Plan................................................................................ 41 iii Preface The Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Plan has been prepared under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to guide recovery activities within a planned and logical framework. This recovery plan has been subject to consideration and approval under respective threatened species legislation in the four range States; New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. The results of actions implemented from the previous Recovery Plans (Brown and Wilson 1984; Stephenson 1991; Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Team 1999) and recommendations by Saunders (2002) lay the foundation for developing strategies in this Plan. The production of this Plan was delayed due to limitations on project officer time and procedural matters. Actions undertaken during the

The species is listed nationally as endangered and has been the subject of intensive study and conservation activities over the past 25 years. Reproductive and demographic data collected over this period from the wild population form the basis of this thesis. Remote breeding sites in southwestern Tasmania at Melaleuca and Birchs Inlet were used to study this species in the wild. Through deployment of up to 52 artificial nest boxes and observations of natural nests at Melaleuca it was possible to collect information on a range of reproductive success parameters over a long period, including 12 consecutive breeding seasons.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Insights into genomic structure and evolutionary processes of coastal Suaeda species in East Asia using cpDNA, nDNA, and genome‑wide SNPs Jong‑Soo Park, Dong‑Pil Jin & Byoung‑Hee Choi* Species in the genus Suaeda have few diagnostic characters and substantial morphological plasticity. Hence, regional foras do not provide clear taxonomic information for Suaeda spp. in East Asia. In order to assess the taxonomy of four species in the genus Suaeda (S. australis, S. maritima, S. japonica, and S. heteroptera), cpDNA (rpl32‑trnL and trnH‑psbA), nDNA (ITS), and MIG‑seq analyses were carried out. Genome‑wide SNP results indicated three lineages: (1) S. australis in Korea and S. maritima in Japan, (2) S. maritima in Korea and S. heteroptera in China, and (3) S. japionica. In phylogenetic trees and genotype analyses, cpDNA and nDNA results showed discrepancies, while S. japonica and S. maritima in Korea, and S. heteroptera in China shared the same haplotype and ribotype. We suggest that the shared haplotype may be due to chloroplast capture. Based on our results, we assume that S. japonica was formed by homoploid hybrid speciation between the two lineages. Te genus Suaeda Forssk. ex J.F. Gmel., in the Amaranthaceae family 1, comprises approximately 80–100 spe- cies of halophytic herbs or shrubs distributed worldwide in semiarid and arid regions, and along the seashores, including the Pacifc 2–5. An integrated molecular and morphological phylogenetic study of the subfamily Suae- doideae Ulbr. suggests that the genus Suaeda is comprised of two subgenera (Brezia (Moq.) Freitag & Schütze, and Suaeda) and eight sections (Brezia (Moq.) Volk.

I was in the Port Davey Marine Reserve, deep in the Southwest National Park. Looking back at me, I thought, was the soul of Tasmania. I had flown in by light plane the previous day. You come here by plane or by boat. This is a soul protected by the law of man and the lie of land. There is no other way in. This is part of land which a panel of objective but hard- nosed environmentalists at UNESCO headquarters in Paris decided deserved the appellation of World Heritage Wilderness Area. This a title not awarded to places where there are more people than peace, where there is more noise than nature, where there is more concrete than bird calls. To earn the title, the environmentocrats in Paris must judge whether the candidate has, amongst other criteria, “natural features consisting of physical and biological formations or groups of such formations, which are of outstanding universal value from the aesthetic or scientific point of view”, and “geological and physiographical formations and precisely delineated areas which constitute the habitat of threatened species of animals and plants of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation”. They wouldn’t have had to think too hard about it. This is the home of extraordinary beauty. It is the home of the TASMANIA 40ºSouth 21 much-loved and desperately threatened orange- bellied parrot.

LOCATION Comprises a contiguous network of reserved lands that extends over much of south-western Tasmania. including five national parks (Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair, Franklin-Lower Gordon Wild Rivers, Southwest, Walls of Jerusalem and Hartz Mountains), four state reserves (Devils Gullet, Marakoopa Cave, Exit Cave and Port Davey) and part of Liffey Falls State Reserve, four conservation areas (Central Plateau, Oakleigh Creek, Southwest and St. Clair Lagoon), and"a number of protected areas, forest reserves as well as land verted in the Hydro-Electric Commission. There have been major changes in the fire regime of southwestern Tasmania over the past 170 years. The fire regime has changed from an Aboriginal fire regime of frequent low-intensity fires in buttongrass moorland (mostly in spring and autumn) with only the occasional high-intensity forest fire, to the early European fire regime of frequent high-intensity fires in all vegetation types, to a regime of low to medium intensity buttongrass moorland fires and finally to the current regime of few fires. These changes in the fire regime resulted in major impacts to the region's fire-sensitive vegetation types during the early European period, while the current low fire frequency across much of southwestern Tasmania has resulted in a large proportion of the region's fire-adapted buttongrass moorland being classified as old-growth. These extensive areas of old-growth buttongrass moorland mean that the potential for another large-scale ecologically damaging wildfire is high and, to avoid this, it would be better to re-introduce a regime oflow-intensity fires into the region.
