Garcia Hopkinson, Julie Czerneda and Mary Robinette It’s a really good issue showing why it’s won Editor Kowal. It’s going to be huge! I’ll have more so many Nova Awards. By the time you read this, LosCon will be details later. By the way, the Novas were given out and over. I’m sorry to say I cannot read the future, There’s the 40th issue of Banana Wings out the winners were Claire, Banana Wings for but I’m sure it was a good time. I’ll be writing and it’s great stuff with articles from James Best Fanzine, and Sue Mason winning just about it later, that’s for sure. Bacon, Dave Langford, Nova Award winner barely over Alison Scott for Best Fan Artist. In The TAFF race continues with Frank Wu Claire Brialey, and Mark Plummer, a front an odd twist, I came without six votes of and Anne KG Murphy & Brian Gray battling it cover by Pat Vrizi, a BaCover from Ditmar, a winning Best Fanzine with James and Claire out for votes. They both have words in The pair of Anticipation reviews from Randy Byers for Journey Planet. That’s awesome largely Drink Tank 232 about why they should be your and Niall Harrison, both of whom write about because no American has ever won a Nova delegate. It’s a fun topic and they’ll both do our dinner at Au Pied de Cochon, and my because technically we’re not eligible, but great! article, “TAFF Viewed as a Series of Haiku.” since JP is majority a UK zine, it’s eligible and I’m along for the ride! There’s also the auction of Tuckerizations for TAFF coming, featuring some names you might have heard of. Cory Doctorow, Charlie Stross, David Brin, Elizabeth Bear, Nalo 2 Speaking of great zines that I seldom get a failure of Taral Wayne to win the Fan Artist last chance to read, largely because it only comes year, I’m beginning to think there isn’t, Bruce out once a year, there’s It Goes on the Shelf. will walk off with a Hugo at Worldcon next Ned Brooks does an incredible job with each year. issue, which may explain why it only comes Steve Green’s new zine, the Fortnightly out once a year. There are looks at books, Fix, is also up on eFanzines.com and is well magazines, and folks. It’s got a great Brad worth the time and effort. A really nice little Foster cover that I think is one of his best B zine! +W pieces in recent memory. Also, New Moon, the latest edition in the Vegas fandom is at it again. There’s issue Twilight Saga, is pretty much the greatest thing #10 of Home Kookin’ with Arnie Katz at the ever, though I totally wanna see the movie reins. It’s good stuff, though sadly I’ve only within the movie, Gambling Gods and LSD. gotten to skim. Curse this money-payin’ gig which now leaves me little time for at-work FANAC!!! Exhibition Hall is out and its fourth issue is really fun as it covers all sorts of fun. eFanzines.com is its home so go and check it out. Speaking of eFanzines, there are some great things that’ve been posted lately. First off, there’s The Panoramic Route by Guy and Rose Marie Lillian. It’s a fantastic trip report from the Lillians on their trip to Anticipation. I’m in it. That’s awesome. Guy also put out a fine issue of The Zine Dump, his zine review zine. I like that Guy guy. He’s a good guy. Bruce Gillespie is probably the World’s Top If you haven’t read Christina Lake and Fan Writer. That’s a big claim, but you go and Doug Bell’s Head, issue 8 is on eFanzines.com. read Scratch Pad, issues 71 and 72 now on It’s got a great cover and is well worth reading. eFanzines.com, and you tell me different. His Sadly, I’ve only managed to skim it, but I read zines Steam Engine Time and Scratch Pad are issue 7 and it was a delight! both great. exhibition hall 15 the weird west exhibition hall - november 2010 chris garcia - editor, ariane wolfe - fashion editor james bacon - london bureau chief, ric flair - whooooooooooo! contact can be made at [email protected] Well, October was one of the stronger months for Steampunk in the public eye. No conventions in October, which is rare these days, but there was the Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com. They had some seriously good stuff, including writing from Diana Vick, who also appears in these pages, and myself! There was a great piece from Nisi Shawl that mentioned the amazing panel that she, Liz Gorinsky, Michael Swanwick and Ann VanderMeer were on at World Fantasy last year. Jaymee Goh had a piece on Commodification and Post-Modernism that was well-written, though slightly troubling to me. Stephen Hunt’s Steampunk Timeline was good stuff, and the omnipresent GD Falksen (who has never written for us!) had a couple of good piece. Me? I wrote an article about how Tomorrowland was the signpost for the rise of Steampunk. You can read it at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/goodbye-tomorrow- hello-yesterday. The second piece is all about an amusement park called Gaslight in New Orleans. I’ll let you decide about that one - http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/gaslight- amusement. The final one all about The Cleveland Steamers. This much attention is a good thing for Steampunk, especially from a site like Tor.com, a gateway for a lot of SF readers who aren’t necessarily a part of fandom.

Middle August 2019 Around The Hotel. Opuntia is published by Dale Speirs, Calgary, Alberta. It is posted on www.efanzines.com and The cover shows a licence plate I saw in the hotel parking lot. www.fanac.org. My e-mail address is: [email protected] When sending me an emailed letter of comment, please include your name and town in the message. Bottom: I took a long shot of the hotel from a half-block away. At left is the Atrium section where the dealer bourse and science panels were. At right is the Tower section where most of the literary seminars were. The two are connected at their third stories by an enclosed pedestrian crossing over Bonaventure Drive. Most con-goers preferred the shorter route out on the street, and crossed at the WHEN WORDS COLLIDE 2019 traffic lights. by Dale Speirs Below: Registration was quick and easy. Well organized. [Reports of previous WWC conventions appeared in OPUNTIAs #71, 253, 266, 282, 318, 350, 387, and 421.] Calgary’s ninth annual readercon When Words Collide was held on the weekend of August 9 to 11. It took place at the usual venue of the Delta South hotel on Southland Drive SE and straddling overtop Bonaventure Drive. The membership was capped at 750 plus volunteers, so the convention was like a village rather than the mob scenes of Calgary Comic Expo (90,000 paid attendees) or the Calgary anime convention Otafest (8,000 paid). As with my past reports, I’ll sort events out by theme rather than chronology.

  • Western (Genre)

    Western (Genre)

Western (genre) http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/41275 The Western is a fiction genre seen in film, television, radio, literature, painting and other visual arts. Westerns are devoted to telling stories set primarily in the later half of the 19th century in what became the Western United States (known as the American Old West or Wild West), but also in Western Canada, Mexico ("The Wild Bunch", "Vera Cruz"), Alaska ("The Far Country", "North to Alaska") and even Australia ("Quigley Down Under", "The Proposition"). Some Westerns are set as early as the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 but most are set between the end of the American Civil War and the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890, though there are several "late Westerns" (e.g., "The Wild Bunch" and "100 Rifles") set as late as the Mexican Revolution in 1913. There are also a number of films about Western- type characters in contemporary settings where they don't fit in, such as "Junior Bonner" set in the 1970s, and "Down in the Valley" and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" in the 21st Century. Westerns often portray how primitive and obsolete ways of life confronted modern technological or social changes. This may be depicted by showing conflict between natives and settlers or U.S. Cavalry, or by showing ranchers being threatened by the onset of the Industrial Revolution. American Westerns of the 1940s and 1950s emphasise the values of honor and sacrifice. Westerns from the 1960s and 1970s often have more pessimistic view, glorifying a rebellious anti-hero and highlighting the cynicism, brutality and inequality of the American West.

Inevitable...By Robert DeFrankReview of an advanced reader copy. This new installment in the sprawling multiworld dark fantasy epic of Lovecraftian fantasy is a treat for fans of the saga and an excellent entry point into the series for newcomers. Again we visit the world of On the Matter of the Red Hand, Slave of the Sky Captain and Regarding Oaths and the Whispering Flame, but from the perspective of those in a less civilized part of the world. In a wasteland of the Weird West where twisted monstrosities prey on the survivors of humanity, the husks of ancient steampunk technology awake to malevolent life, and what law and order exists comes from the barrel of a gun, Sierra and her teacher, Domingo, are gunslingers armed with enchanted weapons fit for the killing of monsters and on a quest to find the Last City of Man and with it the hopes to save a world that is sliding into twilight. To find the path to that city, they must first confront the Harridan: a near legendary monster that has struck horror into the hearts of children for centuries, and the reality of that immortal witch makes the legends pale by comparison. The quest takes our brave warriors into ancient ruins filled with a sleeping but malevolent power that the Harridan is intent on harnessing.
