric organization, thematic and rhythmic development, melodic wedge shapes, contrapuntal techniques, simplicity in orchestration, diatonicism, the use of humor, jazz influences, and other unique performance techniques.
