Manhattan School for Children (MSC) Middle School Class of 2016 —High School Placements
Note: In New York City, students in 8th Grade have three possible pathways for admissions to public high schools, and they may apply to schools in one, two or three of the categories described here:
(1) The primary “Academic (screened or unscreened)” high schools (each of which has its own criteria for selection, in additions to grades, state test scores and attendance records); Through a DOE-matching algorithm, every student can only be accepted to only ONE school in this category, even if they apply to up to a dozen schools in this category.
(2) The 9 so-called “Specialized High Schools” (for which the sole admissions criteria is the student’s score on the citywide SHSAT entrance exam that is offered in Fall of 8th Grade (Approximately 30,000 NYC students take the SHSAT exam each year, and roughly 8,000 of those students gain admission to one of the Specialized High Schools on their ranked list; once all of the 9th Grade seats in this Specialized High Schools have been filled, no more students can be admitted, no matter what SHSAT score they got..
(3) The “Performing Arts” schools (which require auditions or the submission of an arts-based portfolio in addition to grades, state test scores and attendance records; Again, students can only be accepted to ONE Performing Arts school, even if they apply to several.
In this list of MSC’s Class of 2016 graduates, the appearance of multiple schools on any one line indicates that that MSC student was accepted to more than one high school (he/she ultimately chose which one to attend). Some students also applied to a private or parochial schools.
