Gastritis 1 Cath: Callegan 1st April 1852 – This woman is of a tall and slender make, Æt: 25 Convict of Leuco-phlegmatic Temperament, who has suffered 22nd March 1852 much from Sea Sickness for the last ten days, now at Sea complains of a sense of burning heat in the Epigastric Discharged region, increased on pressure and during respiration, has much gastric irritability attended with an increase of pain, great restlessness, urgent thirst, Headache, with extreme prostration of strength – Pulse small and quick, Tongue preternaturally red and dry. Bowels opened by Haustus Niger yesterday – Sinapism: Epig: reg: Mist: Salin: Diaphoret: Ѯj ter die PB010266 2nd April – Is rather better, bowels freely acted on, but there is still much gastric irritation – no appetite, complains still of Vertigo. Tongue very red but moist, skin cool, - Pulse small 80. To have Infus: Gentianæ Composit: Ʒj č Magnesia Sulphas Ѯfs ter die. 3rd Better, slept well. Bowels free. Reptr. Idem 11th Child is alive and that is all, it has been sinking gradually since last evening, to have Stimulants administered, but it cannot be expected to survive long. 12th Moribund. 1 P.M. Gradually sunk and expired.

Convict’s child from “Marasmus” and Bulimia”, appetite inordinate 4th May 1852 eating the allowance for two grown up people if allowed, at Sea’ skin dry. Bowels very much relaxed evacuations Died somewhat dark and very offensive. Rx Hyd: cum Cretæ gr if Rhei rad: Contr: gr ij Zingib: rad: Contr: gr ifs M ter in die 10th May. Is worse this morning and is ill as it can well be. Constantly picking its nose. Idem 15th Much the same, is still much purged, motions extremely offensive. Infant as low as possible. Contr. 21st Child still alive, though very ill. Contr. 24th This child is much worse this morning, and not likely to last long. Cont: Remedia 26th Is gradually sinking. Vespere Moribund 27th Expired.

Dysenteria 6 Bridget Lyons The subject of this case is an old woman of broken-down Æt 42 Convict constitution from age and mental anxiety & of a 6th May 1852 Phlegmatic Temperament, presented herself for medical at Sea treatment complaining of being frequently purged Died attended with tormina and much straining when at stool, with tenderness of abdomen increased on pressure, and extreme irritability of stomach. Pulse frequent and small. Tongue coated with a dark fur, skin dry. To have Olei Ricini Ѯj č Tincturæ Opii ɱ x Stm Pulv Doveri H.S. Sumend. 7th May. Much purged during the night, in other respects the same. Hydr. Chlorid: gr v Stm. Pulv Doveri gr v bis in die. 8th Feels somewhat relieved, had some sleep last night, & less purging. Idem rd PB010275 June 3 Woman still purged frequently during the night and is very low this morning, and not likely to last long. Pulse 70 very weak Tongue red, skin shrivelled and dry, is supported with a little wine in arrowroot congee

occasionally. Pergat 4th Continues much the same as yesterday, purged four times during the past night, is much troubled with cough

and reduced to the lowest ebb. She has taken food some arrowroot and wine also egg drink which seems to remain on her stomach. Idem th 5 Slept well last night, has been purged only once lsat night, sat a little this morning. Idem 6th She is as low as she can be and to all appearance

gradually sinking. The purging is stopped. Idem 7th Bowels open only once -Tongue still very red and polished 7 studded with many raised papillæ, skin feels

moister, and on the whole she is a shade better. Idem 5 P.M. Complains of considerable pain in abdomen. Bowels open once – To have

Olei Ricini Ѯfs č Træ opii ɱ v Stm. Reptr. Empl: Sinapis: reg: abdom: 8th Woman much the same, had a very bad night and

purged twice since midnight – felt great relief from the mustard application. Pergat 9th Continues still very low, recovery doubted.

10th Woman remains very low and apparently sinking, eats a little arrowroot and wine. Bowels open twice in bed.

Pulse 70 small and weak. Sordes and great redness of Tongue. Contr. 11th She continues much s at the last report. B. open once,

supported by wine and arrowroot. Contr. mist: 12th Woman has been slowly sinking, and now just alive, and scarcely sensible, has been taking some nourishment

& stimulants up to this time but is now scarcely able to take anything. B. open once Idem 13th Is still lingering, but is weaker, slept some in the

forepart of the night, has no pain, her person emits a strong cadaverous odour. Pulse intermittent. Countenance PB010276 sharpened – Eyes sunk in their sockets. Idem th 14 This poor woman gradually sunk and expired this morning at 8 A.M.

7 Hannah Browning This young woman of a full habit of body – of healthy Menorrhagia Æt. 22. Convict appearance presented herself for treatment for profuse 13th May 1852 Catamenial flow of twenty-four hours duration, to have at Sea cold application applied to the genitals, also the Cured following- Acid: Sulphuric dil ɱ xv Aqua Ѯifs M ter in die Sumendus 14th Flow much less, but complains of headache and nausea. Contr. Mist: Acid: 16th Flow diminishing. Bowels not open for the last twenty-four hours. Pulv: Jalapa Comp. Ʒj č Hydrarg: Chlorid gr iij M Stm. 18th Quite well. Bowels freely open by purgative. 19th No particular complaint. Discharged.

Idem 3rd Is much distressed in the chest – child quite restless Contr. 4th Is a little better this morning, chest easier. Idem 6th Cough very troublesome, has been frequently purged again. Contr. omnia 7th Child no better, has much cough. Bowels very open. Contr. Med: 8th 6 A.M. Child apparently dying, pretty well up till last evening when a great change took place in it – but its mother did not bring it to me until it as on the eve of dying. Stimulants were administered and the child was placed in a hot bath but nothing that could be done would avail - it rapidly sunk and expired at 9 A.M.

Idem 4th Is better today, but had another attack of convulsions yesterday, but of much shorter duration than usual, and it came on at a later hour in the day.
