For example, the thumb often brushes against the 3rd string while intentionally playing the 4th string on Counts 2 and 4. Also, the first finger may strike the 2nd string while intentionally playing the first string. These modifications are not planned; the player decides as he goes along when to let this happen. The first section of the next tune is played straight, while the following section includes some of these extra notes (shown in brackets) the way they are played on the video. 4 NINE POUND HAMMER E A # ## 4 ˙ ˙ Œnœœœ˙ & # 4 œœ œ œ ˙ œ œœœ œœœœœ œ œ œœ strum 00 332 0 002 2 Ô 2 1 22 22 22 2 2 2 0 0 0 0 A‡ E B‡ EA‡ ##Œnœœœ˙ Œ ˙˙ &## ˙ œœœ œ œ œœœœ œ œ œœ œ œ œ œ œœ 332 0 00 Ô 0 002 22 22 11 22 0 2 2 0 0 0 2 0 E E A ##˙ ˙˙Œnœœœ˙ &##œœ ˙ œœœœœœœœœœ œœœ œ œœ 0 00 332 0 Ô02 2 21 22 22 22 2 2 0 00 0 0 0 A‡ E B‡ EA‡ E ##Œnœœœ˙ Œ ˙˙w &## ˙ œœœ œ œ œœœœ œ œ œœ œ œ œ œ œœw 332 0 00 0 Ô 0 002 22 22 11 22 0 2 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 5 1st MELODY PART E A # # nœœœ # # œ œ œ }˙ ˙ Œ ˙}˙} & œœ }œ }œ œœœœ œ œ œ œœœœ strum }00 332 0 002 0}} }2} Ô 2 11 22 1 22 22 22 2 2 2 0 0 0 0 A‡ E B‡ EA‡ ##nœœœ ##Œ ˙˙Œœœœ}˙˙ &n}œ œ #}œ}œ ( œ) œ }œn}œ œ œ œœ œ œ œœ 332 0 }00 } } 0 } }002 0}} Ô0 1 1 2 10 22 22 11 22 0 2 2 0 0 0 2 0 E E A ## nœœœ ##˙œœ˙}˙Œ ˙˙ &#}œœ }œ}œœœ}œ}œ œœ œœœœœœ 0 00}332 0 }02 }0} }2} Ô1 11 22 21 22 22 22 2 2 0 00 0 0 0 A‡ E B‡ EA‡ E ##nœœœ ##Œ }˙˙Œœœœ}˙˙wœ œ &n}œ œ #}œ}œ ( œ) }œ }œn}œœœ œ œ œœ œ œ œœ˙œ strum 332 }0 }00 0 } 0 } 0 } }002}0}}02 Ô0 1 1 2 2 10 2 22 22 11 22 1 0 2 2 0 X 0 0 2 0 02 6 RHYTHM PART E A‡ #### Œ œ Œ œ ŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœ & œ œ œœnœœnœœ œ œ œœœœœœ 00 00 00 00 00 00 22 22 Ô 11 11 00 00 22 22 22 22 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 #E B‡ EA‡ E ###ŒœŒœŒœœŒœœŒœŒœŒœœÓœ &#œœœœœnœœœœ œœœœœœœœ strum 00 22 00 0 00 00 02 002 Ô11 22 10 12 22 11 22 21 2 2 0 X 0 2 0 02 E A‡ ####ŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœŒœ &œœœœnœœnœœ œœœœœœœœ 00 00 00 00 00 00 22 22 Ô11 11 00 00 22 22 22 22 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 #E B‡ EA‡ E ###ŒœŒœŒœœŒœœŒœŒœ˙ œ œ &#œœœœœnœ#˙ œœ œœœœœœ˙ œ strum strum 00 22 000 00 00 02002 Ô11 22 1012 22 11 2221 2 2 0 2X 0 2 0 02 7 2nd MELODY PART E A #### ˙ ˙ Œnœœœ˙˙ & }˙ }œ }˙ }œ }œœ}œ}œ œ œ œœœœ }00}}332 0 0}0}0 }2} Ô 11 22 22 22 22 2 2 0 0 0 0 #A‡ nœœE B‡ ###Œ}œœ˙˙Œœœœ &œ n}œ }œ}œ( œ) }œ œ œ œœœ œ }332 0 2 } }0}}002} Ô0 11 2 2 22 22 11 0 2 2 0 0 2 #EA‡E ###˙˙ œ jœœœw &˙n˙ œ œœbœœw ˙ œ œ nœ ˙ œ Jœ œ w strum strum 000 000 0 020 Ô1012432 1 22 S 02 2 0 0 S432 0 8 SLIDES, HAMMERS & PULLS SLIDE Simplified Notation # # œj œ. œj œ. & # # œ œ. œ œ. œ. œ. ALSO: A “quick” hammer, pull or slide is represented by a grace note in the music/tab. In standard music notation such grace notes are written BEFORE the beat, though they are actually played ON the beat.
