Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended. -

Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists. -

Phelps was in structed to stop at Cincinnati on his way to Missouri, and purchase a press and type, for the purpose of establishing and publishing a monthly paper at Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, to be called the "Eve ning and Morning Star."-Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 481. ·w. Phelps, ifl }larmony with the instructions, went to Cincinnati, Ohio, secured the press and type and proceeded to Independence, Jack son County, Missouri, where he issued a prospectus setting forth his in tentions; extracts from which indicate the attitude of Saints relative to the publication of the message of the Restored. Gospel. The Evening and the Morning Star will be published at Independence, Jackson County, State of Missouri. As the forerunner of the night of the end, and the messenger of the day of redemption, the Star will borrow its light from sacred sources, and be devoted to the revelations of God as made known to his servants by the Holy Ghost, at sundry times since the creation of man, but more especially in these last days, for restoration of the house of Israel. -

Joseph Smith and the Kinderhook Plates (From “A REASON FOR FAITH: NAVIGATING LDS DOCTRINE & CHURCH HISTORY”, Laura Harris Hales, Editor) Don Bradley and Mark Ashurst-McGee IN THE SPRING OF 1843, A GROUP of MEN DUG INTO AN INDIAN MOUND near Kinderhook, Illinois—about seventy-five miles downriver from Nauvoo. Several feet into the mound, they found human bones and a set of six brass plates covered with inscriptions. These “Kinderhook plates” were soon brought to Nauvoo. The official History of the Church records that Joseph Smith examined the plates and translated from them. Many years later, two of the men present when the plates were uncovered revealed that the plates had been a hoax. The leader of the excavation had made the plates with some help from the village blacksmith and planted them in the mound just prior to their discovery. In 1980, the one surviving plate was examined and determined to be a modern forgery. This finding has been used to impugn Joseph’s credibility as a prophet and translator of ancient scripture. The argument, however, ignores the historical context of Joseph Smith’s personal interest in languages. A close investigation of the episode indicates that his “translation” from the Kinderhook plates was an attempt at traditional translation. He had not attempted a translation with diving aid, as he had with the Book of Mormon and the Book of Abraham, and he did not lead others to believe he had. His incorrect translation of the Kinderhook plates was simply a mistake—something he had never thought himself above. -

The Book: STORIES OF EARLY SETTLERS IN THE WILDERNESS BY JOSIAH PRIEST 1788 - 1851 It is a pleasure to present to you a wonderful story about a family coming to Delaware County many years ago. It embraces the history of the times and the many hardships that these brave settlers had to endure after the turn of the American Revolution. What makes this story so special to me is it's about my fourth great grandfather's family, Timothy Beach, a retired seaman captain who turned to farming in Connecticut before the Revolution broke out. The next course of events would forever mold my heritage by the tragedy to Timothy some years later. This book sheds light to some of these happenings. What is also special is that the author was the grandson to Timothy and much of the information supplied in his writings was by his mother, Deborah Beach Priest, Timothy's eldest child. Deborah, being the eldest child of the family, would have been a very reliable observer of the family's events following the Revolution, making her contributions to the contents of Josiah Priest's book very credible. Josiah was born the year after Timothy's sudden death and I am sure additional sources to his book came from his grandmother and Deborah's sibling, many of whom lived in Franklin, New York. This Beach family story is in several parts. One illustrates the early scouting for their new farmland by Timothy and his eldest son, Richard who was about 10 years old at the time. They set out in the Spring of 1784 and headed to an area near Catskill, New York. -

The Better Angels
Roundtable: The Better Angels Whenever there is a new film about Abraham Lincoln, it is a major event for Lincoln scholars as well as the general public. Thus, when the publicity department for The Better Angels contacted me last fall and offered to send some pre-release copies I jumped at the chance. I decided to send them to four scholars of different backgrounds to see how each of them interpreted the film, and I could not be more pleased with the results. William E. Bartelt contributes his experi- ence as the leading scholar on Lincoln’s Indiana years as well as his direct involvement with the film, Jackie Hogan offers the perspec- tive of a sociologist interested in Lincoln’s legacy and the way he is represented in popular culture, Megan Kate Nelson brings her usual wit and familiarity with cultural history to bear, and John Stauffer uses his vast knowledge of American art and culture to offer a deep analysis of the film’s artistic and religious resonances. I hope you enjoy this new feature, and perhaps we can try it again for future Lincoln films. Christian McWhirter, Editor The Making of The Better Angels WILLIAM E. BARTELT Early in 2009 I received a call from the Indiana Film Commission seeking permission to give my contact information to film producers A. J. Edwards and Nick Gonda. The pair had read my recent book on Lincoln’s youth and wanted to discuss their idea for a film covering a brief period of Abraham Lincoln’s life in Indiana. My subsequent conversations with the pair revealed that although Lincoln lived more than thirteen years in Indiana, their film would represent about four years of his life—ages eight to eleven or twelve—and would explore relationships between Lincoln and both his birth mother and his stepmother. -

Is the Mormon star KOLOB a location for “Thou Fount of Every Blessing?” SATAN is certainly a master at using MUSIC to sugar-coat heresy and introduce it into the minds of those who move in professing Christian circles. A lovely hymn that I have sung over my years as a Christian is ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’. So, perhaps you’re wondering to yourself, what’s this ‘If You Could Hie to Kolob’. Well it relates to something that is foreign to the original hymn but that has been inserted into the rendition. Perhaps like me you would need to find out what ‘hie’ means’, well it means ‘go quickly’. Then secondly you might wonder what is this ‘KOLOB’ that you might want to ‘hie’ to. Let me quote from pages 32-33 of ‘Mormons Answered Verse by Verse’ by David Reed and John Farkas. Just by way of additional help, Mormonism recognises 4 authoritative books, The Book of Mormon, The Bible, Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. This last one is actually a collection of smaller writings such as ‘The Book of Moses’ and ‘The Book of Abraham’. Keeping that in mind let’s see what we can we learn about KOLOB? Mr Reed and Mr Farkas wrote – ‘The “Book of Abraham” is unique in that it features three cuts or facsimiles of the Egyptian papyrus from which Joseph Smith claimed he “translated” it… It is described as “The writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, called the “Book of Abraham”, written by his own hand upon papyrus”. -

In the early seventeenth century, natural philosophers began speculating on the idea of multiple world systems. By the eighteenth century, Protestant evangelicals absorbed the idea into their Natural Theology. For them nature contained clear and compelling evidence of God's existence, sub- stantiating their own Christian beliefs and countering religious skepticism (Westfall 1958; Hovenkamp 1978). Joseph used the concept quite differently, though never defensively. Theologically he related man, God, and the uni- verse ; religiously, his message was millenarian and directed toward eschatologi- cal issues. On careful examination, these complex issues suggest that the en- vironmental thesis — the view that one's cultural matrix is entirely sufficient to account for the emergence of a coherent set of ideas or conventions — does not provide a wholly adequate explanation of the style and structure of restora- tionist pluralism. In addition to examining the astronomical pluralism in Joseph's writings, this essay will assess the merits of the environmental thesis without suggesting that Joseph Smith as a religious leader must always be seen either as a prophet or as a charlatan, a dichotomy which has prevented useful and productive understanding of an enigmatic character.
