I did for a while the other day but popped back in since I have so many authors and friends I met on online communities there. It's really effective. Still, I do recommend this book to anyone who's even remotely curious about it. The writing that feels truest to life describes Valenti feeling sapped of it. West also goes into debating Jim Norton on Totally Biased about rape jokes in comedy. But it's in the more serious parts of the book that its true value is revealed. Find a Library. Yet, in between some of this almost-startling-for-her-age-wisdom, there is also name-dropping, name-dropping, name- dropping, my Volvo my Volvo, my Volvo Her Volvo is mentioned frequently. I once spent a tearful eight-hour flight from Oslo to Seattle convinced I could feel my femurs splintering like candy canes. I'm ready to donate. I'm glad she acknowledged the limitations of the "punching up" argument, and instead offered an interesting take on how a person can successfully tell a rape joke without just being a misogynistic asshole. I had also never heard of the author before reading it though I now realize I had actually read a couple of her articles in the past. Given the high level of influence Savage wields among his followers, that's no small thing. Really thought provoking and anger inducing but still very funny. Admittedly, the book doesn't sustain this level of LOLs throughout—given the topics Lindy takes on, that would be impossible. And, not to be rude, but. A book of completely random notes, everything from owning a vagina to obscure name-dropping of p Whoa. Shrill seemed like an obvious book for this "waiting" strategy—although I was aware that Lindy West was a prominent young feminist writer, I knew very little else about her and could barely even remember where I'd seen her work before I guessed maybe Jezebel , and I turned out to be right about that. But as an overweight fat woman and feeling discouraged lately, I decided to check out a couple of fat-positive books from my library. Let's talk books, shall we? Want to Read saving…. West has somehow stayed open and vulnerable in the face of constant attack, abuse that would turn a lot of people into a brittle shell, instead of a warm, capacious and funny writer. The pain makes your teeth ache. I will end this review with a quote from the end of the book, a snippet of West's final rallying cry for us all: "I think the most important thing I do in my professional life today is delivering public, impermeable "no"s and sticking to them. People we're doxxing, swatting, and threatening to murder and rape women and people would shrug and go free speech and grow a thicker skin. When you raise every women to believe that we are insignificant, that we are broken, that we are sick, that the only cure is starvation and restraint and smallness; when you pit women against one another, keep a shackled by shame and hunger, obsessing over our flaws rather than our power and potential; when you leverage all of that to sap our money and our time—that moves the rudder of the world. West doesn't really give descriptions of places much, but the things she says resonates. You believe in my subjugation; I don't have to be nice to you. There are a lot of awesome-looking feminist books coming out in , and although I have longed to add all of them to my collection immediately, I vowed to wait for the paperback for most of them for the sake of my wallet. Perhaps most significantly, her writing and subsequent "This American Life" piece about a horrible Twitter troll who had assumed the online persona of her recently deceased father actually convinced Twitter to address the issue of trolls and do something about it—and other websites followed suit. My flight was only three hours, but by the end, I wanted to cry because I had tried to remain perfectly still with hunched shoulders to allow those next to me as much room as possible. In Slate , Nora Caplan-Bricker described West's writing as "both sharp-toothed and fluid as it rips into period stigma and abortion stigma, sexism and fat-shaming. A book of completely random notes, everything from owning a vagina to obscure name-dropping of people in the stand-up comedy scene in Seattle to internet trolls. She's better than me, my family motto is "God forgives, we don't forget". I hope lots of people, male and female, read this book, and that it gives all of its readers the courage to speak our minds, at least sometimes, politely, empathetically, and compassionately. I cracked up a few times out loud and had to explain while I was at the hair dresser what was I reading that was so funny. But, unlike Lindy West, it makes me sad. Leave this field empty. That this vitriol can be interpreted as humor becomes hard to understand for those of us who have different, and some of us who may have had far harder luck, health, life experiences and cultural contexts of our own.

Gelms As our digital environments—in their inhabitants, communities, and cultures—have evolved, harassment, unfortunately, has become the status quo on the internet (Duggan, 2014 & 2017; Jane, 2014b). Harassment is an issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color (Citron, 2014; Mantilla, 2015), LGBTQIA+ women (Herring et al., 2002; Warzel, 2016), and women who engage in social justice, civil rights, and feminist discourses (Cole, 2015; Davies, 2015; Jane, 2014a). Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect.

But a healthy version of a fat girl, because she is dancing her ass off for two hours.” —Bernard Telsey, casting director[1] Introduction Casting director Craig Burns worked on Broadway’s Hairspray (2002) from its first workshops, and it remains his favorite production because of the opportunity to cast people who “weren’t normally considered for leads in a show, and now all of a sudden these girls are getting a chance because we need a fat girl. There was so much joy in that.”[2] Katrina Rose Dideriksen was one such woman given the chance to play Hairspray’s Tracy Turnblad on Broadway and on tour. She remembered feeling excited to play Tracy because she “is the ingénue, she wins the guy, she saves the day . she’s funny and she’s lovable and all those things, but in this very real-girl way.” Dideriksen then noticed a “weight clause” in her contract: “It was really this underlying pinch to realize that subconsciously I was being told I was still wrong for it, that there was something I had to fix. With respect to any given issue, speech was scarce, and limited to a few newspapers, pamphlets or magazines. The law was embedded, therefore, with the presumption that the greatest threat to free speech was direct punishment of speakers by government. Today, in the internet and social media age, it is no longer speech that is scarce—rather, it is the attention of listeners. And those who seek to control speech use new methods that rely on the weaponization of speech itself, such as the deployment of “troll armies,” the fabrication of news, or “flooding” tac- tics.
