Most of us have a sweet tooth and some of us have more than one. Barb Roberts can handle that. With her in-home baking business, Sensational Sweets, at 28 Masters Place Drive, Maumelle she can appease that sweet tooth hunger.

Barb started this business in 2004 after she was laid off her job following 23 years in the area of customer service and found extra time on her hands. She began wondering how to fill her hours productively. Her 7 year old son, Connor, offered his

Barb thought, “Why not—what do I have to lose?” And Sensational Sweets became a reality.

With a love for baking creative and beautiful treats, Barb stepped into her kitchen and began. Although cakes are her current best seller, she also does a mix of pastries and cookies. Tortes and biscotti also form part of her repertoire. Nothing is off limits for Barb. If the customer can think of it, she can do it. All of her products are custom made with the best and freshest ingredients available and nothing is pre-baked. Barb even designs cakes for those “out of the box” occasions. Her years spent in customer service are still fresh in her mind as she “listens” to her ~ Continued on page 14

Personal meetings and a sample of her wares are also available, especially when the occasion is a wedding or other large function. Her day always brightens when she sees the facial expression when someone picks up one of her cakes. When they are so obviously pleased, she is also delighted.

Several aspects of the business Barb really enjoys include the flexible hours that allow her to take her son to and from school. Her schedule can now fit around her family’s needs. Her husband and son also function as on-site taste-testers when she tries something new and everyone enjoys the process.

Most of her free time is spent with her family, which increased by one in July ’05 when the Roberts’ family adopted Remi, a little girl from China. They also became involved in the FCC (Families with Children from China) and enjoy the various functions when their children meet and socialize with other adopted Chinese children.

But most of all, this business is special to Barb because her son thought enough of his mom’s talent to encourage her to share it with others. It makes her feel very special and Sensational Sweets provides the tangible and tasty reality of her dream.

For a special custom made treat for your Valentine or any other occasion, give this baking entrepreneur a call. Barb can be reached at 350-0666.

By Bob Robbins Photos courtesy of Mallard Pointe Lodge

16 MAUMELLE LIVING es, I’ll admit that me and the boys took Ya recent duck hunting trip that some people might consider more like a trip to the spa or a vacation resort, but I don’t feel like less of a hunter because of it. We were treated like kings by the guides and staff of the Mallard Pointe Lodge. We also had the best opening day of duck season that I’ve had in many years.

Mallard Pointe Lodge in Brinkley, Arkansas was formerly called Wildlife Farms II. The 11,000 square-foot lodge provides all the modern luxuries in a sporting atmosphere that is second to none. Now with a newer look and the same great outdoor activities, it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite hunting getaways.

I arrived a little late Friday night and was greeted by old friends and a hot 12 ounce Porterhouse steak with all the “fixins”. I still can’t decide which of these I was happier to see. We laughed and ate and ate, and laughed and ate some more. I’ve been called many things in my life, but a “light eater” has never been one of them. I had to stand up just to find room for the hot fudge sundae that topped-off an unbelievable dinner. Talk of the duck hunting to come and early morning trip out to the blind was enough encouragement for just about everyone to head off to their rooms for the night.

Weheaded out to the blind the next morning total of 21 ducks that morning in a very in perfect time to get out decoys, check our short period of time. One of the really great areas to go and watch eagles soar is Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge south of Russellville. Like many other birds, the eagles that take up winter residency at the refuge migrate south each year from northern breeding areas. A dozen or more eagles can be spotted at Holla Bend from December through February. Yes, wintertime is the best time to see the greatest variety of wildlife on the refuge. The eagles can be seen not only soaring, but also perched in the trees along the Arkansas River. Binoculars and a camera are definitely two essential items to bring along on your trip. To improve your chances of seeing wildlife, an observation tower and a foot trail are located on the refuge but if you prefer to stay comfy and warm, there is an eight-mile auto tour which meanders throughout the 7,055 acres. Sometimes, better results are achieved if you drive slowly and remain in your vehicle so as not to disturb any wildlife. Also, early mornings and late afternoons are best for observation and photography since ~ Continued on page 19 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2006 19 KEY BENEFITS GROUP “Your Key to Better Benefits” Quality and Innovative Health Plans Individuals Employer Groups (minimum of 2 employees) Associations

I mentioned that wintertime is the best time for wildlife at the refuge because Holla Bend’s primary purpose is to provide a winter home for a portion of the millions of ducks and geese that use the Mississippi Flyway each year. During these migrations as many as fourteen species of ducks and four kinds of geese will stopover at the refuge. Throughout a typical winter it’s not uncommon for the refuge to host up to 100,000 ducks and geese at one time.

Holla Bend is also home to other familiar wildlife that lives here all year long – white- tailed deer, turkey, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, beaver and fox squirrel. But it’s the eagle in flight, soaring majestically that’ll leave an SPECIAL PRICING FOR SENIOR CITIZENS & VETERANS impact, which I guarantee, will stay with you forever.

I also might add in regards to the National Wildlife Refuge System – it truly is unmatched anywhere in the world, a unique and extensive network of land and water (92 million acres) which is protected and managed especially for wildlife and their habitat as well as for people to enjoy. The system has been referred to as “America’s best kept secret.” Get out and find out for yourself what the secret is all about!

28 MAUMELLE LIVING appy New Year everyone! I hope the Hholiday season was extremely joyful for you and your family. Santa Claus made his stop at our home and it seems that everyone was very happy. Now all I have left to do is reorganize everything that was old to make more room for the new goodies. Believe it or not, this time of the year is the busiest for me. People have taken all of their Christmas decorations down, gotten new décor items as gifts, and are ready to make a change to get the year off to a great start. It’s also one of my most challenging times of year since most people have spent much more than they intended over the holidays and they are relying on me to make sure they don’t spend too much on the rooms or projects they are undertaking.

There are so many ways to make changes in your rooms and not spend a small fortune, you just need to try and think “outside the box”. This can sometimes seem impossible, but trust me, it can be done. The following before and after rooms were completed on very tight budgets and have made a large impact on the homeowners and their home.

In this client’s home, she had a sitting room that she and her family just used to pass through on their way to answer the door. She didn’t care much for this room and thought it would be a waste of time and money to redecorate. I convinced her to give me a small amount of money and a chance and I would completely change the way she felt about this room. I really don’t believe in wasted space and felt like it would be a nice retreat for her and her husband to enjoy once the children were off "Whether it's a time to remember, or just keeping time" to bed. The first thing I asked her to do was "It's About Time" to paint the back of her bookshelves the same color as her walls. She was a little hesitant at 501-225-9593 first but decided to trust me and give it a shot. 9816 Rodney Parham • Little Rock • www.danwerke.com After all, it’s just paint and she knew if she did not like it, it could easily be changed. As I have talked about in previous articles, paint Saving the world isn’t easy. Saving a life is. is the single most inexpensive way to change a room and create the most visible difference. Just one pint of blood can save up to three lives. Suddenly the old accessories she hadn’t really liked before now looked completely different. I added a few new ones to make the others look like new and did a little rearranging.

Next, I “dressed up” the windows by purchasing store bought panels and had them bloodsaves.com ~ Continued on page 30 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2006 29 ~ Continued from page 29 hung on 2” wooden poles and that instantly made the drapes look more expensive. Not everything needs to be custom made. You can take good quality, store bought and dress them up in ways that meet your budget needs. Sometimes I add different trims and fringes to plain panels and, voila, you have semi custom drapery. The same goes for pillows. I love creating and designing wonderful pillows with beautiful fabrics and tassels but sometimes I just have to improvise. There are some great looking pillows in stores, you just have to look Ê9"1\ for them and be creative with them. Finally, placement of the furniture and -“œŽiÊÌ] accessories can really enhance a room. By Meleah Montgomery Photography by Gregory Photography

As winter approaches and the air outside begins to get nippy, it’s our nature to want to hibernate inside our homes, snuggle up by the heat and sip some hot chocolate. Let’s face it, it’s human nature, but often times as we sit inside during these months, we grow weary staring at the same four walls, worn carpet, old curtains and stained countertops. We’ve all heard of the “winter blues” and probably all have experienced it as well. This year, don’t just sit around, do something about it. Take control of your surroundings! Its time to make a change – in your scenery, that is!

Call Jacksonville Floor Covering (JFC) to make your home look fresh again. Whether you want to update your floors, kitchen, bathroom, or just your window treatments, the JFC team of professionals can help. “We have a large selection of linoleum, hardwood flooring, laminates, ceramic tiles, carpet, plus counter tops and backslashes. Besides flooring, we also do custom window treatments such as wood blinds and Venetian blinds,” says Rush. And it doesn’t just stop there. JFC also does showers. “We do it all, from residential to commercial remodels as well as new,” he states. Richard’s team of professionals love remodeling jobs but admits much of the business stems from new installations.

What puts Jacksonville Floor Covering above the area competition? The answer can be summed up in two words – knowledgeable staff. Owners Richard Rush and Woody Campbell with their combined thirty- seven years of flooring experience covers a wide range of know-how. Add Pamela Johnson, their Interior Designer and Head of Sales, and you have an unbeatable combination that far exceeds the competition. “Pamela got her start in the floor covering business while working with her dad at the tender age of fourteen,” states Richard. “She is great to work with and a vital part of our team.”

All three members of this team have a wide range of flooring knowledge and experience. “We have working knowledge with every aspect and job in the flooring business, while most sales people in this industry have never installed it themselves. Knowing it from the inside-out gives us a unique perspective and expertise that serves as an invaluable resource to our clients,” Rush states. “We know how to overcome an issue a do-it- yourself client might be having when putting a floor down and can solve their dilemma by providing a solution.”

Another advantage JFC has is their service. Although problems are few and far between, they are handled in a timely manner because you are only one phone call away from the top! At many other flooring stores it ~ Continued on page 34 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2006 33 ~ Continued from page 33 can take a lot to get an owner involved since most companies have a floor manager to deal with customer complaints. It’s the floor manager’s job to do everything in his or her power to handle customers’ concerns. This often creates a communication wall between the customer and the owner. “We do not have such a manager here; I am here to do anything in my power to provide the best in personal service to our clients directly,” Rush explains. “The idea is that we never want to get so big that we forget where our business comes from.”

Add their exceptional knowledge and outstanding service with quality materials such as Bolick, Beaulieu, Interceramic, Donco and Shaw and it’s easy to see why Jacksonville Floor Covering has been around for twelve years. Top it off with value pricing and this company is hard to beat! “We have allied ourselves with a few companies and brought in their products so we can get the lowest price they allow,” Richard asserts. “Because we do a large amount with these 0BLMFZ5IVNQ distributors, JFC is important to them which equates into better pricing. This puts us at an advantage and allows us to pass the savings on to our customers.”

Give the expert team at Jacksonville Flooring a call for your next remodel job whether you need installation or choose to do-it-yourself. They can walk you through the process and offer “free” tips for that turn-key job or give free estimates if you choose to pass the installing headache on to their reliable and trusted installers. The store is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. They are also available after hours by appointment.

Hopkins felt that he had won the first match, and a lot of people agreed with him. You might think that after losing to him a second time, the boxing press and Hopkins supporters would have to admit that Jermain Taylor is truly the best middleweight boxer in the world. You would be wrong. This time around all three judges scored the fight exactly the same, giving it to Taylor 115-113, but afterwards Hopkins still claimed that he won. The next day, the sports pages and boxing websites talked about Jermain Taylor as a still unproven champ.

Much like in the fi rst fight, Taylor won the first few rounds outright, but slowed down as the fight wore on. Bernard Hopkins, at 41 years old, is known as a crafty fighter and, after holding the title through a division-record twenty challenges, anything short of a knockout was guaranteed to be met with controversy.

38 MAUMELLE LIVING After the fight, Jermain Taylor told reporters, “I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I did win it. The man is a clever fighter. It’s hard to hit him. You’ve got to pull all the tricks in the book just to hit him.”

What is next for Jermain Taylor? The number one contender for the title is Ronald “Winky” Wright, and he is guaranteed an opportunity to challenge Taylor for the title. Taylor’s promoter, Lou DiBella, wanted Taylor to get a warm up fight against a lesser opponent before facing Wright. Taylor has had an exhausting year with the two fights against Hopkins and could use the chance to relax a little and work on his technique. However, the has opened a free negotiations period between Wright and Taylor, and is trying to force him into defending his #ONGRATULATIONS*ERMAIN4AYLOR title in his next fight. ONRETAININGTHE Whatever happens, it looks like the locals will get a chance to prove their loyalty. Get ready fans . . . Taylor wants his next 7ORLD-IDDLEWEIGHT#HAMPIONSHIP fight to be in Arkansas. With a match up against Winky Wright in Little Rock, Jermain Taylor would have the opportunity to 7EAREPROUDOFYOU prove irrefutably that he is worthy of the championship belts that he wears, and Arkansas would have the opportunity to show the world that they support Taylor as a local hero: a gentleman, a role model, and the undisputed Middleweight Champion of the World. -AC!RTHUR$RIVE .ORTH,ITTLE2OCK !2 WWWBLUEHILLWRECKERCOM

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2006 51 A New Beginning By Lorraine Hensley

rmchair gardeners love the months Aof January and February. Although there are a few gardening chores left over from the general fall clean-up, these are the months when we sit and dream of how this year our garden is going to be even better than last year. And it usually is. We visualize just the changes we may want to bring to our landscape. Perhaps try some familiar plants in a little different location in the landscape or “go for broke” and try a few plantings that are new to the yard and gardener. But, like everything else, leftovers from last fall need to be taken care of.
