ISSN:2249-5835 Contagious Disease and Commercial Cinema: A Study of Selected Films for Their Impact on Health Literacy Subinita Paul Assistant Professor of B.Voc in Journalism And Mass Communication University of Kalyani (www.klyuniv.ac.in) Abstract Cinema being the highest form of entertainment has rarely presented the world of infectious diseases. Even if it has, the plot has been ruined by the presence of unrealistic creatures, politicising the use of bio-weapon. Only the biographies of some famous scientists or to develop the history of great epidemics and pandemics, the infectious diseases somewhat got attention marginally. The current pandemic situation has correctly pointed out to us, that how much health literacy is lacking in both rural as well as in urban society. Therefore commercial films, being made for and accepted by anyone without barrier, how much effectively ascertain towards the health literacy on infectious disease, is a fascinating topic to research further. This paper will try to find out how much commercial films, based on viral infections and contagious diseases, actually contribute towards the health literacy and awareness of the audience. Introduction The film, being the unique type of amusement, has consistently been a mirror for the general public. There is continuously a ceaseless discussion, that whether film shows the real happenings of the general public, or it just moves the general public to think the same. As Aristotle said, that, fiction is of great philosophical interest than history. Because, “History represents things as they are, while fiction represents how they might be and ought to be”. -

But most movies women were portrayed for sheer beauty and attraction. Women in cinema start with an object of love and end in marriage. And it’s a fact is that roles for women and women characters are far below as proportionality. Women film makers and actresses criticise that the media represent the interests of the elite class or superior gender and women has nothing in it. The glory and success of women and their contribution toward society and their fighting toward the evils and stereotypes never get proper respect and appreciation. And gender representation in cinema is one of the main concern in the present scenario. It’s a fact that the majority of women characters tends to reinforce harmful gender stereotypes. The Malayalam film industry is one of the most influential film industries in India. Each year plentiful movies are beholding the silver screen. Movies with varied genres and out of the box thoughts are the main highlights of the Malayalam film industry. There are many pieces of research made on the portrayal of women or gender in popular films. -

Abstract The film is one of the most popular sources of entertainment worldwide. Plentiful films are produced each year and the amount of spectators is also huge. Films are to be called as the mirror of society, because they portray the actual reality of the society through the cinematography. Thus, cinema plays an essential role in shaping views about, caste, creed and gender. There are many pieces of research made on the representation of women or gender in films. But, through this research, the researcher wants to analyse in- depth about the character representation of women in the Malayalam film industry how strong the so-called Mollywood constructs the strongest and stoutest women characters in Malayalam cinema in the 21st-century cinema. This study confers how women are portrayed in the Malayalam cinema in the 21st century and how bold and beautiful are the women characters in Malayalam film industry are and how they act and survive the social stigma and stereotypes in their daily life. All sample films discuss the plights and problems facing women in contemporary society and pointing fingers towards the representation of women in society. The case study method is used as the sole Methodology for research. And Feminist Film theory and theory of patriarchy applied in the theoretical framework. Published with open access at www.questjournals.org The male female relationship has been a perennial issue in all genres of literature, including films. The changes in it have been reflected in films and literature too. A relationship which is defined and redefined as though finding no transcendental definition, the debate and discussion is going on. However, when the „weak‟ sex being defined in accordance with the patriarchal interest, began their protest and constantly has redefined them till the date. It had been a relationship of a struggle on the part of women, the „othering‟ of their experiences as the exotic other, as fragile, as beautiful and an object of voyeuristic pleasure that is denied freedom in the power relationship. The saying “one is not born, but becomes a woman” (Simon de Beauvoir: The Second Sex: 1949) is applicable in films as well. She has been defined only in terms of her relationship with the male characters and also in relation to the male dominant audience. However, the aspect of femininity that has been structured in films has witnessed changes over the years and various directors and film theorists tried to define the „feminine‟ in different ways. The present article tries to unravel such a change in the depiction of femininity in Malayalam films and how the woman as an object of gaze is presented and underwent changes in the patriarchal mindset of the audience in the backdrop of new wave feminism and cinema. -

There is an array of films that discusses this perennial theme overtly or covertly. Malayalam film industry has set its benchmark of new wave movements and themes. Analyzing the journey of „victim‟ from Padmarajan (Namukku Paarkkan Munthirithoppual), the pioneer of first new-wave, till Aashiq Abu (22 Female Kottayam) and Amal Neerad (Varathan) who hold the baton of second new-wave it is understood that it is also a journey of a feeble woman who falls short to protest to the one who backlashes at the assailant and overpower the male counterpart. This paper is set in the light of the theory of Laura Mulvey‟s “male gaze” and how it is represented with ascending intensity over time. Not only the female characters but also a gender relation, that is the representation of man-woman relationships, also changed a lot. -

Apart from this entire recognition, Malayalam cinemas both offbeat and commercial rarely produced women characters with significance. There are certain woman characters in Malayalam cinema which are held in esteem for being the epitome of empowered females like Clara, a prostitute with a great sense of dignity in Thoovanathumbikal and Bhadra, a vengeful peasant woman in Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu. Even though these female characters have managed to maintain cult followers and admirers in Kerala, Malayalam films still remain as the biggest purveyors of misogyny. But things appear to change after the outbreak of the maverick set of film technicians and actors came to be known as the “new generation” movement in Malayalam Cinema. Films like 22 Female Kottayam, Salt and pepper, Amen and 5 Sundarikal are lauded with applause for its undismayed rendition of intrepid, persuasive, and empowered female characters. In this, paper two films from two millennia are taken to analyse the concept of patriarchal supremacy in disguise of women empowerment. The two films in this paper, i.e. Kanmadam written and directed by Lohitadas and 22 Female Kottayam directed by Ashiq Abu have been analysed as making arduous attempts to prove themselves as films centred on women of strength but in reality upheld the ultimate victory of patriarchal consciousness. -
