    GUIDE 1 Welcome to the 2020 NOPS Kit Kat Tour Torbay is a large bay on Devon’s south coast. Overlooking its clear blue waters from their vantage points along the bay are three towns: Paignton, Torquay and Brixham. The bays ancient flood plain ends where it meets the steep hills of the South Hams. These hills act as suntrap, allowing the bay to luxuriate in its own warm microclimate. It is the bays golden sands and rare propensity for fine weather that has led to the bay and its seaside towns being named the English Riviera. Dartmoor National Park is a wild place with open moorlands and deep river valleys, a rich history and rare wildlife, making is a unique place and a great contrast to Torbay in terms of photographic subjects. The locations listed in the guide have been selected as popular areas to photograph. I have tried to be accurate with the postcodes but as many locations are rural, they are an approximation. They are not intended as an itinerary but as a starting point for a trigger-happy weekend. All the locations are within an hour or so drive from the hotel. Some locations are run by the National Trust or English Heritage. It would be worth being members or going with a member so that the weekend can be enjoyed to the full. Prices listed are correct at time of publication, concession prices are in brackets. Please take care and be respectful of the landscape around you. If you intend climbing or doing any other dangerous activities, please go in pairs (at least).

We are starting off at the Information Centre in the Postbridge car park, and as with all Dartmoor National Park Authority audio walks, we have divided this audio tour in to several sections, each one being a separate track for you to download on to your player. That way you can simply switch off when you are walking and then start playing the new track at the next point of interest, and I will give you full directions when to do this on the audio itself. You will also find that the name of each track include the grid reference of where you should be, so that you can follow the tour using a standard Ordnance Survey map, Explorer OL28 for Dartmoor, in this case, or you can download the accompanying map so you have a back up to the instructions on the audio. Today’s walk is a circular one, beginning and ending at the Information Centre, taking us out of Postbridge to the south and in to Bellever forest, and then Krap’s Ring, a large enclosure of hut rings and then onward to Lakehead Hill.

The Trust met most of its strategic objectives for the year, exceeding targets for habitat creation and species protection, and inspiring thousands of people to connect with and act for wildlife. Our work as part of the Wildlife Trust movement (TWTs) has progressed significant legal protections for the natural environment – such as securing new Marine Conservation Zones and lobbying for a robust Environment Act - and we have worked closely with a range of partners, local communities, individual supporters and other stakeholders to drive local improvements for wildlife and to put the need to protect and restore our precious natural environment high on the public and political agenda. Key Achievements for the year against our Aims and Objectives are detailed in section 2 of the Trustees’ Annual Report and show the enormous range and depth of work we are doing, together, to protect Devon’s wildlife.     Monthly water situation report Devon and Cornwall Area Summary – August 2021 Devon and Cornwall received 56 mm of rainfall in August, which is 66% of the Long Term Average rainfall (LTA) and ‘below normal’ for the time of year. Most catchments received ‘below normal’ rainfall this month. Monthly mean river flows were mostly ‘normal’ for the time of year. Soil moisture deficit increased. Groundwater levels remained healthy overall, and reservoir storage decreased as is normal for this time of year. Rainfall Devon and Cornwall received 56 mm of rainfall in August, which is 66% of the LTA rainfall and ‘below normal’ for the time of year. All rainfall catchments across the area had ‘below normal’ rainfall apart from the Otter, Sid, Axe and Lim catchment, which was ‘normal’ for the time of year. There were rainfall events around 5-9 August and 20-21 August. Rainfall maps and graph Rainfall catchments map Soil Moisture Deficit Soil moisture deficit (SMD) for Devon and Cornwall increased to 50 mm at the end of the month, close to the LTA of 52 mm. At the end of the month, soils were wetter than average for the time of year in the east of the area, and drier than average in the west of the area, reflecting the higher rainfall in the east. SMD graph and map River Flows Monthly mean flows were ‘normal’ for the time of year everywhere except the Otter at Dotton and the Kenwyn at Truro, where flows were ‘above normal’ for the time of year. Daily mean flows generally receded through the month, responding slightly to the rainfall around 7 August and 21 August.
