Truly, the OWHA is driven by World Female Hockey Leaders. Local teams and associations coordinate exceptional Fundamentals programs as well as coordinating House League and Competitive teams with sound values and a supportive infrastructure. Last season, the OWHA was finally fully recognized as the official PSO (Provincial Sports Organization) for the province of Ontario. It is a role we have played since our inception and this upgraded status creates greater opportunities. As fate would have it, the Ontario government mandated that all PSO’s reapply in order to be granted status going forward. We were up to the challenge, submitted extensive documentation and were one of fifty-seven sports granted official PSO status based on the quality of our submission and the strength of the organization. A major step forward for the OWHA and a requirement of the MTCS (Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport) was the acceptance of By-Laws that meet modern good governance standards and are aligned with Hockey Canada. We sincerely thank Leanne Cupidio and the OWHA task group consisting of Ted Dean, Elaine Maxwell, Pat Nicholls, Michelle Smith, John Wilkinson, and Bill Williamson for their extensive work. Special thanks to the OWHA members for their participation in providing input and attending meetings that ultimately led to the approval of the document at a special members’ meeting in January 2017. Another major undertaking this past season was the creation of an updated Strategic Plan that will drive the Association through 2020. Again, we sincerely thank the OWHA members who contributed to the plan through attendance at planning sessions and electronic submissions. We will increase the engagement of the OWHA membership with identification and analysis of challenges and opportunities that will lead to solid evidence- based decision making. The OWHA continues to work with the MCTS and other PSO’s in Ontario to share best practices and promote the positive values of sport participation. A key priority is enhancing the opportunities for females as players, coaches, officials and administrators. We encourage all OWHA teams and associations to reach out, encourage and support female coaches, officials and administrators in meaningful roles that maximize their potential as positive role models for the players. Another first for the OWHA was the participation in the 2016 Ontario Summer Games, an interesting concept for a winter sport. The event proved to be an overwhelming success for participants and for the Games itself. All forty team staff- coaches, trainers and managers – were women with a wide variety of hockey and professional backgrounds. Some were teachers and university students whose schedules suited the timing of the Games. Based on the success of this event, the OWHA applied for and was accepted into the 2018 Ontario Summer Games in London, Ontario. The OWHA has strengthened its support for Female Sledge Hockey and has worked closely with the Canadian Women’s Sledge Hockey Association and several Ontario players. We are encouraging everyone to promote and support women’s sledge hockey and we successfully applied to introduce the event at the 2018 Ontario Winter Games in Orillia, Ontario. It is our hope that this will be a catalyst to increase the participation and enjoyment for girls and women in sledge hockey. A few years ago, the OWHA took forward the idea of a Global Game that would unite women’s hockey internationally. Players from all countries would compete on one team in a game that moved across the world in the manner that mirrored New Year’s Eve. The event started as a trial with the Long Game moving across Canada 1 giving young girls at various levels to play for Team Ontario. This year, the OWHA hosted the Global Game and welcomed girls from across the country to play for Team Canada. The event was an overwhelming success with 38 countries participating. Internationally, we welcome Team China for a series of games including their participation in the Stoney Creek Tournament, sanctioned Toronto Leaside on a tour of New Zealand and welcomed Sonya McEneaney as a volunteer at the provincial championships. Sonya heads the Female development program for the Irish Ice Hockey Association. Within Ontario, it was a busy season for the OWHA in areas of development. The OWHA coordinated a bantam showcase and worked with Hockey Canada to put 200 girls through skills sessions during the USports women’s hockey nationals in Napanee. The OWHA hosted a High Performance Coaching Symposium in March with a strong message on the OWHA coaching philosophy and a focus on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). The OWHA hosted a High Performance officiating camp in conjunction with the Ontario Summer Games and held a supervisors seminar in August. Successful development programs were held in Sarnia, Bluewater and London in conjunction with the women’s Team Canada vs Team USA international hockey game. The OWHA coordinated two skills sessions in Ottawa on Clarkson Cup weekend. The OWHA participated in development sessions held in Ottawa during international exhibition games prior to the start of the World Cup in Toronto. At the High Performance level, OWHA teams performed well with OWHA Team Ontario Red taking gold and the OWHA Team Ontario Blue taking 4th place at the U18 National Championship in Regina. Durham West Lightning Midget AA team won the 2017 OWHA Provincial Championships and went on to win bronze at the Esso Cup National Female Championship in Manitoba. We congratulate all team members who are great ambassadors of the female game. The OWHA continues to promote a safe and healthy environment for both the physical and mental wellbeing of each athlete as the number one priority. Concussion education and management are very important and we remind everyone that if there is doubt, sit her out! We sincerely thank the OWHA volunteers and supporters for their incredible contributions to the players and to the game. It is the contributions of the many stakeholders that bring strength and success to the OWHA. We truly value the amount of work that goes into the growth and development of the game and we are honoured to work together for an even greater future. In closing, we would like to end by extending our most heartfelt appreciation for the contributions and friendship of Brian Tardiff who passed away following a brave struggle with ALS. Brian was a dedicated, humble contributor who served Female Hockey in a variety of roles including being a Board member and Treasurer of the OWHA. We thank him for his outstanding contributions and commitment to each and every player. 2 2016-2017 OWHA PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS STATS # of Participating Teams by Division/Category NOVICE ATOM PEEWEE BANTAM MIDGET INTERMEDIATE SENIOR 8 & under 10 & under 12 & under 14 & under 17 & under 21 & Under Open age A 9 AA 15 AA 24 AA 24 AA 24 AA 21 AA 6 B 16 A 16 A 20 A 24 A 24 A 17 A 24 C 12 BB 16 BB 20 BB 24 BB 24 BB 16 B 20 B 24 B 24 B 24 B 16 C 16 C 16 C 16 C 16 C 12 37 83 104 112 112 38 74 2017 OWHA PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS IN THE GTA AND SURROUNDING AREA TOTAL Players 8744 Participants (Players and Team Staff) 12104 Teams 560 Divisions 7 Categories 30 Arenas 15 Ice Surfaces 54 Games 1090 On-Ice Officials 280 Officiating Slots 2352 NEW OWHA MEMBERS The OWHA proudly welcomed the following new Independent Teams &/or Associations this past season: APPROVED NEW TEAMS, ASSOCIATIONS and LEAGUES SINCE 2016 AGM Centre/School New Female Hockey Program Centre/School New Female Hockey Program Toronto Rockets Senior A Markdale GHA Full Association Status Toronto Bandits Senior BB HTI Stars Intermediate AA St.
