At the end of this catalogue is a short list of World War II era maps from Los Angeles Times artist Charles Owens, one of several mapmakers of that era who by means of their dramatic cartographic style alerted the American general public to the new realities of “aviation age” warfare.

Mt. McKinley Tourist & Transportation Co. 1937. Whimiscal map by Harrison Lucas showing wildlife and activities found at Denali Mt. McKinley National Park. The lower margin features a chart comparing the height of other mountains such as Matterhorn and Mt. Rainier. On the verso is information on Hunting and Fishing and Park Trips. WorldCat lists this at two libraries in the United States. $145

Color bird's eye view pictorial map, sheet size 21 3/4 x 34 inches, originally folded as issued, now professionally mounted on linen. Very good condition. Metropolitan Surveys. Los Angeles. 1932. A handsome image of "the wonder city of America" seen at a somewhat skewed bird's eye view perspective: a lightly populated Los Angeles area stretching from Santa Monica at the left edge of the map to Long Beach at the lower right, with the inland extremes marked by the University of Los Angeles and Westwood Village, Hollywood, Occidental College, Altadena and Montebello. Within this area important buildings are marked together with a very large number of oil fields, arable land etc. There is an extensive index in a decorative scroll at lower right which includes a long list of clubs, education establishments, businesses (Chrysler Factory), oil fields etc and 17 movie stars homes. An image of the Goodyear balloon and a propeller plane frame the map. $1650

Color pictorial map (lithograph), image 25 7/8 x 32 1/4 inches on sheet 27 x 34 inches. Very good condition. Harrison Godwin. San Francisco. 1927. A huge color lithographed pictorial map by Harrison Godwin depicting San Francisco from the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay, enlivened by comic figures capturing the life of the city. Districts include the Sunset, Richmond, Hayes Valley, Mission, Portrero and downtown districts. There are pictographs

Plaques list "Principal Down Town Theaters", "Principal Down Town Banks", and along the lower edge are cartoon images of historical events, etc. At upper left the image of an aeroplane commemorates the "First Successful Aeroplane Flight San Francisco to Honolulu June 28th 1927" and the "Dole Air Race San Francisco to Honolulu Aug. 16th 1927". In the following year Godwin produced a similarly informative and engaging Map of Hollywood. $2850

An extraordinarily whimsical treatment of Japan's imperialist aspirations... The map, published by the Nichinichi newspaper company, shows the products of the countries of East Asia in little pictographs. At lower right is an inset table graphing trade with China, including steel, petroleum, rice, pigments and dyes, wood products etc. On the verso is text "news at a glance" with information on the provinces of China and of Manchuria. $950

[53393] ENGLAND - LONDON) Lee, Kerry (illus). London The Bastion of Liberty. Color pictographic / pictorial map poster, 39 1/2 x 49 inches, professionally mounted to linen backing. Chromoworks, Limited. London. Ca. 1946. This attractive pictorial map by artist Kerry Lee dates from the period 1945 to 1948. It is a post World War II celebration of London and the British spirit with Winston Churchill's words in the banner at upper right: "We would rather see London in ruins and ashes than that it should be tamely and abjectly enslaved," with evident reference to the fall of Paris. It was issued in different sizes over the years (this being the largest and the earliest; this printing also has a slightly glossy print quality. $1150

Black and white pictographic / pictorial map, sheet size 23 1/2 x 32 3/4 inches, folding as issued into color pictorial card folder, 8 x 4 3/8 inches. With original mailing envelope. Byrel W. Burgess. 1954. Humorous map of Frankfurt, Germany, for members of the American forces stationed in Germany, highlighting the many aspects of life in the city and poking fun at much of it. There are places to find beer and sausages, historical and cultural sites, and more. Keeping things in perspective a tiny outline of Chicago appears in the upper right corner with references to the Rockies, Indian Territory etc. $165

Metal hanging strips to upper and lower edge as issued. Light dampstaining to left margin, image in very good, bright condition. Colortext Publications Chicago. 1938. A fascinating bird's eye view of the city with ninety four businesses / buildings numbered on the map and identified in the legend at lower left. Many more are named on the map. The more significant buildings are rendered in detail providing a magnificent account of the city just before World War II. The city is a hub of activity: a plane flies at upper left, two trains head into the city from the northwest and ships ply Lake Michigan. The map is artistically rendered in lithography by C.L. Hawkins. DePaul University Library in Chicago is the only holding library listed on WorldCat. $2750

Text in lower decorative insert discusses India's Economic Future: Decorative vignettes and banners highlight the rich resources of the country. India is depicted in pre-Partition form, suggesting that it was published shortly after the end of World War II. Color map, 18 x 26 inches on sheet 22 x 30 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Browning at paper edge, light discoloration in margins now scarcely visible, very good condition with bright coloration. Coulton Waugh. 1930. A handsome map in the old world style of Colton Waugh with impressive cartouche at centre and decorative borders in a wood-cut style. This border features portraits of six sailing ships with decorative

sea-related designs. The map is filled with pictographs marking towns and many textual notes of historic interest. A map that celebrates the sea-faring history of this beautiful area. OCLC lists holdings in two US libraries (Buffalo and Boston Public Library). The map was issued in different sizes, colored and uncolored. This is a beautiful example of the larger version, colored as issued. $1650

A handsome bird's eye view style color pictorial map of the campus at Harvard University "dedicated to the Graduates of Harvard University in Commemoration of the Tercentenary of its founding." At upper right the Arms of the Houses are depicted, and in the upper left vignette illustrations of Harvard College in 1726 and of John Harvard, Founder. The buildings on the Harvard campus at the time are pictured in a bird's eye view style; note that Leverett Towers at lower right of the image was opened in 1960. The map is marked copyright 1959, and Alva Scott Garfield obviously included these landmarks that were appearing on the campus. There is much historical information about events and places - particularly sports - and an inset illustration: "Harvard College During the Revolution" (From an engraving by Paul Revere.) A decorative, amusing and informative pictorial commemoration of this venerable campus some 50 plus years ago. $325

An imposing poster of Massachusetts by Elizabeth Shurtleff, highlighting the history of the state with colorful illustrations of places, people and events from colony days, both on the map and in the decorative border. At the left and right edges are the arms of the educational institutions of the state. Particularly bold and attractive are the images of the many sailing boats offshore. $950

[52934] MEXICO - MEXICO CITY) Merida, Carlos (mapmaker). Map of Mexico City and Valley. Color pictographic / pictorial street map, 19 3/4 x 25 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 26 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Frances Toor Studios. Mexico. 1935. Brightly colored pictorial map designed by the Guatemalan artist Carlos Merida (1891-1984) showing a street plan of central Mexico City with pictographs of many buildings and a numbered "Business Directory" of 21 places in the cartouche, referencing numbers on the map. A note under the map states that "the motifs of the border consist of Aztec and colonial symbols of the names of suburban places." At the lower centre of the map is an inset map of the valley surrounding Mexico City. A wonderful example of the "translation" of the twentieth century decorative map that MacDonald Gill pioneered, here with a Hispanic sensibility. $750

This humorous map - with much play on gambling - extends from Reno at the upper right corner to Pyramid Park, Echo Lake and Lake Tahoe airport at lower left. One of the more uncommon of the Lindgren Brothers maps. $450

A brightly colored view of the places and activities of the White Mountains, with major buildings pictured in bird's eye view style. At left is Sunset Hill House, at centre is Crawford House Club, at right the Thorn Mountain Ski School; along the upper edge are pictured the Mountain View House, Spaulding Inn, The Waumbek, Ravine House, Mt. Hayes and Philbrook Farm Inn. Along the lower edge are Mt Moosilauki, Mt. Tecumseh and the Presidential Inn in Conway. Illustrations of mountains, skiing, swimming, inns, clubs, shops and other places and activities of interest. Major mountains and buildings are named, making this a really great map for someone who knows the area. $375

Two 1 1/2 inch tears to left edge and 3 inch tear to mid right edge (all minimized by linen backing), pinholes in each corner and upper/lower edge. No date. Ca. 1960s? A pleasing map of this beautiful "playground of the rich" with black and white pen sketches illustrating the activities and attractions of the area. At right is an inset pictorial map of "Main St. East Hampton" with many of the historic buildings detailed; at left is a diagrammatic map of "Sag Harbor." $475

Pictographic / pictorial map with handcolor, 9 1/4 x 10 inches on sheet size 12 1/4 x 14 inches. On a thick paper, map is evenly toned with overall light creasing, 1/4 inch chip to upper left edge , two long tears to lower edge and a few short tears to right edge (all outside map area). The Villager. New York. Copyright 1934. A handsome map of Greenwich Village by E. L. Harper with tiny illustrations under a decorative title banner of over fifty churches, museums, and other important buildings. No listings in WorldCat. $495

[53536] NEW YORK - MANHATTAN - GREENWICH VILLAGE) Map of Greenwich Village made for The Whitney Studio Club. Color pictorial map / bird's eye view, sheet size 25 1/4 x 32 inches. Professionally mounted on linen Whitney Studio Club. New York. No date. Ca. 1920. A quite extraordinary testament to the Bohemian and artistic vitality of Greenwich Village in the 1920s, the color map is a bird's eye view of the Village seen through puffy clouds, which are the thematic link to the black and white pictorial border featuring buildings (with smoking chimneys) at the lower edge and a sky with planes and blimps in the upper border. The Whitney Studio Club (1918–28) was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a patron of the arts and herself a sculptor, and evolved into the Whitney Museum of American Art. Apart from the detailed view of the buildings of Greenwich Village, the map is liberally sprinkled with whimsical touches. Around the cartouche are winged faces, apparently portraits of the artists; there is what might be interpreted as a god of the future carrying a tray of buildings and a barrel of transportation options; and the most extraordinary hybrid of a mermaid and a seamonster. The modern architectural buildings of New York's financial district are prominently featured, including the Stock Exchange, banks, the Fred F. French building, sixty Wall Tower, the Woolworth Building and City Hall. Images in the corners show artistic interpretations: "Peter Minuit Bought 'Manna-hatin' in 1626"; Native American Indians; a Revolutionary War couple; and a modernistic version of the Statue of Liberty. $1850

An uncommon pictorial map of Manhattan. The decorative title cartouche describes the map as "A picture map of New York old and new. Quaint reminders of its early days, highlights in its history and growth, landmarks of its renown and glory. A modern metropolis in the making pictorially presented for the man who learns by looking." On either side of the map are a border of images of events and landmarks new and old including one of a plane commemorating Lindbergh's New York to Paris flight, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square. $2350

Black and white map, 24 x 19 3/4 inches on sheet size 25 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches, originally folding into paper covers (6 x 3 1/4 inches), now professionally mounted on linen backing. Light wear to some folds, overall very good condition. Knowlson & Muller. Brooklyn. No date. Ca. 1903. On the map area names are noted, along with geographical features such as Points, Ports, and beacons. On the back cover of the paper wrappers is a list of three fishing maps, of City Island Waters, Staten Island Waters and Jamaica Bay. The inside cover of the wrappers gives details on places to fish in Staten Island Waters: "There is hardly a foot of the Staten Island shore along which some fishing may not be obtained..." It is advertised on page 88 of The Fisherman's Friend 1903 edition. There are records for two other Knowlson & Muller publications on WorldCat, one, "Fishing around New York" with a copyright date of 1909 and the other "Deep Sea Fishing Grounds, Fire Island to Barnegat" with a copyright date of 1915. No record was located for the Staten Island map on WorldCat. $950

[53150] NEW ZEALAND) Charles Haines Advertising Agency (designed by). Fun Map of New Zealand. Wonderland of the Pacific. Unspoiled Land of Beauty. Color pictographic / pictorial map, 29 x 30 inches on sheet size 30 x 20 inches, folding to pamphlet 7 1/2 x 10 inches, black and white photo illustrations and text on verso. Faint travel agency stamp to front cover, light soiling to back cover, tiny split at upper centrefold not affecting the image. Map in very good condition. New Zealand Government Tourist and Publicity Department. No date. Ca. 1940.

An uncommon and colorful map of New Zealand in the comic pictorial style of illustrators such as Ruth Taylor White, this designed by The Charles Haines Advtg. Agency Ltd. in Wellington. The artist, Kerry Lee, has drawn himself and his dog in at the lower right corner of the central map area. $750

An uncommon and visually appealing map poster "done in the old style" with decorative galleons and sea monsters and an elaborate compass rose. Southern Pacific's Shasta Route, Overland Route, Golden State Route and Sunset Route are marked, "following the trails of the pioneers, they are the best natural routes to the land of scenery and romance." The left and right borders are composed of vignette illustrations of historical events starting with "1862 President Lincoln signs Pacific Railway Act" to "Today Southern Pacific still building and serving." Four vignette illustrations along the upper edge relate to the four routes. The railroad runs as far south as Mexico City. David Rumsey attributes the map design to J.E.Patterson of Patterson & Sullivan, a San Francisco art firm. WorldCat shows four library holdings in the United States. $1385

This visually striking, colorful map of the United States features images of the wide variety of agricultural product with a key at right numbering 25 products from cattle to sugar cane to peanuts to olives. A promotional pamphlet produced by Armour and Company, the verso features a comprehensive history of the meat packing industry under the title: "Nation's Ever-growing Food Problem has been met by Packing Industry." Conjuring the America of almost a century ago, the quote at upper right of the map concludes "Because nearly all industries depend on agriculture, the prosperity of the entire nation is inseparably linked with the marketing of meat and other animal products through the packing industry." $425

Color lithographic poster / pictorial map, 33 3/4 x 52 1/2 inches on sheet 35 x 53 inches, folded as issued. Very good condition. The Council Against Intolerance in America. 1940. A fascinating map by Emma Bourne produced as a means of heightening awareness of the strengths of cultural diversity in the US, when there was considerable vocal intolerance to immigrants and minorities and immigration. At lower right, with a portrait of a North American Indian, is the statement "With the exception of the Indian all Americans or their fore-fathers came here from other countries. This map shows where they live, what they do, and what their religion is." The map was produced just before the US entered World War II, when the isolationist sentiment was strong and celebrates the origins of the population of the United States (in a reflection of the times south and central America is listed as one category, the European countries are individually named and there is a category "negro"). There are two legends listing the origin of Americans (one specifically for the Northeast) with approximately 31 different countries or areas listed. At the lower left corner is an "honor roll" of immigrants who achieved fame in the fields of literature, science, industry and the arts including Ernest Hemingway, Charles William Mayo, J.P. Morgan, Marian Anderson, and Greta Garbo. Colorful banners describing the ethnic make up are woven through pictures depicting the dominant agricultural or industrial products of the regions. $1150

Notable authors' names are listed under many cities around the country - sparsely in the West (with the exception of San Francisco) and needing a large balloon within the inset map of Massachusetts at upper right for the names of authors located in Boston and environs. Along the upper and lower borders are portraits of authors with birth/death years. This beautiful and compelling map of America's great literary heritage was prominently featured in the Library of Congress map exhibit "The Language of the Land." No date of death is given for Henry van Dyke, who died in 1933. $1150

An impressively sized and beautifully designed map of the United States by Earl Purdy highlighting many of the major projects in the form of buildings and infrastructure improvements financed by the U.S. Government Federal Public Works Administration. Projects are highlighted in the border's black and white wood-cut-like illustrations and in the many colorful pictographs scattered across the map. The text at lower left, titled "Serving the People," notes "In picture and legend, this map indicates how the Federal Public Works Administration has aided local communities to rebuild the United States....As permanent national assets they are dedicated to the service of the American public." The colorful cartouche at lower right particularly evokes the art of the era. $2250

A later edition of this map was issued in conjunction with the Pullman Company. $475

This poster was printed for the 62nd Imperial Council Session of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (now Shriners International) held in Seattle held in Seattle July 13 to 16, 1936. In this printing, distributed after the meeting had taken place, the second and fourth lines of the cartouche text (with "of 1936" and name of the event) have been printed over. "Copyright 1936 by the Farwest Lithograph & Printing Co., Seattle" is printed under title. The map is filled with information pictorially conveyed highlighting the places to visit and activities to enjoy, with little figures of Shriners pictured clam digging, skiing etc. While focused on Washington state west of the Cascade mountains, Portland and Mt Hood are featured at the lower edge of the map. $650

An historical map published under the auspices of the Oshkosh Museum, with vignette illustrations of historical events, inhabitants and wildlife of the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin. It is bordered by a chronological series of illustrations of key events that helped shape the region, and a decorative outer border of plants of the area. The scale is approximately 3/4 inch to 5 miles. An uncommon map which WorldCat lists as being held in two libraries in Wisconsin. $850

COLLECTION OF CHARLES OWENS’ WORLD WAR II “AVIATION AGE” MAPS Beginning in the 1920s, Los Angeles Times artist Charles Owens produced graphically appealing maps of California and places beyond inspired, in great measure, by the emerging culture of West Coast aviation. Aircraft, together with automobiles and the impact of film on popular culture were symptomatic of a faster, more interrelated emerging world. During the time of American involvement in World War II, Owens harnessed this sensibility to interpret for the American public the geopolitical realities of global warfare through colorful, dramatic cartographic work such as the examples below.
