Muslims in South India maintain an exceptional legacy of love, cooperation, and understanding with the people of other religions and ideologies, the culture which they inherited from their forefathers. One of the major reasons for this religious coexistence is that Muslims rely on Sunnah, i.e. traditions and life incidents of Prophet (s.a.w.), along with the dicta of the Quran, as a reference for their approach and culture with others. Besides, the schol- ars and preachers repeatedly quote the stories of Prophet which portray the respect and consid- eration for prayers and culture of people other religions. As a result, Muslims in Kerala largely organize interfaith programs, respect others’ religious beliefs and cooperate with them in a way that does not contradict with fundamental teachings of Islam. Also, this study focused on the Islamic history of India and its approaches with narrating famous historians' understanding of Indian. The major output of this approach is that all religions have respectful space in south India, and it leaves productive impacts in the hearts of youth in a remarkable way.

    Islam, Law and Identity The essays brought together in Islam, Law and Identity are the product of a series of interdisciplinary workshops that brought together scholars from a plethora of countries. Funded by the British Academy the workshops convened over a period of two years in London, Cairo and Izmir. PROOFSThe workshops and the ensuing papers focus on recent debates about the nature of sacred and secular law and most engage case studies from specific countries including Egypt, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Pakistan and the UK. Islam, Law and Identity also addresses broader and over-arching concerns about relationships between religion, human rights, law and modernity. Drawing on a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches, the collection presents law as central to the complex ways in which different Muslim communities and institutions create and re-create their identities around inherently ambiguous symbols of faith. From their different perspectives, the essays argue that there is no essential conflict between secular law and Shari’a, but various different articulations of the sacred and the secular. Islam, Law and Identity explores a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of the tensions that animate such terms as Shari’a law, modernity and secularization. Abstract: Over the course of nearly 20 centuries, millions of East Africans crossed the Indian Ocean and its several seas and adjoining bodies of water in their journey to distant lands, from Arabia and Iraq to India and Sri Lanka. Called Kaffir, Siddi, Habshi, or Zanji, these men, women and children from Sudan in the north to Mozambique in the south Africanized the Indian Ocean world and helped shape the societies they entered and made their own. Free or enslaved, soldiers, servants, sailors, merchants, mystics, musicians, commanders, nurses, or founders of dynasties, they contributed their cultures, talents, skills and labor to their new world, as millions of their descendants continue to do. Yet, their heroic odyssey remains little known.
