Praesenti volumine periodum sat diffi­ cilem aggressi sumus, quae una ex parte documentis scriptis, ex altera vero eventibus momentosis abundat. Periodo hac Ecclesia Unita in terris Ucrai- nae et Bielarusjae testimonia praebuit catholicitatis et fidelitatis. Praesenti volumine Lectori sat copiosam messem documentorum ob­ tulimus, ut, aliis quamplurimis notitiis bio et bibliographicis adhibitis, sibi iudicium iustum et aequum de eventibus et personis efformet. Nihil proinde subtacuimus, nihil pratermisimus, nulli favimus parti, ut veritas historica et aequitas ac iustitia eo clarius triumphet. Documenta nostra ea sane aetate in lucem prodeunt, qua mens et opera oecumenica magis magisque in orbe Christiano diffunduntur. Proinde no­ strum etiam laborem, hoc eodem spiritu ducti, Christianis ad pacem et unitatem anhelantibus offerimus, quae nisi veritati et humilitati innitetur, duratura esse non potest. Dissensiones et contentiones, quae inter Christianos vigent, non ex sola theologia, sed potius ex historia proveniunt semperque novas sumunt vires et vigorem. Rerum historicarum studiosis proinde ius est et obligatio, ut historia melius cognoscatur et rectius explicetur, ut charitati et Christianae humilitati via paretur ac tandem aliquando etiam veritas clarius pateat. Huic fini in nostra Ecclesia assequendo iam inde a tribus lustris insudamus. Dum hodie ipsa natura ecclesiasticae unitatis consideratur, praesens vo­ lumen cuiusdam momenti esse censemus, quo documenta praebeantur de ipso cardine Unionis Berestensis seu de Metropolita Kioviensi eo precise tempore, quo fratres a nobis seiuncti acrius contendere ceperunt, saeculo XVIII exeunte. Hac luce collustrati, hoc volumen fidenter offerimus. Dum finem praesenti editioni imponimus, ecce CCCL vertitur anniver­ saria dies, ex quo praesentis Collectionis documentorum auctores, Basilia- norum nempe sodales recolent memoriam primi Capituli Generatis in Me- tropolia Kioviensi celebrati, quo in unum coaluit corpus et opus—mens, vo­ luntas et opera plurium. Ab anno nempe 1617 incipit historia Ordinis Basi- liani in Metropolia Kioviensi, ex quo « Josephus Velamin, pluribus eiusdem Ordinis monasteriis, quae antea segregata degebant, ad Unionem redactis, unam ex eis Monachorum Congregationem efformavit, quam de nomine su- pradicti monasterii Congregationem SS. Trinitatis Unitorum nuncupavit » (Benedictus XIV, Inter plures, an. 1744), unde horum monachorum « Or- dine vigente, Ruthenorum viguit Ecclesia » (Leo XIII, Singulare praesidium, an. 1882). Hac eadem die XX Iulii anno 1617, gratia Spiritus Sancti invocata, duce Josepho Velamin Rutskyj, Metropolita Kioviensi totiusque Russiae, prae- eunte Sancto Josaphat, Archimandrita Viìnensi, omnes unanimiter statuerunt in unum Corpus monasticum unamque Congregationem congregari, unde vigere cepit Ordo viguitque Ecclesia Unita. Hanc diem in memoriam revocando, tercentesimaquinquagesima vice filii opus patrum confirmant et affirmant. Romae, die 20 mensis Iulii 1967 In festo S. Eliae prophetae. « Analectorum OSBM » Redactio Inde ab anno 1752 activitas Feliciani Philippi Wolodkovycz limites epar- chiae Chelmensis, sibi inde ab anno 1731 commissae, transgressa est, ut toti Ecclesiae Unitae bono et emolumento sit, auxilia praebendo senio la­ boribusque Fracto Metropolitae Floriano Hrebnyckyj (1748-1762). A die 18 Aprilis 1762 Felicianus Wolodkovycz in sede metropolitana Kioviensi succesit, quam usque ad diem 12 Februarii 1778, difficillimis sane temporibus, rexit et gubernavit, tum ipse tum Coadiutorum suorum opera adhibita. Totam hanc periodum plus quam 25 annorum in unam seriem colligere pro posse statuimus, quam duobus voluminibus expedire necesse est, ob magnam documentorum molem et numerum. Proinde volumen V et VI Epistolarum Metropolitarum Kioviensium Ca­ tholicorum Feliciano Wolodkovycz dicavimus. Volumine primo seu in parte prima inveniuntur documenta Wolodkovycz, praesertim annis 1752-1772 data. Huic seriei documenta quaedam biographica praemisimus, simul cum brevi biographia. Secundo volumine seu parte altera epistolarum Feiiciani Wolodkovycz omnia alia comprehendi documenta, inde ab anno 1773 usque ad eius obitum, mense Februario 1778, adnexo Indice nominum et rerum generali omnium documentorum, quae duobus voluminibus constant. Dum una ex parte opportunum non Fuit visum ut omnia documenta uno eodemque libro comprehendatur, ex altera vero utilius videbatur, ut saltem uno eodemque Indice omnia connexa et adnexa Lectori prostarent. Quod modum methodumque editionis spectat, nihil videtur necessarium, praeter ea quae iam in aliis voluminibus ad abundantiam dicti sumus. Quoad adnotationes utile est ut notemus, nos tantummodo res omnino necessarias adnotasse; de aliis quamplurimis videant rerum historicarum studiosi viri. De ipsis vero documentis dicendum manent sequentia: a) agitur hic tantummodo de documentis Romae asservatis, aliis omnibus exclusis; b) ex variis documentis quae res Metropoliae et Metropolitae Kioviensis tunc temporis spectant, solum ea selegimus, quae ab ipso Metropolita exarata vel subscripta inventa sunt, aliis ad alia volumina remissis, praesertim varias supplicationes nomine eius Sedi Apostolicae datas (cFr. Supplica­ tiones Ecclesiae Unitae, voi. Ili et IV); c) documenta Wolodkoviciana prop­ ter characterem negotiorum in variis Archivis dispersa sunt quaerenda, nec Facile haberi possunt: si quae nostram attentionem aufugerunt, suo tempore in Epistolis Episcoporum quaerenda sunt; d) cum de prima edi­ tione harum epistolarum agitur, nobis omnino conscii sumus, nos in nostra Collectione omnino perFecti esse non valemus nec possumus. His praemissis nunc ad ipsa documenta Lectorem remittimus, nihil sibi, multum Ecclesiae, et omnia veritati quaerendo. Brevis biographia Felicianus Philippus Wolodkovycz natus est die 6 Junii 1697 in Li- thuania, in dioecesi Vilnensi, parentibus nobilibus: Dominico et Theresia, sanguine cum opulentissima et potentissima familia lithuana Radziwill iuncta. Studiis tunc temporis familiis nobilium hominum suetis absolutis, ingressus est Ordinem Basilianorum Provinciae SS. Trinitatis Lithuanae, et iuvenis 24 annorum missus est, novitiatu absoluto, Brunsbergam ad studia ecclesiastica in Pontificio Collegio peragenda. Ingressus est Collegium Bruns- bergense die 6 Septembris anno 1722, praescriptum vero iuramentum alumni pontiFicii emisit die 14 Martii 1723. Sed duobus annis post ingressum Col­ legium absolutis, « expeditus est in Provinciam suam ob aegram valetu­ dinem, a qua iudicio medicorum liberari non poterat ob male faventem auram », ut referunt Chronica Collegii Brunsbergensis, et ideo iam die 25 Octobris 1724 in patriam est reversus, iuvenis 26 annorum. In patriam reversus et ordinibus maioribus susceptis ad Collegium Basilianorum Volodimirense missus est, ubi mox Vicarium monasterii et Collegii egit, donec post breve tempus translatus est Lublinum, in Superio­ rem huius residentiae religiosae in eparchia Chelmensi sitae; sed iam anno 1730 promotionem accepit in Archimandritam Dubnensem Dermanensem et S. Crucis in Volhinia, a Metropolita Kioviensi benedictus.     UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Body Satyrical: Satire and the Corpus Mysticum during Crises of Fragmentation in Late Medieval and Early Modern France A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies by Christopher Martin Flood 2013 © Copyright by Christopher Martin Flood 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Body Satyrical: Satire and the Corpus Mysticum during Crises of Fragmentation in Medieval and Early Modern France by Christopher Martin Flood Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Jean-Claude Carron, Chair The later Middle Ages and early modern period in France were marked by divisive conflicts (i.e. the Western Schism, the Hundred Years’ War, and the Protestant Reformation) that threatened the stability and unity of two powerful yet seemingly fragile social entities, Christendom and the kingdom of France. The anxiety engendered by these crises was heightened by the implicit violence of a looming fragmentation of those entities that, perceived through the lens of the Pauline corporeal metaphor, were imagined as corpora mystica (mystical bodies). Despite the gravity of these crises of fragmentation, ii each met with a somewhat unexpected and, at times, prolific response in the form of satirical literature. Since that time, these satirical works have been reductively catalogued under the unwieldy genre of traditional satire and read superficially as mere vituperation or ridiculing didacticism. However, when studied against the background of sixteenth- century theories of satire and the corporeal metaphor, a previously unnoticed element of these works emerges that sets them apart from traditional satire and provides an original insight into the culture of the time.

    Margarita Decretalium The Margarita Decretalium ("Pearls of the Decretals") is the index that appears at the end of the Decretales Gregorii IX , or Liber Extra , volume 2 of the three-volume Corpus Juris Canonici , online at http://digidev.library.ucla.edu/canonlaw/ It is an index to the text of the decretals themselves, in contrast to the Materiae Singulares at the beginning of the volume, which is an index to the Ordinary Gloss (q.v.). The Margarita index seems to have been assembled during the late thirteenth century, some time before the appearance of the Liber Sextus in 1298. Most of the references to the legislation of Innocent IV (1243-54) and Gregory X (1272-76) are to their Novellae, even when specifying decretals that were incorporated into the Sext (their position in the Sext is indicated in the expanded edition of the Margarita below). Occasionally one does see a reference to the Sext (for instance in the entry, "Accusatio contra inopem," referring to Innocent IV's decretal Frequens from the Second Council of Lyons, Sext 2.5.1, but this is undoubtedly the work of later editors). Each entry in the original index gives only the title and chapter incipit of the relevant decretal, in addition to the column number; in the edited index below, the book, title, and chapter numbers have been added.     The Historical Background of the Church Conflict in Great Moravia* ZDENÈK R. DITTRICH The short but eventful and quite tragic history of the former Slavic church province on the Danube begun with the Christianization of the Slavic people of that region. Therefore, it is desirable to deal first with the question under which circumstances, when, and by whom this religious — and, in a broader sense — sociocultural adaptation-process of the origi- nally purely pagan people was induced. One must start with the fact that the general conditions of Christianization were not always the same. The Slavic immigrants who had settled the former Roman provinces, Noricum and Pannonia, in the course of their migration had more oppor- tunities to absorb the less diffuse elements of the Christian religion, mentality, and way of life than the Slavs living outside the Danube basin. Nevertheless, at least as far as Great Moravia was concerned, there was only a difference in extent. From recent excavations in the neighborhood of the Moravian Stare Mesto and elsewhere, one can draw the conclusion that the Roman influence north of the Danube, as well as subsequent cultural and commercial relationships of this region with the Mediter- ranean-Adriatic area, were quite extensive, much stronger than had been considered possible by previous research.1 The fact that contact with the Christian Romanic or Romanized population of the Danube province and Christendom south of the Alps had an effect also on religious matters can be seen from the fact that the Christian terminology of West and South Slavic languages contains a number of words borrowed from Romance languages which had ap- parently already been taken over at the beginning of the cultural con- frontation.
