Il existe 300 espèces d’Ascalaphidés dans le monde, une douzaine seulement réside dans la France méridionale. Leur aspect peut être considéré comme intermédiaire entre des Libellules et des Papillons, ce qui leur donne un charme tout particulier. Au repos, ils tiennent leurs ailes en toit, comme les Cigales. Citizen science is growing as a field of research with contributions from diverse disci- plines, promoting innovation in science, society, and policy. Citizen science platforms (i.e., iNat, https://www.inaturalist.org/) and capacity-building programmes foster the visibility of projects and establish networks for knowledge exchange within and among members of the citizen sci- ence community. Several recent events of citizen science in Italy (mainly by means of bioblitzes) have given a new perspective to the knowledge of Neuropterida in Italy. Introduction As a scientist, I have continuously been involved in training activities and in engag- ing the public in scientific subjects. Entomology, but more generally the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and social commitment have always been two sectors I have walked together. For this reason, one of the first objectives that I gave myself in the study of Neuropterida was to create a web site to disseminate information to an Italian audience: this web site (URL: http://neurotteri.casaccia.enea.it/), online since 2000, has been updated to 03.viii.2018. September 1997 Specimens representing 19 orders and 169 arthropod families (mostly insects) were collected from greenleaf manzanita brushfields in northeastern California and identified to species whenever possible. More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. Colorado Insect of Interest Wasp Mantidfly Scientific Name: Climaciella brunnea (Say) Order: Neuroptera (Lacewings, Antlions, Snakeflies, Dobsonflies and Relatives) Family: Mantispidae (Mantidflies) Figure 1. Wasp mantidfly female Identification and Descriptive Features: The wasp mantidfly is a strong mimic of some of the native paper wasps (Polistes spp.). The body is of similar size, generally of the same brown coloration with yellow band markings, and the wings are dusky. However, it is readily distinguishable by the narrow prothorax and grasping forelegs, reminiscent of a mantid. Distribution in Colorado: Although uncommon, the wasp mantidfly is widely distributed in the state, having been recovered from several areas of eastern Colorado as well as the West Slope counties along the Utah border. It likely can be found where ever the large wolf spider hosts of the larvae occur. Life History and Habits: Wasp mantidfly adults emerge in late spring and fly to trees and shrubs Figure 2. The first stage larvae that hatch remain on the leaves and wait for a passing spider, to which they readily attach. Large wolf spiders are the most common hosts for mantidfly larvae, which may feed a bit on the blood of the spider during the first instar. However, further development occurs upon the spider’s eggs. When eggs are laid the mantidfly larva migrates to the eggs before the egg sac is covered with silk. -

Faton J.-M. © Libelloides longicornis Position systématique Classe : Insecta Ordre : Neuroptera Famille : Ascalaphidae Présentation générale du groupe taxonomique Bien que ressemblant vaguement aux libellules, les Ascalaphes (famille des Ascalaphidae) figurent dans l’ordre des Névroptères, au même titre que les fourmilions (Myrmeleonidae) et les chrysopes (Chrysopidae), caractérisés entre autres par l’appareil buccal particulier des larves et de leurs ailes membraneuses ornées de fortes nervures. A l'état larvaire mais partiellement comme adultes aussi, les Névroptères se nourrissent d'insectes et d'acariens. De ce fait, ils jouent un rôle non négligeable dans la prédation de populations d'insectes parasites des cultures. Les larves sont caractérisées par leurs robustes pinces buccales. La famille des Ascalaphidae comporte 300 espèces dans le monde, mais une quinzaine seulement existerait en France (quelques espèces sont à confirmer). Parmi elles, seules trois espèces s’étendent au- delà du sud de la France : Libelloides longicornis , Libelloides coccajus et Libelloides lacteus . L’espèce la plus répandue en France est Libelloides longicornis , bien reconnaissable à ses nervures alaires jaunes. C’est la seule espèce présente dans la région. Eléments de biologie et d’écologie Les Ascalaphes se reconnaissent facilement parmi les autres Névroptères. Ce sont des insectes assez grands, comme les Myrmeleontidae, mais qui possèdent des antennes très longues et dilatées à leur extrémité en palette ou massue. La tête et le thorax sont très velus, et surtout leurs ailes sont généralement très colorées (fond jaune soufre ou laiteux) : ces insectes sont ainsi les seuls, au sein de cet ordre, à arborer des couleurs vives sur leurs ailes. -

It is my pleasure and honor to present an homage to my wife, Ulrike Aspöck, to celebrate the occasion of her 70th birthday (12 July 2011) and to commemorate almost 50 years of inspiring and fruitful scientific cooperation. On hand of many tables, lists and photographs, this article documents and illustrates aspects of her personal life, academic career and scientific achievements, in particular her merits in Neuropteridan research. Vorbemerkung Es ist ungewöhnlich und mag vielleicht sogar befremden, dass der Ehemann einer Wissenschaftlerin öffentlich und in einer Fachzeitschrift eine Hommage zum 70. Geburtstag seiner Frau schreibt, doch die Rechtfertigung ergibt sich durch den Hinweis, dass die bisher über 48 Jahre dauernde Ehe zugleich durch 48 Jahre ununterbrochener und bis heute unvermindert anhaltender intensiver gemeinsamer wissenschaftlicher Arbeit geprägt ist und dass daher niemand auch nur annähernd so sehr mit dem Leben und dem wissenschaftlichen Werk von Ulrike Aspöck vertraut sein kann, wie ich. Das bedeutet natürlich, dass die Darstellung auch viel Autobiographisches enthält. Ich kann nur bitten, mir zu glauben, dass nicht der Wunsch nach Selbstdarstellung diesen Aufsatz prägt, sondern das Bemühen, den wissenschaftlichen Werdegang einer außerge- wöhnlichen, hervorragenden österreichischen Entomologin darzustellen und damit zugleich ein Stück Geschichte der Neuropterologie und der österreichischen Entomologie zu dokumentieren – so wie ich es im Zusammenhang mit der Darstellung der Biographie und des wissenschaftlichen Werkes anderer Personen schon oft getan habe. -

Diploid male chromosome numbers are listed for 37 species, 21 gen- era from 9 subfamilies of the antlions as well as for seven species and five genera of the owlfly subfamily Asca- laphinae. The list includes data on five species whose karyotypes were studied in the present work.
