Trainer Noel Daley may be old school in terms of the sports’ conditioners. In speaking with him last week about his returning 3-year-old trotting filly Anoka Hanover’s schedule, Daley said, “I’m going to qualify her at Harrah’s Philadelphia. I’m not sending her to The Meadowlands to qualify in 1:51-1:52. That’s just crazy.” While some of the larger stables appear more eager to send their returning stars to The Meadowlands to get closer to race speed, Daley goes back to a time when qualifiers required passing a timed test that assured the Judges and the racing public that the horse could go fast enough in a pari-mutuel race. The message I got from Daley was not whether he believed his horse could go fast enough, but the opinion that when money wasn’t on the line, “What’s the point?” While Daley was concerned about the longevity of his horse and not putting too many hard miles in when Vicki Wright Anoka Hanover and trainer Noel Daley are preparing for a run at the money wasn’t riding, it raised the overall question as to in 2021. what many trainers are actually doing in pari-mutuel races these days. A solid group of 3-year-olds will be in action this weekend at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono with the $40,000 finals for the Bobby Weiss Series for male pacers and male trotters featured on Saturday after- noon and Sunday evening, respectively. Driver Josert Fonseca couldn’t be happier with the likely favorite for Saturday’s Weiss final, the $800,000 yearling known as One Eight Hundred “I trained him this morning (Wednesday),” Fonseca said. “I was very happy with the way he finished.” For Fonseca the job of handling the expensive year- ling this year has been a treat. Cast off in some ways after just one victory in five starts as a juvenile, One Eight Hundred needed some time off to get his act together. “He got a bit grabby at The Red Mile last year,” said Fonseca, obviously referring to a performance in the Bluegrass that saw an out of control colt click off first- half fractions of 26 and 52 4/5 before coming to a near walk in the last eighth of a mile.
