Before television and photography, the great battles of history were documented with paint on can- vas. Los Angeles artist Sandow Birk has revived that tradition, depicting one of the most profound conflicts in California history: the rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles. NPRʼs Ina Jaffe reports that in Birkʼs version, the rivalry is imagined as a shooting war. INA JAFFE reporting: History painting was long regarded as “the depiction of the great deeds of great men worthy of mem- ory,” to quote one Renaissance critic. Sandow Birkʼs history paintings, on the other hand, show an unlikely bunch of accidental warriors willing to do or die in the battle between Fog Town and Smog Town struggling for total California domination, or at least bragging rights. Mr. SANDOW BIRK (Artist): History paintings were never really accurate in any way, that they were always tainted with a sort of a propagandistic desired to show one side or another or to put certain people in more heroic light. And so if there is a role for history painting today, itʼs spoofing the giant romantic battle paintings of the past. JAFFE: Thereʼs a jumble of past and present in Birkʼs California war paintings. Generals are seen sometimes on horseback and sometimes on Harleys, naval battles are waged by ships from every century and soldiers attack waving swords, rifles and banners saying, `Ask me about free checking.ʼ No California cliche goes unexploited.

He set off to meet the voters. But the aim in Waldie's walk was not quite that, as he strode up the concrete highways and country roads of California, through shopping centers, college cam- puses and farm clusters, into cities and suburbs, hand out to greet each person encountered, the pleasant grin - Tarm and personal, "My name is Waldie. I hope you'll vote for me for governor," with a little coterie of volunteers flocking behind to thrust a pamphlet at each passerby and gather nam'. This turned out to be the most extensive encounter between candidate and voter of the entire 1974 campaign. For the human satisfaction that came from meeting directly so many People Waldie later said it was worth the whole arduous, plodding, interminable ordeal. "I love this. The documents clearly endorse and encourage the recipient to vote for presidential candidate John Kerry, and are a political mailing that go beyond mere party-building efforts when they specifically endorsed the candidate by name. However, none of the expenditures on this mailing appear to have been discloses, as required by federal election law, by the sender, Ms. Jene Witte. My wife, Susan, decided she would call Ms. Witte (this evening of October 4,2004), believing that Ms. Witte was simply a good-intentioned Kerry supporter. Ms. Witte conceded that she did indeed mail out these letters to “several” addresses in Washington and proceeded to put on quite an act of innocence, acting as if she was, as her letter implied, a lowly, blue-collar grandma. Noting that the pages of the mailing appeared to have been folded by a professional folding machine and that the envelope was made with nicely printed stationary that totally contrasted with the unsigned and very unprofessionally wntten “note fiom the heart,” I decided to investigate.

SMALL-STRINGER, KARNA: Files, 1981-1984 Media Relations, White House Office of, 1981-1984 Public Affairs Directorate, NSC (see separate inventory) The Office of Media Relations handled all press contacts with the White House other than the actual White House press corps. It was created in the fall of 1981 from the Office of Media Liaison in the Press Office and the Television Office from the Office of Communication. The office had various names throughout the administration including: Office of Media Liaison; Office of Media Relations and Planning; Office of Media Relations and Broadcasting; Office of Media and Broadcasting Relations. The Office’s staff, physical location in the White House and general functions remained exactly the same during these various name changes. For ease of use and to reflect their organizational unity the Library is naming this office: Office of Media Relations. At the start of the Reagan Administration, Karna Small-Stringer was a Deputy Press Secretary under James Brady, the White House Press Secretary. After Brady was injured in the March 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan, Larry Speakes, another Deputy Press Secretary, was appointed Acting Press Secretary. In June 1981 Speakes was named Principal Deputy Press Secretary, officially taking over most of Brady’s duties.
