    Press Information THE ART OF THE MERRION Press Information: Sarah Glavey The Merrion, Dublin Tel: (353) 1 603 0600 Fax: (353) 1 603 0700 Email: [email protected] The spectacular collection of 19 th and 20 th Century Irish art hung throughout The Merrion, Dublin’s most luxurious 5-star hotel, is widely considered to be one of the most important in Ireland. Created from four magnificently restored Listed Georgian townhouses, the grace and elegance of The Merrion’s interior provides the perfect setting for the paintings. The result is a dramatic and successful marriage of classical architecture and contemporary art. True to the spirit of 18 th century arts patronage, Martin Mooney, one of Ireland’s finest young painters, was commissioned to paint a series of works for the elegant neo- classical stairwell in The Merrion’s Front Hall. The Front Hall remains much as it would have been when the house was built in the mid 18 th century. Plain white walls show off the original cornices and plasterwork, leaving Mooney’s murals as the main decorative feature. These, in subtle, warm colours, depict imaginary classical ruins, buildings and architectural details. The pronounced architectural element of Mooney’s style is particularly apt for The Merrion’s Georgian interior. After attending the University of Ulster, Mooney studied at Brighton Polytechnic, followed by a Post Graduate Degree at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. His work has been widely exhibited in both one-man and group exhibitions at galleries including The Solomon Gallery, Dublin; Waterman Fine Art, London; Theo Waddington Fine Art, London; The Royal Academy, London and The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin.

The Building of the State Science and Engineering with Government on Merrion Street www.ucd.ie/merrionstreet Introduction Although the Government Buildings complex on Merrion Street is one of most important and most widely recognised buildings in Ireland, relatively few are aware of its role in the history of science and technology in the country. At the start of 2011, in preparation for the centenary of the opening of the building, UCD initiated a project seeking to research and record that role. As the work progressed, it became apparent that the story of science and engineering in the building from 1911 to 1989 mirrored in many ways the story of the country over that time, reflecting and supporting national priorities through world wars, the creation of an independent state and the development of a technology sector known and respected throughout the world. All those who worked or studied in the Royal College of Science for Ireland or UCD in Merrion Street – faculty and administrators, students and porters, technicians and librarians – played a part in this story. All those interviewed as part of this project recalled their days in the building with affection and pride. As chair of the committee that oversaw this project, and as a former Merrion Street student, I am delighted to present this publication as a record of UCD’s association with this great building. An Taoiseach Government Buildings Upper Merrion Street Dublin 2 1 September 2020 Re: Chambers Ireland Concerns regarding the EWSS and the co-ordination of the response to Covid-19 Dear Taoiseach, Chambers Ireland welcomes the early reconvening of the Dáil as there remain many policy areas which need the immediate attention of government. Since the Government’s July package was introduced circumstances for business have evolved and gaps have become apparent. Government needs to address the long-term nature of this pandemic with an appropriate suite of responses and the critical need to introduce a programme of structured interventions focused on regions which see restrictions reintroduced, and separately the sectors which are most acutely affected by the impact of Covid-19. Chamber Ireland Concerns: 1. There is a need for additional supports to help areas where restrictions have to be reintroduced to sustain businesses that are active in those areas, and then to support them upon reopening. 2. There are failings in the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme which need to be addressed urgently. 3. It is critical that there is a co-ordinated, coherent, and clear programme of policy and communications from government, the absence of which is undermining the viability of businesses and the sustainability of our economy. Government Action Required: There needs to be: 1. Specific tailored packages for businesses that are operating in areas where restrictions are reintroduced, and, 2. CD: Born here in Dublin in 23'd September, 1952. 3. MM: 1952 right. That makes you now, you're fifty-six this year, fifty-five now, and you'll be fifty-six next September, so yes you're just fifty-five. 4. CD: I grew up in the north side of Dublin and my father was in aviation so we lived at the airport. 5. MM: You lived actually at the airport? 6. CD: In the airport on the background, it was Colinstown in those days. 7. MM: Named after yourself, it's as if you owned the place (laugh). 8. CD: I remember my father going out the winter in the snow to pull the aircraft out of the snow; he was in the crash team. He was one of the fust people, his father didn't speak to him, you know, when he said he was going into aviation, to an airfield out in Dublin airport and he had a good job in the civil service at the time, his father thought he was mad you know. If planes were meant to fly, you know. 9. MM: Yeah a different time wasn't it. So your father had been in the civil service first and then took an idea for aviation in exciting times when it was only starting off? 10. CD: He was doing architecture and engineering and craftsmanship, all that kind of stuff, you know, so that's when he went to work in the airport.

I am writing to communicate the views of the broad Ibec Ibec represents the interests of Irish business including indigenous and multinational enterprises, and SMEs, spanning all sectors of the Irish economy. Ibec and its 38 sector associations work with government and policymakers at a national and international level to shape business conditions and drive economic growth. Ibec is also a member of Business at OECD and BusinessEurope. Ibec, as evidenced through its interaction on both domestic, ATAD and OECD BEPS initiatives, is actively supportive of tax initiatives that seek to align profit with substance globally. In addition, Ibec and its members are in favour of initiatives that seek to provide business with the tax environment it needs to support growth and investment. Within this broad policy perspective, supporting Irish business to internationalise and compete in foreign markets. A broad, consistent and comprehensive treaty network that seeks to eliminate double taxation and contains strong dispute resolution mechanisms can provide business with certainty when expanding or selling abroad. It is also the case that a broader base of tax treaties will provide a broader base for Irish investment abroad in assets markets for example ESG- qualifying assets and green bonds which will grow in significance over the coming years. Priorities for enhancement Ibec members have set out three main objectives when it comes to the development of the Irish Tax Treaty Policy: 1.

Previously, the museum’s collections had been divided between Leinster House, originally the headquarters of the Royal Dublin Society, and the Natural History Museum in Merrion Street, built as an extension to Leinster House in 1856–7. Under the Act, the government purchased the museum buildings and collections. To provide storage and display space for the Leinster House collections, the government quickly implemented plans to construct a new, custom-built museum on Kildare Street and on 29th August 1890, the new museum opened its doors to the public.

Competitors from 20 countries were required to prepare dishes that used as many pure compounds as possible without fruits, vegetable, meat, fish or spices. The jury which included chef Patrick Terrien, Yolanda Rigault, Michael Pontif, and Sandrine Kault-Perrin, also evaluated the students on innovation, complexity and flavour. According to Dr. Roisin Burke, Senior Lecturer, TU Dublin, the dishes created by the two students met the judges' criteria. "David created a cocktail which appeared as Eggnog but tasted of bacon, and what appeared to be a bacon crisp but had a flavour of Eggnog. His main dish included a Note by Note beetroot protein cake, horseradish jelly and beetroot cremeaux. It was presented in the form of a meat muscle and put under a smoked filled lid." For her part, Eugenia created a Note by Note version of a breakfast dish with what appeared to be eggs, layered pork sausage and jellied beans, bacon flakes and the tomato element were created in the form of a Note by Note ‘Bloody Mary’ cocktail.
