Landmarks Preservation Commission March 23, 2010, Designation List 427 LP-2387 THE BRILL BUILDING, 1619 Broadway (aka 1613-23 Broadway, 207-213 West 49th Street), Manhattan Built 1930-31; architect, Victor A. Bark, Jr. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1021, Lot 19 On October 27, 2009 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Brill Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Three people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of the owner, New York State Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried, and the Historic Districts Council. There were no speakers in opposition to designation.1 Summary Since its construction in 1930-31, the 11-story Brill Building has been synonymous with American music – from the last days of Tin Pan Alley to the emergence of rock and roll. Occupying the northwest corner of Broadway and West 49th Street, it was commissioned by real estate developer Abraham Lefcourt who briefly planned to erect the world’s tallest structure on the site, which was leased from the Brill Brothers, owners of a men’s clothing store. When Lefcourt failed to meet the terms of their agreement, the Brills foreclosed on the property and the name of the nearly-complete structure was changed from the Alan E. Lefcourt Building to the, arguably more melodious sounding, Brill Building. Designed in the Art Deco style by architect Victor A. Bark, Jr., the white brick elevations feature handsome terra-cotta reliefs, as well as two niches that prominently display stone and brass portrait busts that most likely portray the developer’s son, Alan, who died as the building was being planned.

Applications and Implications. 1, Volume 1, Robin Ward, Addison Wesley Higher Education, 1984, 020115515X, 9780201155150, . DOWNLOAD http://bit.ly/1j0l1Bk , , , , . Succulent selection of proto-Philly girls, country queens, Italian-American princesses, doo wop divas, swinging soul sisters, session stalwarts and Brill Building babes, from 1955 to the Beatles invasion of 1964. 28 tracks with The Exciters, Betty Everett, Earl Jean, Toni Fisher, The Essex, Janie Grant, The Hearts, The Shirelles, and many others. Leave it to one of England's premier re-issue labels to put together a compilation that rivals Rhino's excellent "The Girl Groups" series. While a few of these songs fall outside the strict definition of girl groups (1961-1965), this is a super collection and at 28 tracks you won't find a more generous single disc compilation. There are seven songs that overlap with the Rhino series, but that's a minor complaint. Where Rhino gave you the Angels' oft-anthologized "My Boyfriend's Back," here you get their earlier 1961 hit "'Til." While the Rhino series included three Shirelles' songs, it did not include their classic "Dedicated to the One I Love" found here. Ace, England's premier reissue label blasts into the girl group compilation genre with this first in a series. "Popsicles and Icicles" gathers up a massive 28 tracks of girl- and girl-oriented group tunes from the pre-British invasion era. While including many familiar hits to keep the casual collector humming along, the wealth of this collection is also found in the number of seldom-found gems. "I'm Into Something Good", the pre-Herman Hermits Earl Jean domestic version, Janie Grant's "Triangle", Toni Fisher's "West Of The Wall" and Reparata and the Delrons' "Whenever A Teenager Cries" in stereo(!) give this collection a variety not found in the many other repetitive girl group compilations floating around.

IT WILL STAND: The music of our youth © Frank Eberling 12.0 011414 1 IT WILL STAND “It swept this whole wide land, Sinkin' deep in the heart of man. Yes, Rock & Roll forever will stand.” IT WILL STAND by The Showmen (1961, 1964) If you were to walk the almost-empty hallways of Clarkstown High School tomorrow morning and listen very carefully, ignoring the slamming of a locker door over on the next corridor, or the sound of Mr. Buerkett's mop pushing a pile of sweeping compound down the glistening floors, or a girl's laughter after she drops her books while bending over a drinking fountain, you might hear something familiar. If you are lucky enough to hear it, you'll never forget it. My family was filled with musicians. My parents, older sister, Bonnie, and younger brother, Ray, could all play at least two instruments, with an old upright piano being the common core. I grew up listening to live piano music played by four family members, all day long. I took piano lessons myself for a few months but they didn't take me. But I loved the music. So it probably comes as no surprise that the first Rock & Roll record I ever bought was by a piano player. It was I'M WALKIN', by Fats Domino. I still have the 78rpm record I bought in February of 1957. (78rpm PHOTO HERE if I can find it by Friday). Some people believe the old conventional wisdom that Rock & Roll was invented in 1956 and the term was coined by Alan Freed.
