JA BizTown®

Cox (DJ) Remain in your business until after the National Anthem. Use Staff Meeting #1 to review your checkbook and read through your Job Folder. Business Start-Up: Do not operate the sound board until given permission by a JA Staff Member.

 Turn to Page 3 in your Job Folder and read “Tips for a Successful Broadcast”. It’s important to follow these tips!

 A JA BizTown staff member will meet with you and give you directions on how to operate the sound board & computer.

 Your goal is to be ready to go “On-the-Air” after you have completed writing down 20 on your “Radio Play List”.

Creating a “Radio Play List”:

 Review the Radio Library on your computer.

 Prepare your “Radio Play List” (see clipboard). You will select 20 songs to play and they are listed in alphabetical order by Title on the computer.

 Be sure to write neatly, as customers will use your “Play List” to make song requests.

Creating a “Computer Play List”:

1. Once you have completed the “Radio Play List” on paper, you can prepare a Play List on the computer, if you choose.

2. Click and drag your selected song titles to the Today’s Play List pane on the right-hand side of your computer screen. These songs will remain there throughout the day.

3. To play a song, double-click on the song title in Today’s Play List. At the end of the song, click “STOP” or the next song will begin playing. If a song is playing, you can click “Pause” anytime an announcement needs to be made.

4. You can play the songs in any order that you want but no more than twice during the day.

Song Requests:

 Customers can purchase a “Song Request ” from the list of songs on your “Play List” for $1.00.

 Give them the “Song Request Sheet” (see clipboard) to complete and accept their personal check (no cash) for payment. Be sure the customer’s check is entered into the POS” (Point of Sale) computer! (See POS Instructions)

 Make sure all customer checks are given to your CFO to deposit.

 Put a check mark in the “Played” column on the “Song Request Sheet” after you have played the customer’s song request. Be sure to keep track!

 Schedule all song requests into your broadcast.

 Use “chatter” anytime music is not playing to avoid “dead air.” Note: Chatter includes talking about the radio station, your school, the weather, JA BizTown activities, special promotions, etc.

Radio Advertisements & News Reports

1. Your Ad Executive will bring you radio ads from each business to be broadcast.

2. Review each ad before you read it over the air — you don’t want to “stumble” over any words. Be sure to read them with enthusiasm!

3. It is your responsibility to make sure all ads are read before the end of your broadcast time! Your Ad Executive can assist you, if needed.

4. Your News Reporter will bring news stories to be aired.

5. Ask the News Reporter to read the stories or have an “on-the-air” conversa- tion with the Reporter about news events. (News Reporters can use the “Guest ”)

Additional Responsibilities

 Keep sound levels at the appropriate settings!

 Assist with clean-up at the end of the day.

Tips for a Successful Broadcast

 When on the air, be sure to speak slowly, clearly, loudly and directly into the microphone.

 Make sure the volume controls are positioned at the correct places when playing music or speaking on the microphone.

 Wait until a song is over before reading ads or a newscast.

 Make sure your broadcast is full of variety. For example: a. You may introduce a song by telling the name of the artist, the name of the song or both.

b. You may play two songs and then tell what the song titles and who the artists were after both songs have played.

. c. Play a song, then read an ad or news story, then play another song or have “chatter time”.

 Be sure to carefully read over all ads before reading them on the air.

 Only COX employees may operate the sound board and radio equipment. Customers are not allowed to make announcements or use the microphone or select songs from the computer.
