Generations and the Transformation of Social Movements in Postwar Canada DOMINIQUE CLE´ MENT* Historians, particularly in Canada, have yet to make a significant contribution to the study of contemporary social movements. State funding, ideological conflict, and demographic change had a critical impact on social movements in Canada in the 1960s and 1970s, as this case study of the Ligue des droits de l’homme (Montreal) shows. These developments distinguished the first (1930s–1950s) from the second (1960s–1980s) generation of rights associations in Canada. Generational change was especially pronounced within the Ligue. The demographic wave led by the baby boomers and the social, economic, and political contexts of the period had a profound impact on social movements, extending from the first- and second-generation rights associations to the larger context including movements led by women, Aboriginals, gays and lesbians, African Canadians, the New Left, and others. Les historiens, en particulier au Canada, ont peu contribue´ a` ce jour a` l’e´tude des mouvements sociaux contemporains. Le financement par l’E´ tat, les conflits ide´olo- giques et les changements de´mographiques ont eu un impact de´cisif sur les mouve- ments sociaux au Canada lors des anne´es 1960 et 1970, comme le montre la pre´sente e´tude de cas sur la Ligue des droits de l’homme (Montre´al). A., The University of British Columbia, 2003 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Kim Noriko Kobayashi, 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis is a survey of the development and dissemination of kumi-daiko ensembles in Canada, with the focus on their membership, gender, drums and repertoire, and links to the Japanese Canadian community. A case study of the group Katari Taiko’s formative stage is presented to highlight key issues that confronted kumi-daiko ensembles in the past. With the emergence of exclusive groups in the form of pan-Asian, all-women kumi-daiko organizations, an inspection of Katari Taiko’s prominent female representation highlights gender and feminist issues and the reconfiguring of gender constructs and portrayals. I will argue that these exclusive female spaces offer a refuge for queer members as well as an avenue to express their sexual identity through creative and artistic means. This discussion is complemented by an organological overview of drum construction, general taiko drum taxonomy, and an update on contemporary taiko drum manufacturing which includes a socio-historical portrait of the Burakumin (Japan’s exclusive traditional drum makers) and North American taiko drummers who are forced out of necessity to become ingenious drum makers. This thesis concludes with the referencing of traditional Japanese music in the kumi-daiko repertoire as discussed by prominent drummers and ensembles followed by an analysis of Seiichi Tanaka’s piece “Matsuri” in the context of its different renditions by Canadian kumi-daiko ensembles. -

Asian American Theater's Next
FEATURE FEATURE ASIAN AMERICAN THEatER’S NEXT ACT Playwrights and performers are moving beyond stories about culture clash and identity politics. Writer Steffi Lau Illustrator Dung Hoang AURORAE Khoo’s play Fayette-Nam is a story about a young black soldier who gets caught in a love triangle with a 40-year-old Asian Ameri- can woman and her daughter. Afraid of going to Iraq, the soldier goes absent without leave and takes refuge in the doughnut shop run by the women in Fayetteville, NC. Both women fall in love with him, and at the same time, they harbor racist views toward black people and must deal with their conflicting emotions. But the fact that the women are Asian American is only an accessory to the story, says Duy Nguyen, co-artistic director of San Francisco’s Asian American Theater Company, which produced the play, a dark comedy that premiered in June. The story does not revolve around them being Asian American, and unlike conventional Asian American plays where white racism is the focal point, the women’s attitudes toward the black man are explored. Today, it seems that Asian American theater is moving past stories about generation gaps, culture clashes and finding identity — topics that pioneers like David Henry Hwang and Philip Kan Gotanda made the cen- terpieces of their plays in the 1970s and 1980s. In Hwang’s first play, F.O.B., the culture clash between a new Chinese immigrant and a Chi- nese American is explored, while his third play, Family Devotions, shows the conflict between East and West within three generations of a Chinese American family. -

Shiomi had been searching for his identity as a dramatist of Asian descent, and as such much valued explorations of Asian-American issues in Minneapolis, a city with a relatively small Asian-American population. Mask Dance commemorates the birth of Theater Mu. Reportedly, Minnesota has more than 1,000 Korean adoptees, and Shiomi portrays their complicated feelings for their white adoptive parents and their own identity crises, employing the form of a traditional Korean mask dance, “Pongsan T’alch’um.” These Korean mask plays are colored with down-to-earth aspects, which often satirize the privileged class. Likewise, Shiomi’s mask drama, despite its serious topic, contains many satirical features. This paper, consequently, aims to explore how Shiomi portrays the problems of the Korean adoptees by employing this particular comedic style. Introduction
introduction In 2000 the East West Players (ewp) in Los Angeles produced the Korean American playwright Euijoon Kim’s new play My Tired Broke Ass Pontificat- ing Slapstick Funk, which represented a new direction for the ewp. As the pre- mier Asian American theater company, ewp was known for its long associa- tion with Little Tokyo, a Japanese American community in Los Angeles, and its loyal subscribers consisted mostly of older Japanese Americans. With Kim’s provocative play, the company aimed to reach out to new audiences, especially those of the younger generation in Koreatown across the city. The theater critic Julio Martinez described the play as representative of “a vibrant but embryonic culture struggling to establish its own identity out of the myriad influences that are constantly bombarding it.”1 At the time, I was in Los Angeles to attend a panel discussion on the future of Asian American drama and to interview Asian American theater artists. I also had a personal investment in Kim’s play. As a Korean American of the gen- eration Kim writes about, I wanted to see what he had to say about the direc- tion of the emerging culture cultivated in Koreatown. I grew up in Southern California and recognized his characters and their issues. Kim was also a pan- elist, and I wanted to hear what he had to say. Led by Alice Tuan, the panel included more established writers such as Sandra Tsing Loh and Chay Yew. As the youngest member of the panel, Kim was expected to speak for the new generation of Asian Americans in the twenty- first century and to articulate the significance of his play. -

ROY Abstract In 1942, the approximately 8,500 Japanese Canadian residents of Vancouver, like all other Japanese Canadians, were required to leave the coast. With lim- ited exceptions, they could not return until 1 April 1949. Early returnees began to recreate a community; later, Japanese Canadians too young to remember the war and a handful of new immigrants reclaimed pride in the Japanese Canadian heritage.
