Contagious Disease and Commercial Cinema: a Study of Selected Films for Their Impact on Health Literacy
Global Media Journal-Indian Edition; Volume 12 Issue1; June 2020. ISSN:2249-5835 Contagious Disease and Commercial Cinema: A Study of Selected Films for Their Impact on Health Literacy Subinita Paul Assistant Professor of B.Voc in Journalism And Mass Communication University of Kalyani (www.klyuniv.ac.in) Abstract Cinema being the highest form of entertainment has rarely presented the world of infectious diseases. Even if it has, the plot has been ruined by the presence of unrealistic creatures, politicising the use of bio-weapon. Only the biographies of some famous scientists or to develop the history of great epidemics and pandemics, the infectious diseases somewhat got attention marginally. The current pandemic situation has correctly pointed out to us, that how much health literacy is lacking in both rural as well as in urban society. Therefore commercial films, being made for and accepted by anyone without barrier, how much effectively ascertain towards the health literacy on infectious disease, is a fascinating topic to research further. This paper will try to find out how much commercial films, based on viral infections and contagious diseases, actually contribute towards the health literacy and awareness of the audience. Introduction The film, being the unique type of amusement, has consistently been a mirror for the general public. There is continuously a ceaseless discussion, that whether film shows the real happenings of the general public, or it just moves the general public to think the same. As Aristotle said, that, fiction is of great philosophical interest than history. Because, “History represents things as they are, while fiction represents how they might be and ought to be”. -

No 848 a Weekly Bulletin for Residents of Auroville 12Th December 2020
News and Notes No 848 A weekly bulletin for residents of Auroville 12th December 2020 Bird Watches watercolor by Marlenka HOUSE OF MOTHER’S AGENDA “In fifty years the whole world, all the receptive section of humanity (I am not saying intellectual, I am saying receptive), all the receptive section of the world will be embraced – not “embraced”: ABSORBED in the power of Sri Aurobindo's thought. Those who already are have the good fortune of being the first ones, that's all.” — The Mother. The Agenda . 16 February 1972 (+ 50 years = Year 2022) As mind seeks for light, for the discovery of knowledge and for mastery by knowledge, so life seeks for the development of its own force and for mastery by force: its quest is for growth, power, conquest, possession, satisfaction, creation, joy, love, beauty; its joy of existence is in a constant self-expression, development, diverse manifoldness of action, creation, enjoyment, an abundant and strong intensity of itself and its power. The gnostic evolution will lift that to its highest and fullest expression, but it will not act for the power, satisfaction, enjoyment of the mental or vital ego, for its narrow possession of itself and its eager ambitious grasp on others and on things or for its greater self-affirmation and magnified embodiment; for in that way no spiritual fullness and perfection can come. The gnostic life will exist and act for the Divine in itself and in the world, for the Divine in all; the increasing possession of the individual being and the world by the Divine Presence, Light, Power, Love, Delight, Beauty will be the sense of life to the gnostic being. -

Why Manju Warrier Is Not Equal to Mohanlal
International Journal of English Research International Journal of English Research ISSN: 2455-2186; Impact Factor: RJIF 5.32 Received: 02-02-2019; Accepted: 06-03-2019 www.englishjournals.com Volume 5; Issue 2; March 2019; Page No. 86-89 Gendering stardom: Why Manju Warrier is not equal to Mohanlal Arya MP Research Scholar, Postgraduate, Department of English, St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur, Kerala, India Abstract Gender became, and still remains the focus of heated debate in Malayalam film industry (Mollywood: the film industry of Kerala, India) post the actor assault case in February 2017. The contemporaneity of the issue leads to this research paper, which is an exploration of the role played by gender in shaping stardom in a regional film industry such as the Malayalam industry. Stardom is analyzed by choosing the personas of Manju Warrier (signifying the female superstar) and Mohanlal (representative of the male superstar). The paper traces the reasons, both cinematic and pragmatic, to explore how the actors’ persona, political stances, characters enacted, and critical reception at theatres that point towards the creation of a gendered stardom rather than an objective renown and fame that they enjoy in the present cultural scenario. The scope of the research lies in exploring how gender is not a passive, but an active participant in the mental creation of icons in spectators. The findings are also portentous in understanding how the spectator’s psyche is unconsciously constructed to imbibe gender as a means of ‘Othering’. Keywords: gender, stardom, stereotyping, persona, spectator 1. Introduction from acting careers (or any other career at large), Warrier The Oxford Dictionary defines the term ‘actor’ as “a person belongs to an era when getting married begins a new phase whose profession is acting on the stage, in films, or on of a woman’s life, and puts an end to her profession, television” (“actor”), and proceeds to explain how the word especially in the case of women in the film industry. -
Misogyny in Malayalam Films
International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences. ISSN 2250-3226 Volume 11, Number 1 (2021), pp. 7-15 © Research India Publications https://dx.doi.org/10.37622/IJHSS/11.1.2021.7-15 Misogyny in Malayalam Films Greeshma D Guest Lecturer, University of Kerala, India. Abstract Malayalam movies are always praised for the complexity of characters and their mesmerising scripts. But many raised voices against the misogyny that is still prevalent in the industry. Actresses have little or no role unless it is a female-centric movie. This condition reflects the deeply rooted gender discrimination and patriarchy in the state which upholds modernity only in the superficial level. Audience imitates their heroes and worships them as demi- gods. So, it is essential in their part to deliver healthy content. Even today, there is a lack of strong female characters in Malayalam movies, they are only reduced to ornaments and plot devices. Superstars and fans associations rule over the industry. The abduction and rape of a female actress and the response from Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) all point out to how male-dominated the industry is. Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), was formed as a response to the misogynous position adopted by a male-dominated organisation of Malayalam cinema. The industry could not accept these strong opinionated as they ridiculed the collective through a satirical skit with superstars and other women actors. The present study would explore the misogyny in Malayalam movies from different aspects. Keywords: Misogyny, WCC, AMMA 8 Greeshma D INTRODUCTION Subjectivity has been a major concern for Foucault (1981) throughout his philosophical enquiries, and he considers the process of subjectivization as the centre stage in his conception of power. -
