It is in the car, the cinema, on television, in the doctor’s office, in the home, on the other end of the phone; it really is everywhere. Music arguably is a large part of culture and as such, has the ability to construct social realities. In hopes to understand how media constructs the image of the female, a contextual analysis was performed on the lyrics of the top twenty-five country and pop songs according to Billboard.com. This was done using Grounded Theory through the employment of coding. Results showed that although country and pop music depict women in a slightly different manner, they both for the most part depict women in traditional gender roles. Furthermore, the propitiation and adherence to traditional gender roles sustain and conciliate patriarchy. Therefore the depictions of women in the music lyrics were then analyzed as processes of patriarchy.

In particular, young Americans have been shown to spend an average of more than five hours per day exposed to a variety of media channels. This chapter examines the role of entertainment media in encouraging or discouraging tobacco use, including aspects such as n Channels of media exposure, particularly for children n Studies performed on tobacco use in the movie industry, ranging from trends in tobacco prevalence by movie type to issues such as how tobacco use is depicted, not portraying the health consequences of smoking, and brand-specific exposure n Studies examining the influence of smoking in the movies on the social attitudes and behaviors surrounding smoking n A summary of research on the portrayal of tobacco use in other media channels, such as television, music, magazines, and the Internet n Current and future strategies for reducing public exposure to tobacco use in entertainment media, including policy interventions, efforts at industry self-regulation, and advocacy efforts aimed at both the public and the entertainment industry The total weight of evidence from cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental studies indicates a causal relationship between exposure to movie smoking depictions and youth smoking initiation.     SOMEDAY: “WOULDN’T IT BE NICE” by JESSICA SAWREY (Under the Direction of NATHANIEL KOHN) ABSTRACT What are love, happiness, and youth? Can a song help answer these questions? This thesis explores the connection between the consumption of popular music and the process of performing my self(s), my realities, my desires. Using the work of Roland Barthes, Simon Frith, Richard Schechner, Hélène Cixous and others, this autoethnographic textual performance explores how popular music, with its embodied hegemonic meta-narratives and mechanisms of social control, becomes somehow necessary, even desirable, to the process of performing my everyday life.
