Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. 20560 In his revision of the Anerastiinae (auctorum), Shaffer (1968) showed that this subfamily, which had been separated by Ragonot (1886) from the Phycitinae on the basis of a single reduction character, loss or ex treme reduction of the tongue, was not monophyletic. On the basis of the genitalia, he showed that some genera should remain separate from the Phycitinae and be treated under the subfamily name Peoriinae, a name previously used in a much broader sense by Hulst (1890). The remainder of the Anerastiinae, including the genus Anerastia Hubner, were considered by Shaffer to belong to the Phycitinae. For lack of sufficient information or material Shaffer left unplaced a few genera and species which he discussed briefly at the end of his revision. These are taxa that had not been treated by Heinrich (1956) because he thought that they were Anerastiinae and thus not within the scope of his revision of the Phycitinae. The present paper offers a redescription of three of these unplaced species, namely Altoona ardi fer ella Hulst, Aurora nigromaculella Hulst, and Parramatta placidella Barnes & McDunnough, as well as descriptions of seven new species. We were able to assign the three existing species names with confidence because the types are available, and their genitalia are distinctive. -

Additional literature references treating Cuban Lepidoptera are also provided. The list is based primarily on literature records, although some collections were examined: the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática collection, Havana, Cuba; the Museo Felipe Poey collection, University of Havana; the Fernando de Zayas private collection, Havana; and the United States National Museum collection, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. Lotz, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bugwood.org , #5199023 The cactus moth is native to South America (Argentina, Southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay). It was introduced to Australia in the 1920s in an attempt to control prickly pear cactus (which is considered an invasive plant there). The biological control of the prickly pear cactus was successful there and cactus moth was later introduced into other countries, also in an attempt to control prickly pear cactus (which is considered an invasive plant in these regions). The cactus moth was first reported in the Florida Keys in 1989. In the U.S., this moth is considered a serious agricultural and environmental pest – not a beneficial biocontrol agent as prickly pear is not an invasive plant in the U.S., but is in fact a native species that is also cultivated for commercial purposes. 2 History of the Cactus Moth • Australia –Invasive Prickly pear cactus infested over 60 million acres –Cactus moth introduced as biocontrol agent –Highly successful • 16 million acres reclaimed • Successful in other countries Prickly Pear infestation in Australia, 1940 ̶ South Africa (1933), Hawaii (1950), Caribbean (1957) Image credit: Alan P. Frandsen5 & Birger Lindberg Møller 1 1234567890 Carminic acid, a glucosylated anthraquinone found in scale insects like Dactylopius coccus, has since ancient times been used as a red colorant in various applications. Here we show that a membrane-bound C-glucosyltransferase, isolated from D. coccus and designated DcUGT2, catalyzes the glucosylation of flavokermesic acid and kermesic acid into their respective C- glucosides dcII and carminic acid. DcUGT2 is predicted to be a type I integral endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein, containing a cleavable N-terminal signal peptide and a C- terminal transmembrane helix that anchors the protein to the ER, followed by a short cytoplasmic tail. DcUGT2 is found to be heavily glycosylated. Truncated DcUGT2 proteins synthesized in yeast indicate the presence of an internal ER-targeting signal. In these series are published original ardcles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly acquired facts in the field of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1 902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium.
