  • Indiana Jew: Josh Bernstein Is "Digging for the Truth" January 17, 2007
Indiana Jew: Josh Bernstein is "Digging for the Truth" January 17, 2007 Josh Bernstein is "Digging for the Truth." (PHOTO: Brendan Goeckel © Josh Bernstein) Josh Bernstein, the wide-brim hat-wearing, khaki-clad host of The History Channel’s hit television show “Digging for the Truth,” is chastising me. Skeptical, I am questioning the likelihood of a Manhattan-bred, Conservative Jew’s expertise in outdoor survival. “You know, at one point, we were all competent wilderness travelers,” he says good-naturedly. “I just reverted to an old-school Jewish lifestyle.” But these days his lifestyle is quite hectic. On this Friday afternoon in New York, Bernstein, 35, has some rare down time. Having recently completed the eight-month-long shoot of the DFT’s third season, he is gearing up for a book tour. In his new book, Digging for the Truth: One Man’s Epic Adventure Exploring the World’s Greatest Archaeological Mysteries, Bernstein goes behind-the-scenes, sharing “so much more than what you see during the 47 minutes of the show.” In it, he also dispenses practical adventure advice. Like for those inclined to build shelter in the snow, he provides instruction on “How to Build a Quinzhee.” And lest anyone think his globe-trotting job is all-glamour, Bernstein even writes about his lack of sleep, the itchy spider bites and the strange intestinal parasites he has picked up on location. So while his televised search for archeological adventure has brought comparisons to the movie hero “Indiana Jones,” his real-life story is more wandering Jew.

His father was film director Roy Rowland, his mother Ruth was a scriptwriter and the niece of Louis B. Mayer of MGM fame. Steve almost "naturally" began an acting career in the 50s, starring in over 35 TV shows like “Bonanza”, “Wanted Dead Or Alive” and a two year role in “The Legend of Wyatt Earp”. His first film appearance was at 11 year's old in MGM's "Boy's Ranch", singing Darling Clementine in the campfire scene. These were also the years when as a member of "Hollywood royalty" Steve was inspired to write monthly columns for the popular fan magazines, The View From Rowland’s Head being the most famous, as he mingled with the stars and starlets of the time : Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Natalie Wood, Tuesday Weld, Kathy Case, Carmen Phillips to name a few. And with his all-time friend Budd Albright, he hit the music scene with the group "West Coast Twist Kings", and with Earl Bostic he performed in the "Ringleaders". The lure of ‘the swinging sixties’ soon brought Steve to London where he produced records for the Fontana label.

  • An Interview with Josh Bernstein
Digging for the Truth From K. Kris Hirst, Your Guide to Archaeology. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! An Interview with Josh Bernstein The television program Digging for the Truth is a massively popular series broadcast by the History Channel, in which an intrepid fellow, Josh Bernstein, travels the world exploring archaeological sites and mysteries. In some archaeology circles, Digging for the Truth has raised some eyebrows, because of its glossy image, the emphasis on exciting frames of reference such as 'extreme archaeology', and the fact that the program attempts to solve complex archaeological problems in one or two hours. But the program I saw--the two hour premiere of Season 3, called "Atlantis: New Revelations"--was balanced and interesting, and put four of the current theories about the reality of Plato's legendary city under scientific scrutiny. Josh Bernstein is a New Yorker, with a BA in Anthropology from Cornell University. In addition, he has used much of his career as part of the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, where he has been CEO and President since 1997. His gig as host for Digging for the Truth began in 2004. In addition to being the host, Bernstein actively participates in the writing and producing of DFT, one of several for the History Channel's production team, JWM Productions. Recently, About.com reached Bernstein on location, where he took time out for an email interview. --- Digging for the Truth: Driven by Archaeology Mystery About.com: I know you're not an archaeologist by trade, so... What is that intrigues you about archaeology? What is it that makes you want to explore these topics? Josh Bernstein: I suppose I’ve always been fascinated by ancient cultures and people.

Steve Burke Chief Executive Officer NBCUniversal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 Jeff Shell Incoming Chief Executive Officer NBC Universal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 December 17th, 2019 Dear Mr. Burke and Mr. Shell, We write as members of the New York State Legislature to express our concern about allegations of a toxic workplace environment at NBCUniversal. There is growing evidence of a culture that silences victims of harassment and those who report inappropriate workplace behavior at NBC. NBCUniversal’s recent decision not to renew Gabrielle Union’s contract on America’s Got Talent is just the latest example of a concerning pattern of behavior on the part of NBC. Union was allegedly let go after raising concerns about racist jokes made on set and having been told repeatedly that her hairstyles were “too black.” These allegations represent unacceptable workplace behavior that no one should be subject to, let alone terminated for reporting. We are grateful that NBC has committed to Union that they will investigate her allegations and termination. However, NBC must be transparent about the findings of their investigation and take concrete steps to reform the toxic culture throughout the company. Union’s experience is only one example of the systemic silencing of victims of harassment and those who have spoken up at NBC. As reported extensively by Ronan Farrow and others, NBC ignored complaints of sexual misconduct against Matt Lauer and stymied Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein while at NBC. Farrow has also reported that at least seven women have signed non-disclosure agreements with the company after alleging sexual harassment, including individuals who made complaints about Lauer before November 2017.
