Module A Describe and Monitor Wellhead, Sucker Rod String, and Subsurface Pump Foreword Beam pumps are used to lift a variety of liquids from subsurface wells to the surface. Beam pumps are commonly used at: oil wells to lift the oil to the surface gas wells to remove accumulated water which would prevent the gas from entering the wellbore coal bed methane wells to remove water from coal seams While HDC’s Describe and Operate Beam Pump series of training kits addresses beam pumping oil wells, the content applies to any beam pumping application. The series consists of four modules, listed below. These modules are designed to address the needs of oil well operators responsible for operating, monitoring, and optimizing existing beam pumping oil wells. The modules are task focused (i.e., center around what the operator does, why he/she does it, when he/she does it, and how). The modules are sequential: Module A is a prerequisite to Module B and so on. Module A Describe and Monitor Wellhead, Sucker Rod String, and Subsurface Pump Beam pumping systems consist of (see Figures 1 and 2): the wellhead and flowlines the beam pumping system, which consists of: – a beam pumping unit (pumpjack) at the surface – a pump at the bottom of the well – a sucker rod string which connects the pumpjack and pump – a prime mover (electric motor or internal combustion engine) which provides the energy for pumping the well Figure 1—Beam Pump at an Oil Well HDC Photo Beam pumping systems: are mechanically simple and durable and can run problem- free for a long time can be adapted to a variety of well conditions can be automated, when powered by an electric motor Beam pumping systems are recommended for low volume, shallow-to-medium depth oil wells pumping light to medium crude oil.

    The Economic Impacts of the Gulf of Mexico Oil and Natural Gas Industry Prepared For Prepared By Executive Summary Introduction Despite the current difficulties facing the global economy as a whole and the oil and natural gas industry specifically, the Gulf of Mexico oil and natural gas industry will likely continue to be a major source of energy production, employment, gross domestic product, and government revenues for the United States. Several proposals have been advanced recently which would have a major impact on the industry’s activity levels, and the economic activity supported by the Gulf of Mexico offshore oil and natural gas industry. The proposals vary widely, but for the purpose of this report three scenarios were developed, a scenario based on a continuation of current policies and regulations, a scenario examining the potential impacts of a ban on new offshore leases, and a scenario examining the potential impacts of a ban on new drilling permits approvals in the Gulf of Mexico. Energy and Industrial Advisory Partners (EIAP) was commissioned by the National Ocean Industry Association (NOIA) to develop a report forecasting activity levels, spending, oil and natural gas production, supported employment, GDP, and Government Revenues in these scenarios. Abstract A new era of oil well drilling and completions is changing the face of rod pumping forever. Horizontal drilling with multistage hydraulic fracturing often results in very challenging production conditions. Pump placement below the kick-off (i.e., in non-vertical dogleg section), frequent gas slugs, large volumes of fl owback frac sand, signifi cant fl uctuations in fl uid fl ow rates, and steep decline curves are examples of the common challenges affecting the production of horizontal wells. Even the most sophisticated conventional pumpjack with an AC motor and variable frequency drive/variable speed drive (VFD/VSD) does not have the precise rod string control required to help mitigate and resolve many of these complex rod pumping issues that are frequently associated with horizontal multistage, hydraulically fractured wells. Linear pumping units, and more specifi cally linear hydraulic pumpjacks, have fundamental differences in geometry and control capabilities. Coupled with the fact that both natural gas and AC drive units support the same functionality, linear hydraulic pumpjacks provide the sophisticated rod string control required by today’s demanding wells. This paper will compare and contrast the different rod pumping methods and their abilities to address these production challenges. The paper will also discuss the additional benefi ts of combining the unique capabilities of a linear hydraulic pumpjack with sophisticated optimization control and remote access. The combination of these three key features provides an unprecedented solution that has the potential to become the next-generation rod pumping technology for cost effectively producing today’s challenging wells.

The infrastructure built over decades to supply fossil fuels is the world’s largest enterprise with the largest market capitalization. Of fossil fuels, oil and natural gas make up 63% of energy usage.1 Across the energy economy, the source and mix of fuels used across these sectors is changing, particularly the rapid increase in natural gas production from unconventional resources for electricity generation and the rapid increase in domestic production of shale oil. Wellhead growth has occurred in many deep wells in China recently. In the paper, casing axial force and wellhead movement are calculated and compared in regard to moments that free sections of surface casing appear. The parameters considered include preliminary casing tension, free section length and change in wellbore temperature. The moment that surface casing free section comes into being has great influence on wellhead movement, so it is discussed in detail. According to comprehensive investigation on deep well and ultra-deep well accidents, wellhead growth is based on the fact that before production the cement sheath of surface casing has already failed, and during production wellhead grows up due to wellbore temperature increases. The most possible reason of surface casing cement sheath failure is bad cement job quality. Bad cement sheath cannot support casing axial loads and separates from casing. The free section of surface casing will experience large axial force cycle which is harmful to wellbore integrity. Natural production declines from spending cuts and canceled drilling plans were not anticipated to be enough to avoid hitting the physical limits of oil storage capacity, a potential crisis that caused benchmark crude oil futures to plunge into negative territory in April. So oil and gas companies large and small ranked their assets, well by well, and chose which ones to keep pumping, which ones to throttle back and which ones to shut down, maybe for good. It was, for many, a brutal calculus that resulted in thousands of wells getting shuttered in the country's most prolific oil provinces, and it created a great experiment involving well operations and geology that those inside and outside the industry are watching closely. "We just tromped on the brake pedal with both feet and slowed down production dramatically, such that it looks like we are going to get through" veteran Midland-based oilman Kyle McGraw said in an interview.
