Things that are large, loud, and grandiose tend to attract attention. This trend has unfortunately infiltrated much of the Church as well. Jesus, however, operated by a different set of principles to those of the world. The opposite, in fact. He taught that if we want to be great in the kingdom of God then we must be the least, and the servant of all. He taught that if we are to be first, we must be last, and that His kingdom would never grow through mere human desire, but through the obedient lives of people dead to themselves and the world, but alive in Christ! Thankfully, we have met many church leaders in Asia who understand God’s principles and who care nothing for fame. They desire to be hidden in Christ, so that He will get all the glory from their lives. In some countries where persecution is strong, staying hidden from the public eye is not only desirable, but a necessity for many church leaders if they want to remain out of prison.

  • Tourism As a Territorial Strategy in the South China Sea
CHAPTER 3 Tourism as a Territorial Strategy in the South China Sea Ian Rowen INTRODUCTION The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is deploying tourism as a tool in its territorialization program for the South China Sea, reconfiguring geopo- litical imaginaries and popular political discourse, and developing new lei- sure spaces, economies, and infrastructure. This approach is consistent with China’s deployment of outbound tourism to achieve political objec- tives in other regions, both within and far beyond its periphery. Outbound tourism from China has been used as an economic lever for extracting political concessions not only in nearby Taiwan, but as far away as Canada. At the same time that tourism is being used to consolidate Chinese state authority in Tibet (Shepherd 2006), it has also triggered widespread pop- ular protest in semi-autonomous Hong Kong. State-directed Chinese tourism is now increasingly precipitating international protest over the territorially contested South China Sea. I. Rowen (*) Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Singapore © The Author(s) 2018 61 J. Spangler et al. (eds.), Enterprises, Localities, People, and Policy in the South China Sea, Critical Studies of the Asia-Pacific, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-62828-8_3 62 I. ROWEN The unsettled sovereignty of the South China Sea has provided a theater for several “creative territorialization” strategies, including tourism, administrative rezoning, and land reclamation. This chapter will focus on the former two and argue that the PRC is using tourism as a tactic in the South China Sea not only to assert military and admin- istrative control over the region, but also to promote patriotic senti- ment among its own citizens.

  • Formation of the Traditional Chinese State Ritual System of Sacrifice To
religions Article Formation of the Traditional Chinese State Ritual System of Sacrifice to Mountain and Water Spirits Jinhua Jia 1,2 1 College of Humanities, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou 225009, China; [email protected] 2 Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Macau, Macau SAR, China Abstract: Sacrifice to mountain and water spirits was already a state ritual in the earliest dynasties of China, which later gradually formed a system of five sacred peaks, five strongholds, four seas, and four waterways, which was mainly constructed by the Confucian ritual culture. A number of modern scholars have studied the five sacred peaks from different perspectives, yielding fruitful results, but major issues are still being debated or need to be plumbed more broadly and deeply, and the whole sacrificial system has not yet drawn sufficient attention. Applying a combined approach of religious, historical, geographical, and political studies, I provide here, with new discoveries and conclusions, the first comprehensive study of the formational process of this sacrificial system and its embodied religious-political conceptions, showing how these geographical landmarks were gradually integrated with religious beliefs and ritual-political institutions to become symbols of territorial, sacred, and political legitimacy that helped to maintain the unification and government of the traditional Chinese imperium for two thousand years. A historical map of the locations of the sacrificial temples for the eighteen mountain and water spirits is appended. Keywords: five sacred peaks; five strongholds; four seas; four waterways; state ritual system of sacrifice; Chinese religion; Chinese historical geography Citation: Jia, Jinhua. 2021. Formation of the Traditional Chinese State Ritual System of Sacrifice to Mountain and Water Spirits.

  • Post 87 Sanya, Hainan, China
1000 Days in China – Post 87 February 11-26, 2021 Traveling to the End of the Earth – Part 1 Sanya, Hainan, China My plane's view as it circled the Nanhai Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy of the Southern Sea). It seems so amazing that at Christmas, I was in Harbin, China looking at Siberian Tigers and Ice Sculptures and then had dinner in a Mongolian Yurt at New Year’s and now I am lying at the beach in Sanya which is also referred to as “End of the Earth (Tianya Haijiao)”. In 7 weeks, I had travelled from a polar climate to a tropical one while staying in one country, China. China often refers to itself as the Middle Kingdom between Heaven and Earth. Sanya is an island that is at the southern-most point of China and is nearly the same latitude as Da Nang, Vietnam. Being so far South, it has a tropical climate and has beautiful beaches. On clear days, the sea seems to stretch on forever, with small islets visible in the distance. Part of the lure of Sanya on Hainan Island is the view when you look out from the Southern most point – “Tianya Haijiao” which translates to ‘edges of the heaven, corners of the sea'. When you’re sitting on the sun-warmed sand of this vast beach fronting the South China Sea, the name makes sense. According to local legend, a young couple from two rival clans ran away and ended up at the beach. Believing it was the end of the earth, they swore their love for each other, jumped into the sea, and were transformed into two stones.
