WILSONS >COUNT= DOWN TO BREEDERS= CUP TRAVERS UNDERCARD by Jessica Martini ECLIPSES MAIN EVENT When Count Alexander (Scat Daddy) coasted home to an impressive debut victory (video) sprinting six furlongs over the turf at Woodbine Sunday, it was the perfect first step in a plan developed by longtime horseman Mike Lightner on behalf of owners Holly and David Wilson. AMike Lightner has been buying yearlings for us--we usually buy between five and 10 a year--and he takes them to Florida and breaks them and trains them and lets them grow up there,@ said David Wilson. AIf it looks like they are going to be quality individuals, then we ship them to the West Coast. He thought this one was going to be good on the grass, so he said, >My daughter [trainer Mary Lightner] is going up to Toronto, so let=s run him up there in a maiden special weight. Three weeks after that, there is a Win and You=re In race [Sept. 17 GII Summer S.] for the Breeders= Cup. Mike=s plan was to ship him to Toronto, run in this race and hope he did well and then look for that Win Charles & Susan Chu lead Drefong into winner=s circle | S Andrew and You=re in in three weeks.@ Click to cont. to p5

Three other undercard Grade I stakes at Saratoga Race Course Saturday unfolded in tactically interesting fashion, narrowly decided in photo-finish increments of a head, neck, and half a length. But the GI Travers S. itself? The wire-to-wire win by West Coast (Flatter) seemed a touch underwhelming considering the California-based Bob Baffert trainee was allowed to establish a reasonable early pace and none of the colts perceived as top threats (including all three winners of this year=s Triple Crown races) mounted credible challenges to either soften up West Coast early or mow him down late with stout closing kicks. So the aftermath of the biggest day of the meet at the Spa (second-highest all-sources betting handle in Travers Day history) resonates as an afternoon when the supporting cast outshined the main attraction. And while the status of several divisional leaders solidified over the weekend, the sophomore rankings remain as wobbly as they have been for the past six months, with no 3-year-old colt firmly latching onto prolonged kingpin status at any time in 2017. Travers Undercard Eclipses Main Event Yet the inevitable comparisons to stablemate Arrogate should stop beyond establishing that both colts were late-developing (cont. from p1) Baffert 3-year-olds who shipped East to wire the Travers in With only two graded two-turn stakes for 3-year-olds consecutive seasons under jockey Mike Smith. remaining on the national calendar (the GI Pennsylvania Derby Yes, West Coast=s win on Saturday in 2:01.19 was the and the GIII Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 23 and 24, respectively) second-fastest Travers in the last 25 years, behind only and the prospect of facing older horses looming with the Arrogate=s track-record 1:59.36 in 2016. Drefong Dominates The truest semblance of outright dominance Saturday at Saratoga was provided by the Baffert/Smith powerhouse sprinter Drefong in the GI Forego S. Making his second start off an extended layoff, the 2016 champ left little doubt that he remains the continent=s top six- and seven-furlong specialist after ripping straight to the front and swatting away the overmatched competition through lively fractions while geared down late and clear by four lengths at the wire. When judging just how far the chasm is from Drefong back to the rest of the North American sprinters, consider that the three most recent important sprint stakes this summer all have asterisks attached to them because of which horses didn=t West Coast | Sarah Andrew perform in those races. TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 10 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • AUGUST 28, 2017

The July 29 GI Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar, won by Ransom the Moon (Malibu Moon), was the race in which champion Drefong ducked in at the gap and unseated his rider, vastly changing the complexion of that race. The same-day GI Vanderbilt H. at Saratoga, won by El Deal (Munnings), similarly had its pace scenario altered about an hour before the race when morning-line favorite A. P. Indian (Indian Charlie) scratched with a career-ending ankle injury, leaving El Deal as the lone speed. And this past Saturday=s GII Pat O=Brien S. at Del Mar, won by Giant Expectations (Frost Giant), also lost its morning-line favorite--this time the day before the race, when Danzing Candy (Twirling Candy) was retired with a career-ending sesamoid fracture. The bottom line? Drefong is rested and dangerous at a time when the sprint division is subtracting A-level candidates, not adding them. Practical Joke (Into Mischief), whose ground-saving positioning combined with a nice stretch punch over seven furlongs resulted in a 1 1/4-length tally in Saturday=s GI H. Allen Jerkens S. at the Spa, could be a candidate to run in the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint. But in the aftermath of the victory, trainer Chad Brown indicated the 5-for-5 one-turn winner was instead likely to be pointed toward the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile because the distance seems Aperfect@ for the colt. Just based on personal visual assessments, I=d similarly favor a mile over six furlongs for Practical Joke if he has to deviate from what appears to be a seven-furlong sweet spot. But his only two wins at a mile were one-turn races at Belmont Park, which will surely reignite the A0-for-two-turns@ stigma that shadowed the colt through the Triple Crown season and beyond. Lady Eli Tops Another Thriller A thesaurus is now required to come up with new superlatives to describe Lady Eli=s continued dominance of the North American distaff grass division. And of course, whatever this long-running fan favorite does on a racecourse will always be emotionally linked to the longshot tale of how she overcame life-threatening laminitis in both front feet after stepping on a nail as a 3-year-old and missing nearly 14 months of racing. When we last saw Lady Eli, she topped a corking, three-way photo finish in the GI Diana S. at Saratoga on July 22 after looping the field with a wide, powerful run. In that race, her uncoupled stablemate, Antonoe (First Defence), finished third after committing to an inside run through traffic. A clear path to victory never materialized for Antonoe, and it was not a stretch to think that if their positioning had been reversed, Antonoe might have beaten Lady Eli that afternoon. TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 10 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • AUGUST 28, 2017

As fate would have it, that Areversal of fortune@ scenario played out almost as if scripted in Saturday=s GII Ballston Spa S. at Saratoga. This time, the field turned for home with Antonoe outside and in the clear, while Lady Eli was bottled up behind a wall of horses at the head of the lane. An extremely patient and confident Irad Ortiz, Jr. waited for a three-wide passage to present itself, then committed fully to a shoulder-brushing sweep to the lead during which Lady Eli first wrested command from the target in front of her, then appeared to relish hearing and seeing another rival trying to run her down from the outside. Antonoe faded to fourth. Trainer Brown said Sunday that Lady Eli was A50-50 right now whether she=ll go into the [GI] Flower Bowl [S. on Oct. 8] or train up into the [GI] Breeders' Cup [Filly & Mare Turf].@

He admitted he was impressed by what he saw from Count Alexander. AI loved his stride on the backstretch, it looked like he had a really nice stride,@ Wilson said. AAnd then when they turned for home and he leveled out, it was really very impressive. The jockey [Slade Callaghan] called Mike, who is in Florida, and told him in 30 years of riding, he had never had a horse he couldn=t pull up, but he could not pull this horse up. So distance is not going to be any kind of problem for this horse.@

The Wilsons have about 30 horses in training, mostly with California trainer Vladimir Cerin, and traditionally purchase their racing prospects as yearlings. The decision to purchase Count Alexander for $210,000 at the OBS June sale this year, was mostly an emotional one and one which began with a talented 2-year-old colt by The Factor purchased by the Wilsons for $140,000 at last year=s Keeneland September sale. AI named him Lieutenant Logan (The Factor) after my father,@ Wilson said. AMike told me in 35 years of training, he=d never had a horse like that. He was at Gulfstream training and a front- end loader dropped a load of lumber and the horse shied, bucked the rider off and ran into a fence and killed himself. Mike called me crying, >In 35 years, I=ve never had a horse like that. He=s the best horse I ever had in 35 years.= Mike was so despondent and felt so bad--of course it wasn=t his fault--but he felt so bad. This was two weeks before the 2-year-old sale and I said, >Go get another one.= He said, >I could never--in 35 years I=ve never had a horse like that.= I said, >Well, go look. Get your mind off it. Go do something different.= So he went to the Ocala sale and he got this horse. Mike said he is good, he=s not Lieutenant Logan, but maybe he will be. Hopefully, this will be a happy ending to what started as a very sad story.@ The Wilsons have been involved with racehorse ownership for two decades now and have been represented by the likes of 2000 GI Hollywood Gold Cup winner Early Pioneer (Rahy) and multiple stakes winner Big Sky Chester (Afleet), fifth in the 1997 GI Breeders= Cup Turf. AMy father was a rodeo cowboy, so I grew up on a ranch and I was with horses all the time--Quarter Horses, mostly, and Appaloosas. We just always liked being around horses, so we started buying them and running them,@ Wilson explains of his involvement in the industry. The Wilsons could be well-represented when the Breeders= Cup makes its first appearance at their hometown track of Del Mar this November. If Count Alexander continues his progression in the Summer S., he could join Follow Me Crev (Quality Road), most recently third in the GII Suburban H., and GII Best Pal S. runner-up Dia de Pago (Macho Uno). ADia de Pago--which is payday in Spanish--runs in the [GI Del Mar] Futurity on Labor Day,@ Wilson said. AWe hope he wins that and then he would be in the Breeders= Cup, too, and that would be three horses.@ (Click to return to p1)

Cut back to this distance off the layoff July 23, she stormed to the lead in the final furlong for an 11-1 tally. Much more fancied this time around as the narrow second choice returning to stakes company, Ginger N Rye broke well before settling in fifth on the inside off of a sizzling :21.21 quarter. Continuing to hug the hedge around the turn, she found a seam at the three-sixteenths pole, darted to the front just inside the furlong grounds and edged clear from there to a convincing score. succeeding in the game with Paul gaining a thorough education HAVE BALLYPHILIP at some of the most noted nurseries in the world. He explains, "After I studied a commerce degree at UCD I ANOTHER >ANGEL= IN THEIR gained experience at stud farms all over the world--Juddmonte Farms in the UK and USA, Ardsley Stud in New Zealand and MIDST? Corduff Stud in Ireland. After those stints I took on management positions, first at Mount Coote Stud with Alan Lillingston where I spent six years, then with the Cashmans in Rathbarry Stud where I spent eight years. Finally I worked with Denis Brosnan in Croom House Stud for 14 years. They were years well spent and I learnt a huge amount from these people before finally branching out on our own." For much of his time at Croom House, Ballyphilip was also in full swing and during that period it was Marie who held the reins and she was certainly highly qualified to do so. Cont. p2

ITBA award for the exploits of Tiggy Wiggy | Racing Post By DaithR Harvey For a boutique farm that keeps no more than a dozen mares, Ballyphilip Stud in Limerick has certainly punched above its weight in producing and rearing high-class flat horses. The farm, owned by Paul and Marie McCartan, is riding high on the success this summer of two of its current star graduates Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Although Harry Angel has won a G1 Darley July Cup, he is still rated three pounds inferior to fellow 3-year-old Battaash whose blistering performance in the G2 Qatar King George S. at Goodwood earned him a BHA rating of 122, which put him on a par with Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy). Despite the anticipated York showdown between the pair not quite materialising when Battaash finished fourth, as a 3-year-old he still has the potential to add to the Ballyphilip Group 1 roll of honour. For the McCartans, the year 2000 was a significant one on two counts for not only did they get married but they also purchased what is now Ballyphilip Stud and began the process of converting it into a farm suitable for breeding and rearing thoroughbreds. They both brought strong credentials for TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 2 OF 19 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • 28 AUGUST, 2017

Tiberian and Olivier Peslier | Scoop Dyga

There was a short head between Tiberian and Doha Dream in the G3 Prix de Reux over this course and distance Aug. 6 and it was nip-and-tuck once again with the same outcome to this festival-closing feature. Never far off this standard, the bay who is Melbourne Cup-bound was second to Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) in the 2015 Prix Chaudenay at Longchamp and filled the same position behind One Foot In Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris over a mile and a half at Chantilly in October. Returning to beat the subsequent G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil winner Talismanic (GB) (Medaglia d=Oro) in both the Mar. 28 Listed Prix de la Porte de Madrid and May 8 G3 Prix d=Hedouville also over 12 furlongs at Saint-Cloud, he did too much on the lead before fading to seventh in that track=s July 2 G1 Grand Prix. Having made all in the Reux, on this occasion Tiberian was settled with two behind initially by Olivier Peslier. Keeping tabs on Doha Dream throughout, he allowed that rival first run and the lead once straightened for home but wrested the advantage passing the furlong pole. As they battled it out again, it was the Alain Couetil trainee who clung on to sign off his European campaign in perfect fashion. ALast time, with so few runners, I left tactics to Olivier and he made all but today I asked him to wait and get cover because he is better being ridden like that,@ Couetil explained. AHe has a good turn of foot and knows how to quicken, plus he loves fast ground and gives me the impression he is getting better and better. He enters quarantine in Newmarket Sept. 13 and two weeks later will fly to Australia for preparations for the Melbourne Cup.@

Owen Burrows | Racingfotos.com Trainer Owen Burrows has enjoyed a fruitful recent spell and he is looking forward to stepping Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) back up to group 1 company following the colt=s successful reappearance in the G2 Hungerford S. at Newbury recently. Burrows had a frustrating time with the 4-year-old last year and after finishing second to Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) in the G1 QIPO 2000 Guineas his season unravelled as two disappointing efforts followed. Surgery to remove a chip from a fetlock was required after his penultimate start in August of last year and another stable-related injury after that saw Massaat spend a year off the track. Thankfully for Burrows and the Shadwell team it appears Massaat is showing no ill-effects from those niggles and a trip to France looks likely for his next target.
