Silent Auction Brochure A FUNDRAISING EVENING FOR THE SPORTS HUB EQUIPMENT CAMPAIGN SILENT AUCTION BROCHURE SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER 2019 Welcome From Sir Peter Wall, Chairman of the Gordon Foundation I am delighted to welcome you to this Gordon’s Gastronomic Dinner to raise funds to equip our new Sports Hall and All-Weather Pitch. Sport is an excellent paradigm for life, so it forms an important component of a Gordon’s education. It develops physical fitness, mental resilience, teamwork and overall wellbeing; sport also teaches us how to bounce back from failure and be magnanimous in victory. Our superb new accommodation will provide dedicated year-round facilities, and will enable us to expand our sporting repertoire. This evening is a chance to enjoy the company of all sections of the Gordon Community as well as fine food and entertainment. Please be generous in your support for the cause, through the raffle and auctions, to ensure that we can provide sporting opportunities that will develop fit, competitive and well-rounded Gordonians. Have a tremendous evening and sincere thanks for your support! We Are Supporting From September 2020 our new sports hall, accommodating four badminton courts along with changing rooms, a first aid room and café, will provide our students with dedicated indoor sports facilities for year-round use as well as the opportunity to play a wider range of new sports including badminton, indoor football, basketball, indoor cricket, handball volleyball and other recreational activities. The floodlit all- weather pitch will provide our football and rugby players with training facilities throughout the year, whatever the weather. These enhanced facilities will provide ample space for spectators and also allow Gordon’s to host more competitive events. As well as benefiting the students and staff at Gordon's, the sports facilities will be available to hire for sports groups within the local community Trustees of The Gordon Foundation agreed to fund the capital cost of these new sports facilities through long-term loans. Now we are fundraising to purchase the new equipment required to ensure that Gordon’s students have the very best opportunities to use these transforming new sports facilities. The equipment wish list ranges from the outdoor rugby posts, indoor electronic basketball goals and indoor cricket nets to table tennis tables, badminton nets and volleyballs. We have also included the 40 new trees and landscaped planting required! The full list can be found at www.gordons.school/gordonssportshub. Our fundraising target is £150k of which about one-third has so far been raised. This evening provides a fantastic opportunity for us to make a significant difference to our fundraising total and enable Gordon’s students to develop healthy and resilient lives. Recognising the importance of physical activity in developing healthy lives we want to provide every opportunity for our students to be physically active and to make sport at Gordon's accessible to all. Message From Hannah Russell MBE 2 x Paralympic Champion; Word Record Holder; 6 X World/European Champion and Gordonian My five years spent at Gordon's were some of my best years. I am so grateful for all the opportunities the school provided me, helping me grow into the young women I am today. The pursuit of excellence at both Gordon's and my own personal goal worked really well together and having like-minded people at the school allowed me to fulfil my ambitions and go on to win multiple gold medals at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The new plans for the development of facilities will add to the opportunities and aspirations of the school, the students, and all who aspire for future success. I was fortunate to benefit from the environment at Gordon’s and every effort, commitment, and pledge will go towards changing someone’s life. Tonight’s Speaker - David Nash It’s a privilege to have a former Sportsman, a now successful businessman and one of the good guys in our midst this evening. Having played 257 matches for Middlesex as a professional cricketer, David Nash turned his attention to helping those less fortunate in life. During his testimonial year, he became inspired by working with Shooting Star Chase, successfully raising an incredible £20,000 for the leading children’s hospice charity. With a real flair for fundraising in 2010, he decided to set up D&G Group with his brother, Glen. Once operating out of the spare room of his Sunbury family home, he desired to help brands and charities raise funds through world-class events and sporting functions, using his strong network to help those in need. Now backed by a team of 40, alongside sporting heroes Lewis Moody MBE and Graham Gooch OBE as active Ambassadors, Nashy (as he’s better known) has gone on to raise over £20 million for charities up and down the country. D&G Group have facilitated the silent auction this evening, that we’ve love you all to get involved with. The type of man you hear before you see, with time for anyone; do grab him for a chat throughout the evening, especially if you know anyone in need of support. Whether it be in Events & Production, Fundraising, Hospitality & Lifestyle, Recruitment or Consultation, D&G Group are always interested in giving back to good causes. • Celebrity Chefs As Brand and Their Cookbooks As Marketing
Celebrity Chefs as brand and their cookbooks as marketing communications This paper discusses how consumers understand and interpret celebrity chefs as brands and utilise the cookbooks as marketing communications of the benefits and values of the brand. It explores the literature around the concept of celebrity, identifying it as something which is consciously created with commercial intent to such an extent that to suggest celebrities become brands is not hyperbole (Turner, 2004). It discusses the celebrity chef: how they are created and their identity as marketing objects (Byrne et al, 2003). It discusses common constructions of the meaning of cookbooks as historical and cultural artefacts and as merchandise sold on the strength of their associated celebrity’s brand values (Brownlee & Hewer, 2007). The paper then discusses its findings against two research objectives: first to explore the meaning of celebrity chefs for consumers and second to suggest a mechanism of how this meaning is created. Using narrative analysis of qualitative interviews this paper suggests, that consumers understand and consume the celebrity chef brand in a more active and engaged way than traditional consumer goods brands can achieve. It also suggests, as a development from tradition views of cookbooks, that those written by the celebrity chef brands are acting as marketing communications for their brand values. Defining Celebrity Celebrity is much written about by social theorists (Marshall, 1997; Monaco, 1978) and as such there are many taxonomies of celebrity which Turner (2004) and discusses at some length in his work Most interesting for this work is the concept of the Star (Monaco, 1978), fame is achieved when their public persona eclipses their professional profile in the ways of Elizabeth Hurley or Paris Hilton.

Introduction Celebrity is much written about by social theorists (McNamara, 2009; Ferri, 2010; Lawler, 2010) and as such there are many taxonomies of celebrity, which Turner (2010) discusses at length. The concept that celebrity is a ‘cultural formation that has a social function’ (Turner, 2010:11), and the contemporary significance of celebrity itself remains a key topic for debate (Couldry and Markham, 2007). Celebrities are considered as role models for millions of people, especially younger citizens (Couldry and Markham, 2007), who are the focus of this study. Pringle (2004:3) suggests that ‘celebrity sells’, and outlines the extent to which society becomes influenced by these figures due to their prevalence in everyday life. Becoming well-known public figures, where they have adversaries as well as fans (Henderson, 2011) celebrities have attracted significant literature, which is split on their benefit and detriment to society (Couldry and Markham, 2007).

The move to Upton Park came about when, in 1904, Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company owner Arnold Hills was having financial issues. Hills was unwilling to re-negotiate a deal for the club to remain at Memorial Grounds, meaning the Hammers needed to find a new place to call home. Upton Park was settled upon, where the club would play its football from the 1904/05 season right up until 2016. The stadium, which was originally named The Castle, was built next to and in the grounds of Green Street House. The pitch was laid on an area that had previously been used to grow cabbages and potatoes. The stadium originally consisted of a small West Stand, a covered terrace backing on to Priory Road and changing rooms placed in the north- west corner between the West Stand and North Bank. West Ham’s first game at Upton Park came on Thursday, 1 September 1904, when they beat long-standing rivals 15 THE BOLEYN’S Farewell Millwall 3-0 in front of 10,000 fans.
