We are starting off at the Information Centre in the Postbridge car park, and as with all Dartmoor National Park Authority audio walks, we have divided this audio tour in to several sections, each one being a separate track for you to download on to your player. That way you can simply switch off when you are walking and then start playing the new track at the next point of interest, and I will give you full directions when to do this on the audio itself. You will also find that the name of each track include the grid reference of where you should be, so that you can follow the tour using a standard Ordnance Survey map, Explorer OL28 for Dartmoor, in this case, or you can download the accompanying map so you have a back up to the instructions on the audio. Today’s walk is a circular one, beginning and ending at the Information Centre, taking us out of Postbridge to the south and in to Bellever forest, and then Krap’s Ring, a large enclosure of hut rings and then onward to Lakehead Hill.

    Monthly water situation report Devon and Cornwall Area Summary – August 2021 Devon and Cornwall received 56 mm of rainfall in August, which is 66% of the Long Term Average rainfall (LTA) and ‘below normal’ for the time of year. Most catchments received ‘below normal’ rainfall this month. Monthly mean river flows were mostly ‘normal’ for the time of year. Soil moisture deficit increased. Groundwater levels remained healthy overall, and reservoir storage decreased as is normal for this time of year. Rainfall Devon and Cornwall received 56 mm of rainfall in August, which is 66% of the LTA rainfall and ‘below normal’ for the time of year. All rainfall catchments across the area had ‘below normal’ rainfall apart from the Otter, Sid, Axe and Lim catchment, which was ‘normal’ for the time of year. There were rainfall events around 5-9 August and 20-21 August. Rainfall maps and graph Rainfall catchments map Soil Moisture Deficit Soil moisture deficit (SMD) for Devon and Cornwall increased to 50 mm at the end of the month, close to the LTA of 52 mm. At the end of the month, soils were wetter than average for the time of year in the east of the area, and drier than average in the west of the area, reflecting the higher rainfall in the east. SMD graph and map River Flows Monthly mean flows were ‘normal’ for the time of year everywhere except the Otter at Dotton and the Kenwyn at Truro, where flows were ‘above normal’ for the time of year. Daily mean flows generally receded through the month, responding slightly to the rainfall around 7 August and 21 August.

Gifted to the YHA Archive by Roger Gaffney and transcribed by the YHA Archivist, August 2017 Note: these invaluable memoirs do throw up some discrepancies with dates. Where Allen’s dates differ from the archivist’s and others’ research, editorial alternatives are included in square brackets. Other additions are also included thus. Minor corrections of spelling and punctuation have been made without notification. The work seems to have been finished in 1977, as a spiral-bound typescript of 65 pages. There are a couple of afternotes into the 1980s. It is not known how widespread the issue was – only the single example in the YHA Archive has been seen to date. The thirty-three years work for the YHA D and C Region gave me a life full of interest and drive in the work of setting up of Youth Hostels in the West Country. I hope that my story relating in many cases to the humorous side of a secretary’s work will be of interest as to the pioneering days of YHA in the West Country. My comment on Hostels and in some cases the wardens of particular hostels will relate if the rotation as to the year in which the hostel was established. I realise that my work as secretary would not have succeeded without the help and expertise of a number of people who I will list hereunder, and to all of whom I tender a sincere THANK YOU.

After the village of Poundsgate take the second road on your right signed to Corndon, This turn is on a sharp left hand bend just after a sign with black and white chevrons to show the corner. Continue down this lane for about ½ mile, go straight across the crossroads, signed to Bellever, Broadaford and Cator. After about 1 mile, when you are back on open moorland, take the unmarked lane on your right, (this is after you have passed Corndon Ford Farm on your left). At the bottom of the hill you pass a farm on your left and then after crossing the bridge you will find the drive to East Shallowford on your left, just as you start to climb the hill. From Tavistock direction on the B3357 pass Princetown and just past the Hotel at Two Bridges turn left on to the B3212 signed to Postbridge and Moretonhampsted. After a couple of miles take the first road on your right, it is immediately at the end of Bellever Forest which has been on your right, and is just before the village of Postbridge.
