It was a privilege to engage in conversations with you and give a voice to your lived experiences. iv ABSTRACT Despite decades of efforts on the part of the nation’s postsecondary institutions, racial equity remains a major hurdle facing higher education institutions in the United States (Hylton, 2012; Jackson, 2000, 2001). Although Black women have participated in U.S. higher education for more than a century and have certainly made great strides toward occupying their rightful place within academia, they continue to face a myriad of personal and professional challenges (Burke & Carter, 2015; Gregory, 2001). Some scholars have resolved that existing literature has shifted from sharing the narratives of underrepresented women in senior student affairs officer (SSAO) positions to reporting in gender neutral ways, which leaves their unique experiences undocumented (Clay, 2014; Yakaboski & Donahoo 2011). The purpose of this critical qualitative study was to explore the experiences of purposively selected Black women in SSAO positions. The following research question guided this study: What are the professional experiences of Black women who serve as senior student affairs officers at land-grant colleges and universities? Interviews were conducted with 10 Black women serving in SSAO roles at land-grant higher education institutions, and four themes described the lived experiences of the participants: (a) Wendt, Ed.D., Committee Chair Eric G. Lovik, Ph.D., Committee Member 3 ABSTRACT This study reviews if the glass cliff phenomenon is occurring in U.S. higher education presidential hires. This topic is essential to review as U.S. higher education institutions are primarily presided over by male presidents. Female presidents do exist, but more often at more risky institutions. One reason for the lack of equity may be the glass cliff phenomenon, which asserts that women are more likely to be hired into leadership roles at riskier institutions. This inequity in hiring practices places women in leadership positions at considerable career risk. This study is a nonexperimental study using an ex post facto, causal-comparative design using publicly available data. The methods review data on female presidents of private and for-profit U.S. institutions from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Purposive sampling matched female presidents with male presidents at similar institutions. Data from the financial responsibility composite score database from the U.S. Department of Education (2020) are used to look for patterns in financial responsibility composite scores (FRCS) before and after presidential hires.

We got to keep it as visible as our blood. (Jones 1975) The black women's critique of history has not only involved us in coming to terms with "absences"; we have also been outraged by the ways in which it has made us visible, when it has chosen to see us. History has constructed our sexuality and our femininity as deviating from those qualities with which white women, as the prize objects of the Western world, have been endowed. We have also been defined in less than human terms (Jordon 1969). Our continuing struggle with History began with its "discovery" of us. However, this chapter will be concerned with herstory rather than history. We wish to address questions to the feminist theories that have been developed during the last decade; a decade in which black women have been fighting, in the streets, in the schools, through the courts, inside and outside the wage relation. The significance of these struggles ought to inform the writing of the herstory of women in Britain. It is fundamental to the development of a feminist theory and practice that is meaningful for black women.

    TRACES OF HERSTORY: REINVENTING WOMANHOOD IN THE KATE FANSLER MYSTERY SERIES BY AMANDA CROSS Emma Domínguez-Rué Universitat de Lleida [email protected] Although the American writer and Columbia professor Carolyn Gold Heilbrun (1926-2003) is best known for her best-selling mystery novels, published under the pseudonym of Amanda Cross, she also authored remarkable pieces of non-fiction in which she asserted her long-standing commitment to feminism. Taking Heilbrun’s essays in feminism and literary criticism as a basis and her 1990 novel The Players Come Again as substantiation to my argument, this paper will illustrate the ways in which her detective novels became an instrument to reach a mass audience of female readers who might not have read her theoretical work, but who were perhaps finding it difficult to reach fulfillment as women under patriarchy. My aim is to reveal the extent to which Heilbrun’s seemingly more superficial and much more commercial novels were used a catalyst that informed her feminist principles while vindicating the need to repair women’s historical invisibility.     Symbolic management and the glass cliff. Evidence from the boardroom careers of female and male directors. May 2016 Abstract This paper uses archival board data to demonstrate that women who take positions as directors of UK companies have shorter tenures than their male counterparts. We show that female directors face a much higher risk of dismissal as they approach nine years of service on the board when their long service deprives them of the all-important classifi- cation as ‘independent’. At this point, their position on the board becomes precarious. Male directors do not suffer the same increase in boardroom exit. This gender-specific difference is shown to be clearly linked to the independence status. It is argued that these observations are consistent with the notion that female directors are being used in the symbolic management of corporate governance and that at nine years, when the cloak of independence disappears, women directors are then exposed to the biases that arise from role congruity issues. JEL codes: J31; J62; J63 1 Introduction The Sex Discrimination Act became law in the UK in 1975. It was intended to eliminate labour market discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status. In the year 2000, some 25 years after it came into force, only around 6% of board positions on FTSE 100 companies were held by women. By 2015 this had risen to 25%, but only after considerable government pressure 1. The situation in the FTSE250 and elsewhere is less encouraging. The analysis in this paper will show that the challenge facing women on UK boards is not only their under- representation but also their subsequent experience once they are appointed to a board.

    “HerStory” Challenging Gender Stereotypes in Israeli Girls’ Perfect Love Stories Shiri Reznik This study explores the love stories written by 77 Israeli girls, aged 11-12 years old, in order to examine the possible influence of the media on their romantic narratives and the gender roles embedded within them. The girls were asked to write their own perfect love story and then participated in focus groups during which they explained the stories they wrote. The stories have been analyzed with the method of discourse analysis. Although many girls chose to express their imaginary romantic world by using popular media characters, plot lines and idioms, others offered a new and even revolutionary perspective on what a perfect love story can be, and especially the gender roles it can depict. Stories about female protagonists who make the first romantic move, perform sisterhood as an act of resistance, or prefer to be an assertive non-stereotypical princess, are analyzed in light of the girls’ socioeconomic backgrounds and role models. If you had to imagine the perfect love story what would it be? This study aims to find out how tween Israeli girls perceive the concept of romantic love, what are their expectations regarding gender roles in the romantic sphere, and how do they imagine an ideal love story when given the opportunity to write their own romantic narrative. Another goal of the current study is to examine the possible influence of the media on girls’ romantic perceptions and dreams, since numerous studies have found that mediated representations of love are meaningful sources of identification, social learn- ing, and internalization of romantic narratives and behaviors among children, teens and adults as well (Bachen & Illouz, 1996; Hefner & Wilson, 2013).
