Precautionary rabies vaccination started On August 15, the Sanibel Police Department was notified by Lee County Animal Services that a nine year old girl visiting Sanibel was bitten by . a raccoon. According to the girl's mother, the child is starting a series of rabies vaccinations from her home in Minnesota. At this time, there is no evidence that the Sanibel raccoon population is infected with rabies. According to the August 9, 2005 police report, the child was feeding the raccoon cat food at a shop on Tarpon Bay Road when she was bitten. During the investigation, the shop owners advised the police officer that a family of raccoons is living under the building and eating cat food left out by other shop owners for ferrel cats.
