  • Faith in a Box: Entertainment Television and Religion September 25, 2003-September 24, 2004
PUBLIC POLICY ACTION PAPER Faith in a Box: Entertainment Television and Religion September 25, 2003-September 24, 2004 January 2005 National Religious Broadcasters 9510 Technology Drive Manassas, Virginia 20110 Executive Summary According to a 2003 Harris Poll, 90% of Americans express belief in God. Television is gradually catching up with this statistic by including religious subject matter in more of the programs that air on its medium (one treatment per hour in 2003/2004 versus one every 3.3 hours in 1997). But the quality of those portrayals is cause for concern. In this sixth Parents Television Council study looking at the treatment of religion on primetime television, an entire year of programming was analyzed. In 2,385.5 hours of programming 2,344 treatments of religion were found. The previous study, done in 1997, found 551 treatments of religion in its 1,800 hours studied. Overall, negative depictions of religion surpassed those that are positive by a slim margin. However, depictions of aspects affiliated with organized religion were found to be overwhelmingly negative. The question, then, is does television’s treatment of religion truly reflect the viewpoints of the majority of Americans. A Gallup analysis done in 2003 found that 60% of Americans consider religion very important to them, while another 24% say it is fairly important. The Gallup poll found that roughly two-thirds of adult Americans consider themselves a member of a specific church or synagogue. Significantly, they also found that most Americans attend some sort of religious service once a month, at least; and a third of Americans do so on a weekly basis.

Hits Under Armour With TM Suit By Aaron Vehling Law360, New York (March 06, 2015, 2:07 PM ET) -- Hydro Clothing, an apparel brand featured on several VH1 reality shows featuring former Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav, on Thursday sued Under Armour Inc. in a California federal court, alleging that Under Armour’s similarly named products infringe on Hydro’s trademarks. Hydro Clothing, a name under which Cohen International Inc., does business, says in its suit that Under Armour’s line of shirts, board shorts, pants, hoodies and other apparel under the name “Hydro” and “Hydro Armour” is deceptive and likely to confuse consumers. The complaint also names Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc., which sells Under Armour’s clothing line. “[Under Armour]’s unauthorized use of the Hydro mark is a trademark use which is likely to confuse the reasonably prudent consumer into believing that [Under Armour]’s infringing apparel products are produced by Cohen,” the complaint says. “On information and belief, Dick’s and [other] retailers are continuing to sell [Under Armour] products bearing the Hydro mark, despite being requested in writing by Cohen to cease their infringement of the Hydro mark.” Before filing the lawsuit, Hydro Clothing also sent Under Armour directly a cease-and- desist notice, but the apparel company continues to promote and sell products under the Hydro mark, the complaint says.

Gwen Stefani, Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple and Sarah McLachlan retreat and record here. Sting, Elton John, John Mayer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beck have played benefits on the grounds. But the home's story began in 1923 with oil heiress Daisy Canfield, who lived there with her silent-movie star husband, Antonio Moreno. A decade later, driving home from a party, Daisy veered off Mulholland Drive and plunged 300 feet to her death. The 14-bedroom mansion became a school for girls, then a nunnery. After years of neglect, it was severely damaged in a 1987 earthquake. "Here was this rotted, crumbling, beautiful, gorgeous girl waiting for someone to fall in love with her," says designer Dana Hollister, who bought the home in 1998 for $2.25 million and set about restoring its original beauty. Then reality super-producer Mark Burnett came calling. "The whole house has been busted out to be like a diamond for that man." She moved in with her boyfriend in Maine during the taping, but plans to return home — and keep the house rocking — after the show's run.

  • Rapper Flavor Flav Gets Bitter Taste of IRS Lien When You Read How Much Some Entertainers Make, You May Wonder Where All the Money Goes
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER Aug. 20 2012 — 11:12 pm Rapper Flavor Flav Gets Bitter Taste Of IRS Lien When you read how much some entertainers make, you may wonder where all the money goes. But many will tell you their host of managers, publicists, agents, lawyers, and others getting a cut trim down the entertainer’s take considerably. Even routine bills like taxes may not get handled, and once you get behind, it’s hard to catch up. Even big names like Martin Scorsese ($2.85 million) and Al Pacino ($188,000) have faced IRS liens. Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife Both their oops tax problems were tied to convicted celebrity accountant Kenneth Starr. Such problems are embarrassing but fixable. Scorsese, Pacino Whacked by IRS Tax Liens. Sometimes tax liens are even wrong, as Dionne Warwick famously proved. See Dionne Warwick Proves IRS Tax Liens Can Be Wrong. Most of the time, though, tax liens are steps in the IRS collection process and eventually lead to payment. Rapper Flavor Flav, born William Drayton, Jr. is no Dionne Warwick. A Notice of Federal Tax Lien filed by the IRS lets the public know he owes nearly $1 million for 2004 through 2006. It’s made up of $52, 243.47 for 2004, $303,035.93 for 2005 and $550,971.16 for 2006. See Flavor Flav: Does He Have a Tax Lien? Yeah, Boyyyy! These tax returns coincide with reality TV’s “The Surreal Life,” “Strange Love” and “Flavor of Love.” In 2009, California filed its own tax lien for over $183,000.
