HANG UP ON FRAUDSTERS is calling on residents to heighten their vigilance to potential fraud via telephone scams and courier fraud after a significant number of incidents in the county over the past year. The message 'Hang Up On Fraudsters' is being spread throughout Dorset and the South West in response to a spate of offences within the last 12 months. Victim losses within the region are in excess of two million, with 700 reported crimes, and potentially many more unreported. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is urged to: • Hang up immediately, dial 1471 and note the number that called you. • If you need to use the same phone, wait five minutes, as the fraudsters could still be on the line or use another phone on a different line. • Report the call to your local police on 101. Simple guidelines to help you to prevent yourself becoming a victim of courier fraud are: • NEVER give your PIN or bank details out over the phone • NEVER withdraw cash and send it anywhere via a courier or taxi • NEVER send bank cards anywhere via a courier or taxi • NEITHER the police nor your bank will ever ask for you to do any of the above. VICARS RECTORS AND PREBENDS? I read a newspaper article recently referring to a 'Methodist Vicar' which I found confusing. This made me think that you might like some clarification of church titles. If nothing else it might help you at a quiz night! The Church from the very earliest times has recognised only three types of clergy, Bishop, Priest or Deacon. The other titles simply refer to roles that one or other of these clergy may hold. Bishops, as the successor to the Apostles, are leaders of the church in a diocese whilst an archbishop is simply the senior bishop in a province (a group of dioceses). In a large diocese extra bishops, called 'Suffragan' or 'Area' Bishops, maybe appointed to assist. Dioceses are divided into administrative regions called Archdeaconries managed, by Archdeacons - priests appointed to the position. Archdeaconries consist of groups of parishes (deaneries) administered, by a Rural Dean - priests elected to the post by clergy in that deanery. In a parish often the name given is an indication of its history.

Vicar: Originally a priest running a parish on behalf of a religious foundation and paid by it. Now often the member of a clergy team Rector: Originally a priest appointed by the Bishop and paid directly by the parish. Now often a clergy team leader. Prebendary: Priest appointed by the Bishop, often also a canon of a cathedral, but paid from the proceeds of a specific piece of land - the prebend. Priest-in-Charge: Priest running a parish but on a contract of employment. A deacon: Originally appointed to deal with alms. Today usually appointed for one year, as a trainee, before becoming a priest. Parish priests are sometimes called 'curate' because their appointment is to the 'cure (care) of souls' in a parish. Other names that you might come across are: Canon: A person, ordained or lay, who is a member of the governing body of a Cathedral. Dean: The clergy person who runs a Cathedral. Chaplain: Priest appointed to a community position ie a hospital, or military. Yours, Tony Gilbert Team Rector

On behalf of the church, a sincere thanks for all the help at the Fete. The next excitement is the evening at the Sports Club, on Friday 10thJuly, starting at 6:00pm. Barbeque, lots of games, fun and frolics! - and a raffie. Also two great competitions - walking football and mixed netball!! Call Alan Fall for details (425747).
