FROM VOICE ~ TOPICS: branding/identity, history, signage, typography The (Mostly) True Story of Helvetica and the New York City Subway by Paul Shaw November 18, 2008 here is a commonly held belief that Helvetica is the signage typeface of the New York City subway system, a belief reinforced by Helvetica, Gary Hustwit’s popular 2007 documentary T about the typeface. But it is not true—or rather, it is only somewhat true. Helvetica is the official typeface of the MTA today, but it was not the typeface specified by Unimark International when it created a new signage system at the end of the 1960s. Why was Helvetica not chosen originally? What was chosen in its place? Why is Helvetica used now, and when did the changeover occur? To answer those questions this essay explores several important histories: of the New York City subway system, transportation signage in the 1960s, Unimark International and, of course, Helvetica. These four strands are woven together, over nine pages, to tell a story that ultimately transcends the simple issue of Helvetica and the subway. The Labyrinth As any New Yorker—or visitor to the city—knows, the subway system is a labyrinth. This is because it is an amalgamation of three separate systems, two of which incorporated earlier urban railway lines. The current New York subway system was formed in 1940 when the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit), the BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit) and the IND (Independent) lines were merged. The IRT lines date to 1904; the BMT lines to 1908 (when it was the BRT, or Brooklyn Rapid Transit); and the IND to 1932. -

3/4/2014 MTA - Eye on the Future Welcome to the latest MTA "Eye on the Future," in which we present capital projects that are planned to be advertised from March 2014 – September 2014. The "Eye" is hosted on our MTA Capital Program web site, which assembles key information and resources about the Capital Program in one convenient location. It is another part of how we are changing the way we do business and we hope that you find it to be useful. The MTA Capital Program is not only very important for the safety and reliability of the MTA transportation system; it is also vital to the regional economy. As described in this issue of the "Eye," the MTA is preparing to undertake approximately $4 billion in capital work that spans many areas, including civil, structural, and electrical, as well as new technologies. Based on the October 2009 APTA publication on the Economic Impact of Public Transportation Investments, this amount of investment is projected to create more than 98 thousand jobs and generate close to $17 billion in economic activity for the New York region. These projects are vital to the reliability, growth and resiliency of the system and contribute to the regional economy. We look forward to your participation. Vincent M.A. Candidate, Art and Art Education Teachers College, Columbia University A&HA 4085: Historical Foundations in Art Education Dr. Ami Kantawala December 14th, 2010 A HISTORY OF TILE DESIGN IN THE NYC SUBWAY 2 Abstract Like most boys growing up, I have always been enamored with trains. As I grew older, I realized it was less about the trains themselves at it was the environment that surrounded the trains. Growing up outside of New York City, my love for trains grew out of the majestic mosaic tiled sta- tions where I would stand and wait for trains. The designs I had admired as a youth had always re- minded me of a classic New York era seen only in movies. As an adult, I still find beauty in the design of the New York City subway. Now I realize it is now more about artistry that can be observed rather than the trains. As a practicing artist, I found much can be learned by analyzing the styles used by the creators of the subway as well as the artists that have installed their works there. This paper will take a deep look at the origins of these designs by looking at original draw- ings that were completed over a century ago. By studying these drawing techniques, the reader will re-discover the talent and artistic skill these designers possessed, something than has been lost in the modern era of computer aided design. -
